Book excerpt: The migration of highly skilled individuals brings together two important and well-developed institutional systems: on the one hand, the organization of professions and, on the other hand, the state and its migration and integration regime. Therefore, professional migrants move between two levels of regulation. The first one applies to their specific professional group and regulates the acquisition of knowledge as well as the participation in the labor market. The second one controls the access to and settlement in a given country. Taking the examples of medicine and the information technologies (IT) in Germany and Chile, the present research asks how different institutional settings shape the cultural capital negotiation strategies of highly skilled Latin American migrants. Using Bourdieu’s relational theory and especially his concepts of field and capital, this book seeks to understand professions as fields and to follow the trajectories of highly skilled Latin American migrants within two transnational professional fields. Using a reconstructive praxeological approach, this book presents three typologies, showing how the interaction between (transnational) professional fields and national regulations creates different possibilities for highly skilled migrants to negotiate their capital and the strategies they develop to reach a good position in their host country’s labor market.

These patterns are shaped by the interplay of legal norms, economic drivers and societal factors. The various dimensions of this Migration-Mobility Nexus are investigated by means of newly collected survey data: the Migration-Mobility Survey. The book covers different aspects of life in the host country, including the family dimension, the labour market and political participation as well as social integration. The book also takes into account the chronological dimension of migration by considering the migrants' arrival, their stay, and their expectations regarding return. Through applying conclusions drawn from the Swiss context to the migration literature on other European and high-income countries, this book contributes to new knowledge on current migration processes in high-income countries. As such it will be a valuable reference work to scholars and students in migration, social scientists and policy makers. Book excerpt: An international discussion on adequate education and new forms of learning was embedded in post-1989 socio-political scenario, which increasingly pronounced a knowledge-based economy. The idea of a time-framed instruction restricted to initial life stages was outdated in a dynamic society, that had changed continuously due to socio-political, economic and technological transformations. The European Union reacted accordingly and suggested to make learning a lifelong and lifewide process promoting geographical mobility for educational and professional motivations in order to stimulate economic growth and personal advancement on the social ladder. However, recent data shows that successful educational and professional integration and thus an adequate match of competences and occupational profiles is still unsatisfactory in numerous European contexts, especially when speaking of qualified mobility. This volume tackles the issue of professional inclusion of knowledgeable migrants under consideration of the paradigmatic life course framework and aims to contribute to international research on human capital valorisation. It thus strives to investigate professional trajectories and corresponding skill utilisation of mobile workers in a highly heterogenous European labour market that constantly requires actions to combat unemployment, the waste of skills, the invisibility of (hidden) educational capital and the lack of needed qualifications of its potential workforce.

Book excerpt: Atrocities by terrorists acting in the name of the ‘Islamic State’ are occurring with increasing regularity across Western Europe. Often the perpetrators are ‘home grown’, which places the relationship between Muslims and the countries in which they live under intense political and media scrutiny, and raises questions about the success of the integration of Muslims of migrant origin. At the same time, populist politicians try to shift the blame from the few perpetrators to the supposed characteristics of all Muslims as a ‘group’ by depicting Islam as a threat that seeks to undermine liberal democratic values and institutions. The research in this volume attempts to redress the balance by focusing on the views and life experiences of the many ‘ordinary’ Muslims in their European societies of settlement, and the role that cultural and religious factors play in shaping their social relationships with majority populations and public institutions. The book is specifically interested in the relationship between cultural/religious distance and social factors that shape the life chances of Muslims relative to the majority. The study is cross-national, comparative across the six main receiving countries with distinct approaches to the accommodation of Muslims: France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. The research is based on the findings of a survey of four groups of Muslims from distinct countries of origin: Turkey, Morocco, the former Yugoslavia, and Pakistan, as well as majority populations, in each of the receiving countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

This volume provides a comprehensive portrait of lone parenthood at the beginning of the XXI century from a life course perspective. The contributions included in this volume examine the dynamics of lone parenthood in the life course and explore the trajectories of lone parents in terms of income, poverty, labour, market behaviour, wellbeing, and health. Throughout, comparative analyses of data from countries as France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, and Australia help portray how lone parenthood varies between regions, cultures, generations, and institutional settings. The findings show that one-parent households are inhabited by a rather heterogeneous world of mothers and fathers facing different challenges. Readers will not only discover the demographics and diversity of lone parents, but also the variety of social representations and discourses about the changing phenomenon of lone parenthood. The book provides a mixture of qualitative and quantitative studies on lone parenthood. Using large scale and longitudinal panel and register data, the reader will gain insight in complex processes across time. More qualitative case studies on the other hand discuss the definition of lone parenthood, the public debate around it, and the social and subjective representations of lone parents themselves. Hong Kong’s recent expansion of higher education has given rise to budding academic and career aspirations amongst South Asian ethnic minority youths hoping to achieve upward social and economic mobility. Yet, existing bodies of scholarly work have yet to conceptualise the key determinants that drive an adaptive transition for these youths. This book challenges the widely held assumption that an undergraduate degree is a panacea to job acquisition and security as transitions are actively shaped by larger social, cultural, and economic trajectories potentially influencing the capabilities of ethnic minority youths. In light of their lived experiences, this book foregrounds the voices of ethnic minority youths to gauge an understanding of their higher education-to-work transitions by placing the job-preparatory and job-seeking stages as the basis of the inquiry. Suggesting implications for institutional and public policymaking for the inclusion and empowerment of EM youths, this book will appeal to scholars interested in minority studies and graduate employment, EM youths, university administrators and counsellors, NGOs working with EM communities as well as policy makers.

Hanna Brenzel zeigt, dass Unterschiede in der beruflichen Mobilität die Lohnentwicklung von Migrantinnen/Migranten und Einheimischen beeinflussen, was wiederum zu Lohnunterschieden beiträgt. Zudem werden die Einkommensunterschiede zwischen Migranten und Einheimischen durch unterschiedliche Persönlichkeitsmerkmale beeinflusst. Schließlich verdeutlicht ihre Arbeit, dass Unterschiede in den Arbeitsmarktintegrationsprozessen zwischen Migrantinnen und Migranten, die als Single migrieren und jene, die im Familienkontext migrieren, bestehen. Aufbauend auf diesen drei Haupterkenntnissen fördert Brenzel nicht nur das Verständnis von Lohnunterschieden, sondern erweitert auch das bestehende Wissen um die Integration in den Arbeitsmarkt von oft vernachlässigten Gruppen, indem sie diese in den Vordergrund rückt.

Yet, while it has successfully been applied to almost all fields of social inquiry it is much less used in research studying migrant populations and their integration patterns. This is puzzling since understanding immigrants’ integration requires just the kind of dynamic research approach this approach puts forward: any integration theory actually refers to life course processes. This volume shows fruitful cross-linkages between the two research traditions. A range of studies are presented that all apply sociological life course concepts to research on migrants and migrant groups in Europe. The book is organized thematically, indicating different important domains in the life course. Using a wide variety of methodological approaches, it covers both quantitative studies based on population census data and survey material as well as qualitative studies based on interviews. Attention is paid to the life courses of those who migrated themselves as well as their offspring. The studies cover different European countries, relating to one national context or a particular local setting in a city as well as cross-country comparisons. Overall the book shows that applying the sociological life course approach to migration and integration research may advance our understanding of immigrant settlement patterns as well as further develop the life course perspective
