In the food domain, cereal and legume grains occupy the front line, whereas, horticultural crops have occupied the second line of defense. For healthy diet cereals and legumes provide us with carbohydrates and protein, whereas, fruits and vegetables provide us minerals and vitamins. Both macro- and micro- nutrients are essential for human growth and development. The fruits and vegetables are the major source of micro-nutrients. It is estimated that up to 2.7 million lives could potentially be saved each year if fruit and vegetable production was sufficiently increased. Both at national and international levels, food and agriculture/horticulture development plans and estimates are basically developed, framed and implemented, and narrowed down to cereal production. In the present context of attaining nutrition security, this mode of thinking on ‘food’ needs to be changed to ‘nutrients’, which will include necessarily all those crops including fruit and vegetables which provide all macro- and micro-nutrients to ensure balanced nutrition needed for good human health. The present publication has attempted to reflect and discuss the above views and ideas on the subject of sustainable horticulture development and nutrition security in nine chapters with 32 articles by 32 authors.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study horticultural farming practices in Misewani, a semi-arid region in Kitui County, Eastern Kenya so as to establish strategies for sustainable horticulture farming in the region to address frequent droughts and severe famines that the region experiences. Three research questions were formulated to guide the research process with research question one on the nature and scope of sustainable farming, research question two on the nature and scope of horticultural farming in Kenya to provide an understanding of the wider horticulture farming environment within which horticulture farming in Misewani operates and research question three on horticultural farming practices in Misewani to establish the factors which need to be changed to make these practices more sustainable. A descriptive research methodology was used where research questions in and two used desk top research while research question three involved carrying out a field study. For the field study the accessible population was 10 farmers who formed the sampling frame and were all included in the field study because the number was small. In research questions one and two secondary data was used to answer questions on the nature and scope of sustainable farming and on horticulture farming in Kenya. Question three used primary data collected through interviews with farmers in Misewani which was analyzed using SPSS computer software for making inferences. The secondary data was also sorted and arranged for analysis and discussions to decision making in the conclusion and recommendation sections. The study found out that sustainable farming involves the use of a combination of strategies based on ecosystem approaches to produce crops in a way that conserves natural resources to achieve four main goals of food security, enhancing environmental sustainability, agricultural economic viability and enhancing quality of life for farmer, farm workers, and society as a whole. In Kenya horticulture farming is an important sector in contributing to food security and income sustainability and livelihoods of communities that participate in the horticulture farming but most of the farming strategies are unsustainable especially for the communities living in the arid and semi-arid regions of the country. In Misewani, horticulture farming is not widely practiced and in the few cases where it is practiced, it does not contribute much towards food security, economic sustainability and social wellbeing of the farmers as farmers use unsustainable farming practices for the regions climatic conditions. The study concluded that since sustainable farming practices based on ecosystem approaches can produce enough food to meet people?s need in a way that conserves resources and that it enables progress towards social equity and poverty reduction goals which in line with the UN millennium development goals (FAO 2011, (FAO, IFAD) and WFP 2013), farmers around the globe should be educated on these practices and supported to adopt them. Farmers in Kenya including those in Misewani should be educated on conservation agriculture principles which are cheaper forth poor farmer to adopt and which encourage farming in the dry regions because they can use available water resources efficiently to increase yields for better livelihoods while at the same time enhancing the natural environment. This study recommends the adoption rate of sustainable farming practices be up scaled to include all around the globe and especially the poor farmers because they are cheaper, resources saving, increase food productivity and improve livelihoods. In Kenya farmers should be educated on conservation agriculture principles and supported to adopt them so that they can stop using resources degrading practices and also for those in arid and semi-arid like Misewani to be able to participate in horticulture farming for food security and poverty reduction.
