Book excerpt: The average American considers the following to be minimum standards of living: no. 1—air conditioning, no. 2—hot running water, no. 3—an iPhone. Most people on the planet do not enjoy these extravagances. My hope for every American is to work outside the United States with non-Americans for one year before they are thirty years old. In this manner, one truly understands that Americans are different, not necessarily in a good way. Who is the one nation in the history of the world to unleash nuclear weapons on other humans? Sure there were reasons, but all media and political quibbling aside, only one country in the history of the world has dropped nuclear bombs on other human beings. Other people’s goal is “to live just like the American’s.” They will catch up, or we will fall behind. With luxury comes responsibility. They go hand in hand. Please open your mind, relax, and enjoy my story.

In TACOS, Mark Miller adds a chef's sensibility to this vibrant primer for building delicious and authentic tacos. The heart of a great taco is its filling, and TACOS brims with filling recipes for chicken, fowl, pork, beef, lamb, game, seafood, vegetable, and breakfast tacos. Miller's recipes are a satisfying balance between impeccably rendered classics like Carnitas (crusty fried pork shoulder), Rajas and Cheese (strips of roasted poblano chiles with melting queso Oaxaca), and Beef Ranchero (with its smoky-spicy sauce), and fresh, sophisticated riffs like Chicken with Apples and Goat Cheese, Baja-Style Tempura Fish, and Roasted Tomatoes and Pumpkin Seed Pesto. Rounding out the book are luscious photographs; thorough instructions for making soft tortillas from scratch and crafting them into crispy variations; recipes for salsas and accompaniments such as Guacamole and Refritos ("refried" beans); and a suite of essential techniques, like roasting chiles and blackening tomatoes. Each filling recipe provides suggestions for the best tortilla choices, salsas and sides, and beverages to complement the tacos—giving you all you need to make your next taco experience as authentic, inspired, and downright delicious as even the most well-seasoned taquero could make it.

Book The Compton Cowboys

Download or read book The Compton Cowboys written by Walter Thompson-Hernandez and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Thompson-Hernández's portrayal of Compton's black cowboys broadens our perception of Compton's young black residents, and connects the Compton Cowboys to the historical legacy of African Americans in the west. An eye-opening, moving book.”—Margot Lee Shetterly, New York Times bestselling author of Hidden Figures “Walter Thompson-Hernández has written a book for the ages: a profound and moving account of what it means to be black in America that is awe inspiring in its truth-telling and limitless in its empathy. Here is an American epic of black survival and creativity, of terrible misfortune and everyday resilience, of grace, redemption and, yes, cowboys.”— Junot Díaz, Pulitzer prize-winning author of This is How You Lose Her A rising New York Times reporter tells the compelling story of The Compton Cowboys, a group of African-American men and women who defy stereotypes and continue the proud, centuries-old tradition of black cowboys in the heart of one of America’s most notorious cities. In Compton, California, ten black riders on horseback cut an unusual profile, their cowboy hats tilted against the hot Los Angeles sun. They are the Compton Cowboys, their small ranch one of the very last in a formerly semirural area of the city that has been home to African-American horse riders for decades. To most people, Compton is known only as the home of rap greats NWA and Kendrick Lamar, hyped in the media for its seemingly intractable gang violence. But in 1988 Mayisha Akbar founded The Compton Jr. Posse to provide local youth with a safe alternative to the streets, one that connected them with the rich legacy of black cowboys in American culture. From Mayisha’s youth organization came the Cowboys of today: black men and women from Compton for whom the ranch and the horses provide camaraderie, respite from violence, healing from trauma, and recovery from incarceration. The Cowboys include Randy, Mayisha’s nephew, faced with the daunting task of remaking the Cowboys for a new generation; Anthony, former drug dealer and inmate, now a family man and mentor, Keiara, a single mother pursuing her dream of winning a national rodeo championship, and a tight clan of twentysomethings--Kenneth, Keenan, Charles, and Tre--for whom horses bring the freedom, protection, and status that often elude the young black men of Compton. The Compton Cowboys is a story about trauma and transformation, race and identity, compassion, and ultimately, belonging. Walter Thompson-Hernández paints a unique and unexpected portrait of this city, pushing back against stereotypes to reveal an urban community in all its complexity, tragedy, and triumph. The Compton Cowboys is illustrated with 10-15 photographs.

Book Alexandra the Great

Download or read book Alexandra the Great written by Deb Aronson and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a little foal with a white upside-down exclamation point on her forehead was born one morning in Kentucky, the heart of America's horse racing region, problems mounted quickly. Rejected by her mother, the filly would need to be accepted and nursed by another mare. As she grew, the tall, knock-kneed girl remained skinny and scruffy, with paltry muscles. Considered an "ugly duckling," she was unsuitable as a champion racehorse, her owner proclaimed, and must be sold. But two days before the sale, an examination revealed a medical condition—now she was impossible to sell! What would become of this problem filly? Alexandra the Great tells one of the greatest underdog tales in American sports—the story of Rachel Alexandra, who grew up to become one of the most remarkable racehorses in history. Despite dominating every filly her age, her owner refused to let her compete against male horses. When a new owner saw her potential and raced her against bigger, stronger males, Rachel Alexandra thrived and went on to win the Preakness, the first filly to do so in 85 years, and the Woodward, a feat never before achieved by a filly. Having grown into a strong, muscular, dominating athlete, Rachel Alexandra was named 2009 Horse of the Year, broke records, graced the pages of Vogue magazine, and showed people around the world exactly what it means to "run like a girl." Including vivid details gleaned from interviews with Rachel Alexandra's owners, veterinarian, beloved jockey Calvin Borel, and more, Alexandra the Great gives readers an exciting and emotional look at both the humans and horses who pour their hearts and souls into the world of Thoroughbred training and racing.

Book excerpt: Horse racing isn’t for nice girls like Alex. She’s been told again and again: stick to horse shows, stick to riding lessons, stick to the relative safety of the suburban equestrian center where she has been a working student since grade school. But Alex can’t shake the conviction that the Thoroughbred life is her destiny. When her unstable trainer cuts her off from horses, Alex finally has to obey her instinct to run away from the safe version of life. She heads to Ocala, where horse racing is king, with no plan and no leads on jobs. When she meets handsome, successful racehorse trainer Alexander White, she feels an instant connection with him. Could this be her dream come true? Falling for Alexander and learning to stay on young racehorses all at once: that’s risky business. But it’s a risk Alex is willing to take — until a storm of emotion threatens to founder her new life. Nothing at Alexander’s gorgeous Thoroughbred farm is as simple as it seems, and she’s not the only one lining up for Alexander’s affection — or his horses. How many times will Alex obey her urge to run away when things get too real? And what happens to her dreams if she can’t stay the course? He was a surveyor in the hospital accreditation division. He surveyed acute care hospitals, critical access hospitals, Department of Defense hospitals and hospitals run by the Bureau of Prisons. He also participated frequently in “for cause” surveys done to investigate serious hospital complaints. Dr. Kachik became infatuated with harness racing while in college. Book The Gambler and the Bug Boy

Download or read book The Gambler and the Bug Boy written by John Christgau and published by Bison Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scandal on the Turf!" the Los Angeles Times proclaimed. It was October 1940, a mere few months after Seabiscuit had won the Santa Anita Derby, and now this bombshell: "Six Jockeys Admit Horse Races Fixed." The Gambler and the Bug Boy recounts this dark chapter in horse racing history. At its center is Bernard "Big" Mooney, a flashy L.A. bookmaker who began his seedy career by threatening young jockeys with death if they didn't "pull" their horses. His unwilling partner is Albert Siler, a callow, eighteen-year-old apprentice rider (a so-called bug boy) from eastern Oregon. John Christgau tells how Big Mooney manipulated this promising rider and how Siler tried to escape the gambler's criminal grip without ruining his career. Christgau's book gives all the harrowing details of the unraveling plot and the botched court case that followed which riveted the attention of the nation. Told in full for the first time, this story brings to light a little-known but important horse racing scandal.

Book Other People s Horses

Download or read book Other People s Horses written by Natalie Keller Reinert and published by Natalie Keller Reinert. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ★ Semi-Finalist, 2013 Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award "This is a horse story for grown-ups. The Black Stallion for adults." "Written by a horse person for horse people" "Enchanting and consuming." Six horses and Saratoga. It's a young trainer's dream come true, and it's happening for Alex at last: Alexander is entrusting the farm's racing string to her while he heads Down Under to help run his sick brother's farm. But Saratoga isn't interested in Alex without Alexander. Unproven and decidedly female in a man's world, Alex finds herself the target of old-school racetrackers certain she married her way into training good horses. At the same time, her naïve assistant, Kerri, is far too interested in the less-than-scrupulous trainer who shares their barn. But running a racing stable doesn't leave much time for petty fights and stable rivalries. Horses need to be worked, races need to be run. And Alex has her eye on something besides the winner's circle: a funny-faced filly, a chestnut nobody with a spotty blaze and a decided lack of brakes. Saratoga thinks the filly has a screw loose. But Alex knows better. From training track gossip to tack-room confidentials, OTHER PEOPLE'S HORSES is the perfect stand-alone novel for fans of horses, equestrian sport, and horse racing -- or enjoy it alongside the companion novels in the Alex & Alexander Series.
