Book Romanian Policy Towards Germany 1936 40

Download or read book Romanian Policy Towards Germany 1936 40 written by R. Haynes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book, based on archival research, contests the assumptions that Romania remained pro-Western in the late 1930s and only joined the Axis as a result of Western negligence and German pressure. Instead, Germany was drawn by Romanian politicians into political and economic cooperation with Bucharest. In the event, this proved Romania's undoing. Let down by her German protector, she was forced to cede territory to the Soviet Union, Hungary and Bulgaria. Subsequently, Romania was allowed into the alliance she sought with Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses how modernization and the birth of the nation state, with the concomitant impact of Western ideas, gave birth to a significantly different form of anti-Semitism in Romania. This type defined its national goals in a limited manner. That it did so would be critical in the 20th cent. for the survival of almost half a million Romanian Jews. Its unusual character would be hidden from view in most instances by a brutality of execution that has led observers over the course of the last hundred years or so to focus on the style rather than substance of what happened. The Romanians did not cooperate in the full execution of the Final Solution as the Nazis wanted and expected them to do. As they had done in the 19th cent., the Romanians attempted to counterpoise Great Power interests and thereby pursue their own self-interest whenever the Jewish Question came into play.

Book excerpt: Egyre kritikusábbá vált a helyzete Tokés Lászlónak, a legismertebb romániai ellenzékinek. A temesvári református lelkész hétrol hétre népes gyülekezet elott beszélt az országban tapasztalható elviselhetetlen életkörülményekrol és a rettegett román titkosrendorség, a Securitate terrorjáról. A diktatúrával való ilyen nyílt szembeszegülés példa nélküli volt Romániában. A renitenst sürgosen el kellett hallgattatni. Ám a hatalomnak elovigyázatosnak kellett lennie, hiszen nyugaton is figyelemmel követték a lelkipásztor sorsát. Az események drámai fordulatot vettek, amikor egy észak-amerikai magyar emigráns csoport két kanadait küldött Temesvárra, hogy videóinterjút készítsenek Tokéssel. A dátum 1989. március 20. A titokban leforgatott interjúnak végzetes következményei lettek – mind a lelkész, mind az egész ország számára.

In this carefully crafted volume, Michael Kort describes the wartime circumstances and thinking that form the context for the decision to use these weapons, surveys the major debates related to that decision, and provides a comprehensive collection of key primary source documents that illuminate the behavior of the United States and Japan during the closing days of World War II. Kort opens with a summary of the debate over Hiroshima as it has evolved since 1945. He then provides a historical overview of thye events in question, beginning with the decision and program to build the atomic bomb. Detailing the sequence of events leading to Japan's surrender, he revisits the decisive battles of the Pacific War and the motivations of American and Japanese leaders. Finally, Kort examines ten key issues in the discussion of Hiroshima and guides readers to relevant primary source documents, scholarly books, and articles.

Book Romanian Nationalists and the Holocaust

Download or read book Romanian Nationalists and the Holocaust written by Randolph L. Braham and published by East European Monographs. This book was released on 1998 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly publicized obscenity trial of Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness (1928) is generally recognized as the crystallizing moment in the construction of a visible modern English lesbian culture, marking a great divide between innocence and deviance, private and public, New Woman and Modern Lesbian. Yet despite unreserved agreement on the importance of this cultural moment, previous studies often reductively distort our reading of the formation of early twentieth-century lesbian identity, either by neglecting to examine in detail the developments leading up to the ban or by framing events in too broad a context against other cultural phenomena. Fashioning Sapphism locates the novelist Radclyffe Hall and other prominent lesbians--including the pioneer in women's policing, Mary Allen, the artist Gluck, and the writer Bryher--within English modernity through the multiple sites of law, sexology, fashion, and literary and visual representation, thus tracing the emergence of a modern English lesbian subculture in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Drawing on extensive new archival research, the book interrogates anew a range of myths long accepted without question (and still in circulation) concerning, to cite only a few, the extent of homophobia in the 1920s, the strategic deployment of sexology against sexual minorities, and the rigidity of certain cultural codes to denote lesbianism in public culture.
