Book The Spanish Craze

  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2019-03-01
  • ISBN : 1496207726
  • Pages : 640 pages

Download or read book The Spanish Craze written by Richard L. Kagan and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Craze is the compelling story of the centuries-long U.S. fascination with the history, literature, art, culture, and architecture of Spain. Richard L. Kagan offers a stunningly revisionist understanding of the origins of hispanidad in America, tracing its origins from the early republic to the New Deal. As Spanish power and influence waned in the Atlantic World by the eighteenth century, her rivals created the “Black Legend,” which promoted an image of Spain as a dead and lost civilization rife with innate cruelty and cultural and religious backwardness. The Black Legend and its ambivalences influenced Americans throughout the nineteenth century, reaching a high pitch in the Spanish-American War of 1898. However, the Black Legend retreated soon thereafter, and Spanish culture and heritage became attractive to Americans for its perceived authenticity and antimodernism. Although the Spanish craze infected regions where the Spanish New World presence was most felt—California, the American Southwest, Texas, and Florida—there were also early, quite serious flare-ups of the craze in Chicago, New York, and New England. Kagan revisits early interest in Hispanism among elites such as the Boston book dealer Obadiah Rich, a specialist in the early history of the Americas, and the writers Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He also considers later enthusiasts such as Angeleno Charles Lummis and the many writers, artists, and architects of the modern Spanish Colonial Revival in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Spain’s political and cultural elites understood that the promotion of Spanish culture in the United States and the Western Hemisphere in general would help overcome imperial defeats while uniting Spaniards and those of Spanish descent into a singular raza whose shared characteristics and interests transcended national boundaries. With elegant prose and verve, The Spanish Craze spans centuries and provides a captivating glimpse into distinct facets of Hispanism in monuments, buildings, and private homes; the visual, performing, and cinematic arts; and the literature, travel journals, and letters of its enthusiasts in the United States.

Book Black Ships and Sea Raiders

Download or read book Black Ships and Sea Raiders written by Jeffrey P. Emanuel and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean was a time of social, political, and economic upheaval – conditions reflected, in many ways, in the world of Homer’s Odyssey. Jeffrey P. Emanuel examines the Odyssey’s Second Cretan Lie (xiv 191 – 359) in the context of this watershed transition, with particular emphasis on raiding, warfare, maritime technology and tactics, and the evidence for the so-called ‘Sea Peoples’ who have been connected to the events of this period. He focuses in particular on the hero’s description of his frequent raiding activities and on his subsequent sojourn in the land of the pharaohs, and connections between Odysseus’ false narrative and the historical experiences of one particular Sea Peoples group: the ‘Sherden of the Sea.’

  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Palm Beach written by Polly Anne Earl and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1894, Palm Beach leaped to world prominence as a winter playground with the completion of Henry Morrison Flagler's Royal Poinciana Hotel. In 1920's Palm Beach's extravagant lifestyle reached its height, and grand sprawling Mediterranean-style mansions abounded. By the 1980s, financial prosperity and an economic boom, which was accompanied by an onslaught of redevelopment, threatened Palm Beach's world famous architectural heritage. Palm Beach details the meticulous restorations of more than twenty great houses and public buildings on the "American Riviera." These houses were restored from 1988 to the present, and each house has won the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach's coveted Ballinger Award. The cycle of building and restoration chronicled here encompasses one of America's enduring architectural landscapes, as well as the dynamics of its social history. Public and private structures designed by some of the style-setting early architects are depicted, including works of Addison Mizner, Joseph Urban, and Maurice Fatio, as well as those of anonymous designers, whose feats of imagination rivaled the most celebrated professionals. The photography has been taken to respectfully document the superb restorations of these houses, many of which have never before been published.

Book The Jesuit Order As a Synagogue of Jews

Download or read book The Jesuit Order As a Synagogue of Jews written by Robert A. Maryks and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Jesuit Order as a Synagogue of Jews" the author explains how Christians with Jewish family backgrounds went within less than forty years from having a leading role in the foundation of the Society of Jesus to being prohibited from membership in it. The author works at the intersection to two important historical topics, each of which attracts considerable scholarly attention but that have never received sustained and careful attention together, namely, the early modern histories of the Jesuit order and of Iberian purity of blood concerns. An analysis of the pro- and anti-converso texts in this book (both in terms of what they are claiming and what their limits are) advance our understanding of early modern, institutional Catholicism at the intersection of early modern religious reform and the new racism developing in Spain and spreading outwards.
