Book excerpt: Periodontitis is a disease that affects more than half the adult population in the world. Treatment is often based on ancient recommendations consisting in mechanically removing material from damaged zones. However, novel therapeutic management strategies exist, from prevention to efficient treatment, and regeneration. The need of integrative approaches to circumvent this worldwide pledge can be achieved through: A better understanding of this complex disease by promoting scientific research and a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach, including epidemiology, microbiology, immunology, physiology, therapeutics, psychology, etc. A better outreach by promoting vulgarization and recommendations for health professionals. A better information of the empowered patients, leading them to consider prevention and to take part in their therapeutic course. The book “Periodontitis: Advances in Experimental Research” includes a timely collection of chapters covering all the fields of research about periodontitis, consisting in concise reviews by the best specialists themselves and with clinical perspectives for periodontitis. Recent technological advances have allowed to explore shadowed areas of periodontology. The book “Periodontitis: Advances in Experimental Research” is a unique occasion to set a milestone for a more integrated field of periodontitis, with a broad scientific, medical, and public audience thanks to dedicated sections in each chapter: Abstract and main body (scientific audience and expert clinicians) Highlights (scientific audience and clinicians) Impact for Practice (clinicians and economical/political decision makers) Summary for Patients (patients and economical/political decision makers)

Book Bacteria and Host Interactions in Periodontal Health and Disease

Download or read book Bacteria and Host Interactions in Periodontal Health and Disease written by Prasad Dhadse and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research has been more productive for the mechanism of periodontal tissue destruction. However the transitions from periodontal health to disease has been more elusively intricate and complex of various interactions between resident bacteria and the host. A deeper insight of how the individual putative periodontal pathogens initiate and perpetuate the host response to cause periodontal tissue destruction is more interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the etiopathology of periodontal disease has changed greatly over the last decade. The huge diversity of species within the microbial biofilm and the enormous multi-layered complexity of the innate, inflammatory and adaptive immune responses generated in response to it warrant study and discussion. Comprising reviews from renowned experts in the field, this book presents a comprehensible overview of this exciting and pertinent subject matter. It provides new insights into the structure and composition of subgingival biofilms and the nature of the extracellular matrix. Further, a summary of current understanding of subgingival microbial diversity and an overview of experimental models used to dissect the functional characteristics of subgingival communities are presented. Other articles discuss the innate cellular and neutrophil responses to the periodontal biofilm. The role of antimicrobial peptides in the host response to biofilm bacteria and modern approaches to nonsurgical biofilm management are also discussed. Finally, this volume addresses advances in antibiotic use and proposes a paradigm shift in the pharmacological approach to periodontal disease management.

Book Host Modulation in Periodontology

Download or read book Host Modulation in Periodontology written by Anuj Singh Parihar and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long time, periodontitis was believed to be an inevitable consequence of aging and uniformly distributed in population. This age old belief was again supported by another belief that disease severity was directly proportional to plaque levels. But in the mid 1990’s early insight about complex diseases like periodontitis, led to new conceptual models of pathogenesis. In recent years, the role of microorganisms as the principle etiologic factor in periodontal diseases has gained new perspectives. Periodontal disease is a multifactorial and complex disease which is characterized by an upregulated or maladapted immune inflammatory response to bacterial plaque which predisposes to periodontal breakdown. Although periodontal disease is initiated by bacteria colonizing the tooth surface and gingival sulcus, the host response is believed to play an important role in the breakdown of connective tissue and bone. Thus, it can be summarized that periodontopathogens are necessary to cause periodontal disease but they are not sufficient to cause the disease. In response to infectious or inflammatory disease, two distinct yet intricately linked immune responses occur – innate & adaptive. The immune system is essential and the body has to marshal the innate and adaptive responses in order to stave off infection. However, in inflammatory disease the response becomes chronic and tissues do not return to homeostasis. The development of an immune inflammatory response during periodontitis in susceptible individuals results in the local production of a variety of inflammatory mediators. The development of an immune inflammatory response during periodontitis in susceptible individuals results in the local production of a variety of inflammatory mediators. Pro-inflammatory cytokines molecules and the cytokine network play an essential role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Therefore, the aim of this review is to provide comprehensive information and an update on various therapeutic methods to modify the host response as an adjunctive treatment for periodontitis.
