Book Anger Hostility and the Heart

Download or read book Anger Hostility and the Heart written by Aron Wolfe Siegman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the roles played by hostility and anger in the etiology and course of coronary heart disease (CHD) has mushroomed. Moreover, there has been considerable progress in the knowledge of neurohormonal correlates of anger and hostility that could conceivably play a role in the pathogenesis of CHD. The editors of this volume believe that this is the appropriate time in the history of coronary-prone behavior research to take stock -- to identify the basic questions that need further elucidation, and to provide future direction. Although there is a surprising consensus among the contributors about the nature of the critical issues, they each offer a somewhat different perspective. This book will provide a variety of perspectives on what is known and what still needs to be known -- a useful source for promising research hypotheses.

Book Hostility and Aggression

Download or read book Hostility and Aggression written by D. Zillmann and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1979-08-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian Formalism and Marxist criticism had a seismic impact on twentieth-cetury literary theory and the shockwaves are still felt today. First published in 1979, Tony Bennett's Formalism and Marxism created its own reverberations by offering a ground-breaking new interpretation of the Formalists' achievements and demanding a new way forward in Marxist criticism. The author first introduces and reviews the work of the Russian Formalists, a group of theorists who made an extraordinarily vital contribution to literary criticism in the decade followig the October Revolution of 1917. Placing the work of key figures in context and addressing such issues as aesthetics, linguistics and the category of literature, literary form and function and literary evolution, Bennett argues that the Formalists' concerns provided the basis for a radically historical approach to the study of literature. Bennett then turns to the situation of Marxist criticism ad sketches the risks it has run in becoming overly entangled with the concerns of traditional aesthetics. He forcefully argues that through a serious and sympathetic reassessment of the Formalists and their historical approach, Marxist critics might find their way back on to the terrain of politics, where they and theri work belong. Addressing such crucial questions as 'What is literature?' or 'How should it be studied and to what end?', Formalism and Marxism explores ideas which should be considered by any student or reader of literature and provides a particular challenge to those interested in Marxist criticism. Now with a new afterword, this classic text still offers the best available starting point for those new to the field, as well as representing a crucial intervention in twentieth-century literary theory.

Book Attraction and Hostility

Download or read book Attraction and Hostility written by Anton Pelinka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attraction and hostility find expression in almost every variety of human relationship, and have consequently provided a central theme for social psychology since its beginnings. Yet attempts to conceptualize the diverse phenomena embraced in these terms have produced theories of such wide generality that they have little explanatory or predictive force. The object of the present study is to bring precision to a vast and sprawling area by setting limits and dimensions to the phenomena and investigating them experimentally on the basis of a series of hypotheses derived from a critical analysis of current conceptual approaches, including frustration, need-satisfaction, and dissonance models. The programme of experimental studies focuses on cognitive validation-a motivation to form and maintain subjectively valid evaluations of the self and the social environment-which is shown to be a common denominator of a number of attraction and hostility measures. The results throw light on reactions to boastfulness and to self-debasement; impressions of persons who are described by biased informants; effects of self-evaluation on competitiveness, and the projection of unfavourable characteristics. The interest of the study for social psychologists derives both from its theoretical integration of a wide range of behaviour and from its contribution to experimental design.

Download or read book Anger Disorders written by Howard Kassinove and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anger is a daily experience. It is encountered in a number of interpersonal, family and occupational situations. Research indicates that even "normal" parents worry that they will lose control of their anger and harm their children. When short-lived and of low intensity, anger may be of some help to us; in contrast, when it is persistent and intense, it is typically highly disruptive.; This text reviews facts and theories of anger. Anger is differentiated from annoyance, fury, rage, hostility and the behaviours of aggression and violence, and attention is paid to understanding anger both as a normal experience and as a clinical disorder. Specific anger diagnoses are presented to describe disruptive anger states and traits. Anger in criminal populations is also discussed and behaviour-analytic, cognitive-constructivist and cross-cultural perspectives are presented in detail.; The book argues that it is important to understand the causes, correlations and outcomes of anger and to develop effective remediation programmes when anger is excessive and disruptive. Thus, following a meta-analyses of the effectiveness of published treatments, two chapters present "ideal" therapy programmes for adult and childhood adolescent anger disorders. Finally, a model is presented to help understand anger development and resolution.
