Book excerpt: Excerpt from Host Relations of the Parasitic Cowbirds Inasmuch as the completeness of our knowledge varies with the different species of cowbirds, the detailed discussion of such biolog ical matters as host selection, the relative frequency with which different species of these hosts are utilized, the success rate with which these birds serve as fosterers, and the various reactions they give to the parasite and to the incidence of parasitism are all given in the account of each species of cowbird. As might be expected from the interest discussed above, the data are incomparably more extensive, and thus more amenable to analysis and interpretation, for the North American brown-headed cowbird than for any of the others. Because of this, the chief biological discussion and synthesis are given under that species, even though parts of the thoughts and conclusions are applicable to the others as well. The present study of the host-parasite relations of the cowbirds has been a long time in progress. Not only has a great mass of data been accumulating slowly over several decades, but newer insights and better methods of evaluating and interpreting the facts have been brought to bear as the material permitted. Much of the present data is due in large measure to the kind cooperation of many observ ers, collectors, and custodians of collections, all of whom have generously sent me numerous interesting records that otherwise would not have been available. Many birds now hatch in managed nesting cover or in artificial nesting structures, use man-made wetlands, and winter on crowded refuges while consuming a grain diet The water they use is often limited in supply and may contain residues from its many prior users. Unfortunately, intensified management often results in new problems, among which disease is important There are many similarities between the current form of management used for some waterfowl and that used in domestic animals. In both, the objective is to maintain a healthy, productive population. Dealing with health problems in waterfowl will benefit from combining the skills of veterinary medicine and wildlife ecology. Revisiting this book after 15 years allowed me to consider changes at the interface between the two disciplines. Veterinary medicine traditionally has been concerned with the individual and with treating sick animals, while the ecologist is concerned with populations and the manager has limited interest in treating sick birds. During this period there has been a marked increase in awareness among veterinarians that they have a responsibility in wildlife and conservation biology. Curricula of many veterinary colleges now include material on non-domestic animals and attempt to put disease in an ecological context. Also during this time, waterfowl managers have become more aware of disease as a factor in population biology and there are early attempts to put numbers to "disease" in models of continental waterfowl populations.

Surprisingly, severe zoonoses and sapronoses still appear that are either entirely new (e.g., SARS), newly recognized (Lyme borreliosis), resurging (West Nile fever in Europe), increasing in incidence (campylobacterosis), spatially expanding (West Nile fever in the Americas), with a changing range of hosts and/or vectors, with changing clinical manifestations or acquiring antibiotic resistance. The collective term for those diseases is (re)emerging infections, and most of them represent zoonoses and sapronoses (the rest are anthroponoses). The number of known zoonotic and sapronotic pathogens of humans is continually growing − over 800 today. In the introductory part, short characteristics are given of infectious and epidemic process, including the role of environmental factors, possibilities of their epidemiological surveillance, and control. Much emphasis is laid on ecological aspects of these diseases (haematophagous vectors and their life history; vertebrate hosts of zoonoses; habitats of the agents and their geographic distribution; natural focality of diseases). Particular zoonoses and sapronoses are then characterized in the following brief paragraphs: source of human infection; animal disease; transmission mode; human disease; epidemiology; diagnostics; therapy; geographic distribution.
