Book Cary Grant the Making of a Hollywood Legend

Download or read book Cary Grant the Making of a Hollywood Legend written by Mark Glancy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive new account of the professional and personal life of one of Hollywood's most unforgettable, influential stars. Archie Leach was a poorly educated, working-class boy from a troubled family living in the backstreets of Bristol. Cary Grant was Hollywood's most debonair film star--the embodiment of worldly sophistication. Cary Grant: The Making of a Hollywood Legend tells the incredible story of how a sad, neglected boy became the suave, glamorous star many know and idolize. The first biography to be based on Grant's own personal papers, this book takes us on a fascinating journey from the actor's difficult childhood through years of struggle in music halls and vaudeville, a hit-and-miss career in Broadway musicals, and three decades of film stardom during Hollywood's golden age. Leaving no stone unturned, Cary Grant delves into all aspects of Grant's life, from the bitter realities of his impoverished childhood to his trailblazing role in Hollywood as a film star who defied the studio system and took control of his own career. Highlighting Grant's genius as an actor and a filmmaker, author Mark Glancy examines the crucial contributions Grant made to such classic films as Bringing Up Baby (1938), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Notorious (1946), An Affair to Remember (1957), North by Northwest (1959), Charade (1963) and Father Goose (1964). Glancy also explores Grant's private life with new candor and insight throughout the book's nine sections, illuminating how Grant's search for happiness and fulfillment lead him to having his first child at the age of 62 and embarking on his fifth marriage at the age of 77. With this biography--complete with a chronological filmography of the actor's work--Glancy provides a definitive account of the professional and personal life of one of Hollywood's most unforgettable, influential stars.

Download or read book Tree Cultures written by Paul Cloke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between nature and culture has become a popular focus in social science, but there have been few grounded accounts of trees. Providing shelter, fuel, food and tools, trees have played a vital role in human life from the earliest times, but their role in symbolic expression has been largely overlooked. For example, trees are often used to express nationalistic feelings. Germans drew heavily on tree and forest imagery in nation-building, and the idea of 'hearts of oak' has been central to concepts of English identity. Classic scenes of ghoulish trees coming to life and forests closing in on unsuspecting passers-by commonly feature in the media. In other instances, trees are used to represent paradisical landscapes and symbolize the ideologies of conservation and concern for nature. Offering new theoretical ideas, this book looks at trees as agents that co-constitute places and cultures in relationship with human agency. What happens when trees connect with human labour, technology, retail and consumption systems? What are the ethical dimensions of these connections? The authors discuss how trees can affect and even define notions of place, and the ways that particular places are recognized culturally. Working trees, companion trees, wild trees and collected or conserved trees are considered in relation to the dynamic politics of conservation and development that affect the values given to trees in the contemporary world. Building on the growing field of landscape study, this book offers rich insights into the symbolic and practical roles of trees. It will be vital reading for anyone interested in the anthropology of landscape, forestry, conservation and development, and for those concerned with the social science of nature.

Book Urban Transport without the hot air

Download or read book Urban Transport without the hot air written by Steve Melia and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK population will reach 70 million by 2027. How will all these people get around? Is building more, wider roads really the solution? If you've ever studied, worked in or used transport, there's a good chance you'll have stopped one day and asked yourself 'why?'. With population numbers rising and more than three-quarters of the British population living in urban areas, cities are becoming congested – and the air increasingly stinky! In Volume 1 of Urban Transport without the hot air, transport and planning specialist Steve Melia dispels long-standing myths surrounding transportation issues in the United Kingdom. From car ownership, public transport and cycling to airports and the belief that we're building too many flats, he discusses the challenges and values of urban planning. This is also a practical book filled with sustainable solutions to improve the future of our transport system. By drawing on the experience of London, Bristol, Cambridge and other European towns, Steve argues that we can create cleaner and more pleasant places to live, and a more sustainable economy. It also includes evidence from both Steve's research, and studies carried out by respected academics and experts, providing reliable and informative insights on urban living. Persuasive and accessibly written, and is a must-read for anyone interested or involved in transport and urban planning.
