Download or read book Landscapes of the Western Front written by Ross Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the British soldiers on the Western Front and how they responded to the war landscape they encountered behind the lines and at the front. Using a multidisciplinary perspective, this study investigates the relationship between soldiers and the spaces and materials of the warzone, analyzing how soldiers constructed a ‘sense of place’ in the hostile, unpredictable environment. Drawing upon recent developments within First World War Studies and the anthropological examination of the fields of conflict, an ethnohistorical perspective of the soldiers is built which details the various ways soldiers responded to the physical and material world of the Western Front. This study is also grounded in the wider debates on how the First World War is remembered within Britain and offers an alternative perspective on the individuals who fought in the world’s first global conflagration nearly a century ago.

The small fry of petty larceny and minor disturbances in the backwaters of north-west London are his daily round. His philosophising Welsh drinking companion Mod, his outsized and unruly dog Kitty, his quarrels with his landlady Mrs Fulljames - none of these bodes well for the efficient solving of crimes and outwitting of villainy. But Davies is encouraged by his beautiful friend Jemma, and every so often he stumbles upon something really big. Gathered together for the first time in one volume, here are Leslie Thomas's three books about the most endearing comic hero he has ever created.

Download or read book 1939 1945 As I Remember written by Stephen Keoghane and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leslie Wheeler was born in Devizes, Wiltshire in 1909, and in 1927 he enlisted in his local Territorial Army regiment, the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry. Leslie served throughout the Second World War in the Middle East, North Africa, and Italy as a senior non-commissioned officer and was then commissioned as quartermaster into the regiment that he clearly loved. His honest and revealing memoirs depict the final years of horsed cavalry in the British Army, the wartime transition to mobile but poorly equipped desert columns, and finally the transition to a tank regiment. The often-overlooked 1941 campaigns in Syria, Iraq, and Persia as well as El Alamein and the fight north through Italy are described by the author in a typically understated fashion. What makes this tale unique is the often amusing and sometimes cynical perspective of a senior and experienced soldier working tirelessly in the quartermaster’s department to keep his regiment supplied in peace and war.
Download or read book Twelve Days of the Infanta Margarita written by Eric Winter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve days of the Infanta Margarita is a fiction but it is so well supported that it is hard to believe that it is not true. The evidence both amazes and delights, much of it is fact, some is legend, some fairy story, some children's games, but the most important are two portraits, "Las Meninas' and "The Rokeby Venus" by the Spanish painter Diego de Velasquez . The story begins in the princess's 15th year when she refuses to be a subject for another portrait in formal court dress and, to make a point, she insists she will be painted in the nude. The story then proceeds through the sequence of gifts that we know in the Carol "The Twelve days of Christmas" starting with the partridge and ending with the twelve lords a-leaping. The work is a performance-piece for a small vocal group. A narrator provides the continuing thread of the story which is supported by a number of musical arrangements most of which are based upon familiar Irish and Scottish airs. As few as three can perform the work and as many as twelve. It has been successfully presented in different venues from coffee shop to concert hall. The performance time is about ninety minutes.
Download or read book A Conscript in Korea written by Neville Williams and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of service in the Korean War, though bitter cold, monsoons, and ever-present danger from enemy forces—includes photos. This remarkable story begins when, as a young National Serviceman in 1951, the author walked through the gates at the Welch Brigade Training Centre, Brecon, and ends when he walked back into Civvy Street in 1953. Between these dates he went through many life-changing experiences, in particular the twelve months he spent with the 1st Battle Welch Regiment in Korea. In this memoir he tells his story of this almost forgotten war in graphic detail. Temperatures could drop to -45 with biting Siberian snow-laden winds. In the spring came the monsoons followed by a humid mosquito-laden period. The Welch Regiment at that time were part of the Commonwealth Division that, allied to the American and Korean ROK armies, was tasked with holding a line north of the 38th Parallel while politicians tried to broker a deal. The Chinese were well dug in, and were a resourceful determined enemy, never missing a chance to edge forward even if it meant serious casualties. Artillery exchanges were often fierce, and information and fighting patrols often clashed. As a lance corporal infantry signaler, the author was involved at all levels of operational and company activity and he gives the reader a real insight into the events and circumstances of war and the thoughts of a young man caught up in a desperate and dangerous conflict. The tenacity and spirit of young National Servicemen, and their Regular partners, shines through as they face life-threatening and exhausting situations and conditions.
Download or read book Bingo Capitalism written by Kate Bedford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casinos are often used by political economists, and popular commentators, to think critically about capitalism. Bingo - an equal chance numbers game played in many parts of the world - is overlooked in these conversations about gambling and political economy. Bingo Capitalism challenges that omission by asking what bingo in England and Wales can teach us about capitalism and the regulation of everyday gambling economies. The book draws on official records of parliamentary debate, case law, regulations and in-depth interviews with both bingo players and workers to offer the first socio-legal account of this globally significant and immensely popular pastime. It explores the legal and political history of bingo and how gender shapes, and is shaped by, diverse state rules on gambling. It also sheds light on the regulation of workers, players, products, places, and technologies. In so doing it adds a vital new dimension to accounts of UK gambling law and regulation. Through Bingo Capitalism, Bedford makes a key theoretical contribution to our understanding of the relationship between gambling and political economy, showing the role of the state in supporting and then eclipsing environments where gambling played a key role as mutual aid. In centring the regulatory entanglement between vernacular play forms, self-organised membership activity, and corporate leisure experiences, she offers a fresh vision of gambling law from the everyday perspective of bingo.

Download or read book Calling The Horses written by Peter O'Sullevan and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades Peter O'Sullevan was one of the iconic sports commentators, providing the sound track for half a century of horseracing as he called home such legends of the sport as Arkle, Nijinsky, Red Rum and Desert Orchid. His rapid-fire commentary seemed to echo the sound of horses' hooves, and it was not long before he became known as 'The Voice of Racing'. But in addition to his legendary status as a TV personality, Peter O'Sullevan was also a notable journalist and much-admired writer, and it is a measure of his standing both within and beyond the world of racing that his compulsively readable autobiography Calling the Horses, first published in 1989 and reprinted eight times, reached the top of the SUNDAY TIMES non-fiction bestseller list. The most recent edition of Calling the Horses was published in 1994, and the twenty years since then have brought many fresh episodes in the ongoing Peter O'Sullevan story, including the last racing days of his great friend Lester Piggott in 1995, his commentary on the 'Bomb Scare' Grand National of 1997, and his retirement from the BBC. He also describes setting up the Sir Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust, which has raised over £3.5 million for animal welfare charities, as well as offering his appreciation of a new generation of racing heroes, including jockey AP McCoy, who has come to dominate jump racing in a manner unparalleled in any sport, and the wonder-horse Frankel. The heartening news for the legions of Peter O'Sullevan fans is that, despite his years, his enthusiasm for racing is undiminished, and so are the elegance, fluency and wit which infuse his writing style. This new and extensively updated edition of Calling the Horses is a very remarkable book by a very remarkable man.
