Book Hospitality as Holiness

Download or read book Hospitality as Holiness written by Luke Bretherton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live amid increasing ethical plurality and fragmentation while at the same time more and more questions of moral gravity confront us. Some of these questions are new, such as those around human cloning and genetics. Other questions that were previously settled have re-emerged, such as those around the place of religion in politics. Responses to such questions are diverse, numerous and often vehemently contested. Hospitality as Holiness seeks to address the underlying question facing the church within contemporary moral debates: how should Christians relate to their neighbours when ethical disputes arise? The problems the book examines centre on what the nature and basis of Christian moral thought and action is, and in the contemporary context, whether moral disputes may be resolved with those who do not share the same framework as Christians. Bretherton establishes a model - that of hospitality - for how Christians and non-Christians can relate to each other amid moral diversity. This book will appeal to those interested in the broad question of the relationship between reason, tradition, natural law and revelation in theology, and more specifically to those engaged with questions about plurality, tolerance and ethical conflict in Christian ethics and medical ethics.

Book Unclean

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Beck
  • Publisher : Lutterworth Press
  • Release : 2012-05-31
  • ISBN : 071884047X
  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book Unclean written by Richard Beck and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I desire mercy, not sacrifice. Echoing Hosea, Jesus defends his embrace of the unclean in the Gospel of Matthew, seeming to privilege the prophetic call to justice over the Levitical pursuit of purity. And yet, as missional faith communities arewell aware, the tensions and conflicts between holiness and mercy are not so easily resolved. In an unprecedented fusion of psychological science and theological scholarship, Richard Beck describes the pernicious (and largely unnoticed) effects of the psychology of purity upon the life and mission of the church.

Book The Gospel Comes with a House Key

Download or read book The Gospel Comes with a House Key written by Rosaria Butterfield and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did God use to draw a radical, committed unbeliever to himself? Did God take her to an evangelistic rally? Or, since she had her doctorate in literature, did he use something in print? No, God used an invitation to dinner in a modest home, from a humble couple who lived out the gospel daily, simply, and authentically. With this story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same "radical, ordinary hospitality" to bring the gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own, but as God's tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives—helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Book Saved by Faith and Hospitality

Download or read book Saved by Faith and Hospitality written by Joshua W. Jipp and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too few Christians today, says Joshua Jipp, understand hospitality to strangers and the marginalized as an essential part of the church's identity. In this book Jipp argues that God's relationship to his people is fundamentally an act of hospitality to strangers, and that divine and human hospitality together are thus at the very heart of Christian faith. Jipp first provides a thorough interpretation of the major biblical texts related to the practice of hospitality to strangers, considering especially how these texts portray Christ as the divine host who extends God's welcome to all people. Jipp then invites readers to consider how God's hospitality sets the pattern for human hospitality, offering suggestions on how the practice of welcoming strangers can guide the church in its engagement with current social challenges—immigration, incarceration, racism, and more.

Book Understanding The Doctrines of Strategic Holiness Volume 1 The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Holiness

Download or read book Understanding The Doctrines of Strategic Holiness Volume 1 The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Holiness written by Nkemzi Theodore A and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Bible clearly teaches that God Almighty is "Righteous in all His ways and Holy in all His works" (Psalms 145:17). The Word of God makes it abundantly clear that "as he (God Almighty) which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy" (1 Peter 1:15(a)) "because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16). The Holy Bible is crystal clear (in Second Thessalonians 4:7) that every born again believer has been called unto "Holiness without which no man shall see The Lord" (Hebrews 12:14(b)). You (as a born again believer) have been called to serve The Lord in Righteousness and Holiness all the days of your life here on earth (Luke 1:74-75). Therefore, it's incumbent upon you to understand that when you are saved or born again (John 3:3-6), you are then to walk on "the way of Holiness" to Heaven (Isaiah 35:8) which, indeed, is the narrow way to Heaven: "13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:13-14). As you study this book, may you be among the few Righteous in these last days (Revelation 3:4) who are walking on the narrow way of Holiness to Heaven in The Mighty Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. This is Holiness Unto The Lord Study Text. It's Volume One in the Series. Understanding the Doctrines of Strategic Holiness. It's entitled: The Doctrines of Strategic Components of Holiness. In this Volume: Misconceptions concerning Holiness are explained, The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Holiness is examined, Satan's Deadly Strategic Doctrines (against Holiness) are briefly examined, The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Inner Holiness is stated, 20 Strategic Components of Inner Holiness are examined, The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Outer Holiness is stated, 40 Strategic Components of Outer Holiness are examined, and 60 Holiness Tests are stated. The Goal of this book is to prepare you for Heaven (Hebrews 12:14(b)). In this respect, our prayer is that after having studied it you shall repent and forsake unrighteousness and un-holiness and shall begin to serve Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ wholeheartedly in Righteousness and "Holiness without which no man shall see The Lord" (Hebrews 12:14(b)).

Book No Strangers Here

Download or read book No Strangers Here written by Judy Chin Chan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Churches are traditionally among the first to respond to the call to aid strangers in distress. In this age of globalization, one group of strangers in particular—asylum seekers and refugees—is in urgent need of welcome as they flee their homelands in search of safety. This same group, however, faces hostility and rejection in many places. What should be the church’s response? This book argues that Christian hospitality offers a powerful theological and pastoral response to such vulnerable strangers in our midst. For that to happen, the church must answer two questions: “What is Christian hospitality?” and “How do we put it into practice with refugees and asylum seekers?” Part One answers the first question with a cross-disciplinary study of sacred hospitality in both ancient and modern times. Part Two tackles the second with a fascinating case study of the church’s outreach to refugees and asylum seekers in an international Chinese city. As communities worldwide receive refugees and asylum seekers, this book offers Christian hospitality and the Hong Kong experience as one hopeful response to needy strangers at our doorstep. It is a welcome theological and practical resource for refugee ministry in the twenty-first century.

Book Communal Holiness in the Gospel of John

Download or read book Communal Holiness in the Gospel of John written by Musa Victor Mdabuleni Kunene and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author contends that communal holiness is the central theme of the vine metaphor in John 15:1-17. Illumination of the Johannine vine metaphor is illustrated by drawing on background information on the vine and its metaphorical usage in the Ancient Near East, Old Testament, and Second Temple Period and to suggest understanding in light of the communal holiness of the covenant people of God. Comparing the themes of holiness and corporateness pertinent to the covenant the book also reflects the covenant with Israel in relation to John’s understanding of the people of God. The notion of covenant, which embraces reference to the people of God as vine/vineyard in the Old Testament and Second Temple Period, underlies John’s vine metaphor. The book focuses research on ANE viticulture to determine the context(s) of when the vine was used to refer to Israel in a covenant relationship with God. In this historical context the Johannine vine metaphor receive fresh meaning and relevance for the people of God.
