Download or read book Enormous Changes at the Last Minute written by Grace Paley and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Enormous Changes at the Last Minute, originally published in 1974, Grace Paley "makes the novel as a form seem virtually redundant" (Angela Carter, London Review of Books). Her stories here capture "the itch of the city, love between parents and children" and "the cutting edge of combat" (Lis Harris, The New York Times Book Review). In this collection of seventeen stories, she creates a "solid and vital fictional world, cross-referenced and dense with life" (Walter Clemons, Newsweek).

Download or read book Culinary Landmarks written by Elizabeth Driver and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-04-05 with total page 1326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culinary Landmarks is a definitive history and bibliography of Canadian cookbooks from the beginning, when La cuisinière bourgeoise was published in Quebec City in 1825, to the mid-twentieth century. Over the course of more than ten years Elizabeth Driver researched every cookbook published within the borders of present-day Canada, whether a locally authored text or a Canadian edition of a foreign work. Every type of recipe collection is included, from trade publishers' bestsellers and advertising cookbooks, to home economics textbooks and fund-raisers from church women's groups. The entries for over 2,200 individual titles are arranged chronologically by their province or territory of publication, revealing cooking and dining customs in each part of the country over 125 years. Full bibliographical descriptions of first and subsequent editions are augmented by author biographies and corporate histories of the food producers and kitchen-equipment manufacturers, who often published the books. Driver's excellent general introduction sets out the evolution of the cookbook genre in Canada, while brief introductions for each province identify regional differences in developments and trends. Four indexes and a 'Chronology of Canadian Cookbook History' provide other points of access to the wealth of material in this impressive reference book.
Download or read book Faded and Threadbare Historic Textiles and their Role in Houses Open to the Public written by Margaret Ponsonby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historic houses that open to the public in England and Wales - particularly those owned by the National Trust - preserve their contents rather than restore them to a particular period. The former owners of these houses often retained objects from various periods and this layering of history produces interiors that look aged and patinated. Although the reason for this preservation and lack of fashionable renewable can be attributed to declining economic fortunes in the twentieth century, there are many examples of families practising this method of homemaking over a much longer period. Taking National Trust properties as its central focus, this book examines three interlocking themes to examine the role of historic textiles. Firstly it looks at houses with preserved contents together with the reasons for individual families choosing this lifestyle; secondly the role of the National Trust as both guardian and interpreter of these houses and their collections; and finally, and most importantly, the influence of textiles to contribute to the appearance of interiors, and their physical attributes that carry historical resonances of the past. The importance of preserved textiles in establishing the visual character of historic houses is a neglected area and therefore the prominence given to textiles in this project constitutes an original contribution to the study of these houses. Drawing upon a range of primary sources, including literature produced by the National Trust for their sites, and documentary sources for the families and their houses (such as diaries, letters and household accounts), the study takes a broad approach that will be of interest to all those with an interest in material culture, heritage, collecting studies and cultural history.

Download or read book On Collecting written by Susan Pearce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Collecting examines the nature of collecting both in Europe and among people living within the European tradition elsewhere. Susan Pearce looks at the way we collect and what this tells us about ourselves and our society. She also explores the psychology of collecting: why do we bestow value on certain objects and how does this add meaning to our lives? Do men and women collect differently? How do we use objects to construct our identity? This book breaks new ground in its analysis of our relationship to the material world.

Download or read book The Blue Beast written by Jonathan Walker and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ' The Blue Beast'—Edwardian slang for sexual passion—is the true account of the intimate lives of three extraordinary Edwardian women. Drawing on private family archives and highly revealing letters and diaries, the story examines how they became mistresses or confidantes of some of the most powerful men in Britain, men who profoundly affected the Empire's efforts in the First World War. The wealthy and voluptuous American adventuress, Emilie Grigsby, claimed she was the 'mascot of High Command' – and not without good reason. She courted the press baron Lord Northcliffe, the philandering Quartermaster-General, Sir John Cowans and The Times military correspondent, Colonel Charles Repington, all of whom fell under her spell. It was manipulation on an ambitious scale, although eventually her schemes unravelled. Meanwhile, the sensuous and statuesque Winifred 'Wendy' Bennett launched into a passionate affair with the Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal Sir John French. ' The 'Blue Beast' uncovers how they conducted their relationship, whilst French wrestled with crisis after crisis to keep command of a vast army on the Western Front. Finally, the strong-willed and aristocratic Hon. Sylvia Henley replaced her sister Venetia Stanley as the close confidante of Prime Minister Asquith. It brought her great influence; but it was no compensation for the personal heartache that followed. Taking the reader on a journey into London's High Society during the glittering Edwardian era and the tumult of the Great War, Jonathan Walker uncovers a story of power, passion and betrayal.

Download or read book Kennedy on Negotiation written by Gavin Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiation is a vital skill for every manager. As a result, there are almost as many 'patented' techniques for negotiation as there are managers, each proclaiming to be the definitive route to success. The authors behind these techniques keep their work very much to themselves. Their fundamentally different approaches to negotiation remain in isolation from each other, as if their authors were too polite to contradict others in the field. In most cases, when you are developing your negotiation skills, this leaves you with a stark choice: pick a single technique and ignore the rest. Until now ... Kennedy on Negotiation is an authoritative and comprehensive guide to negotiation skills training and practice. Dr Kennedy uses the well-established 'Four Phases' model as the structure around which he critiques constructively the numerous competing theories and models. Gavin Kennedy's book is everything you would expect from one of the most respected writers on negotiation. It is a readable and reliable guide to all that is best in the various contributions to negotiation training from authors such as John Nash, Walton and McKersie, Atkinson, Nierenberg, Rubin and Brown, Gottschalk, Karass, Fisher and Ury, and many more, including Gavin Kennedy himself.
