Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse in War and Famous Canadian Horses In this book it is intended to depict to the reader, with as few words as possible, the part played by the horse in the Great War, and this I trust has been accomplished with the aid of the illustrations contained therein. The intention is to place any profits derived from the sale of this book into the hands of the Kiwanis Club - for use in connection with their work of the under-privileged child - and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in their work of assisting those who cannot speak for themselves. My many thanks are extended to General Sir Arthur Currie for his foreword and appreciation. Mr. H. G. Waites, of Toronto, the noted animal artist, for his assistance in reproducing the majority of the famous Canadian horses which have added greatly to the attraction of the book. I am also grateful to the R. S. P. C. A., London, England, for permission to reproduce a number of their pictures. To the publishers of the Tatler and Sphere of London, England, for their kind permission to reproduce the picture entitled "Good Bye, Old Ma"; they own the copyright, and are prepared to supply photogravure and coloured copies. To the "Cavalry Journal" for their kind permission to reproduce the picture entitled "Lance versus Lance." To Messrs. Tugwell and Company, of Toronto, for a number of Canadian Official Photographs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French-Canadian Horse The old-time french-canadian pony, as he was called, was admitted to be a little horse of iron. Though there are no records to prove it, he could probably develop and keep on developing more power per hundred pounds of his weight than any other member of the equine family. This is explained by the fact that the first animals of this breed were sent from France to Canada by Louis XIV, who liked to do things in great style and who had given instructions to his minister Colbert, the latter very much interested to see the new colony prosper, to pick out the best specimens in his country. These horses, which remained the property of the King for three years, were distributed amongst the gentlemen of Canada who had most helped colonization and farming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Horse: Or the War Horse: From the Time of the Roman Invasion Till Its Development Into the Shire Horse The early foundation stock from which investigation proves that our modern Shire horses are descended was brought to a high state of perfection for its special purpose, not only by the judicious introduction of foreign blood, but by wise enactments of the Legis lature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shire Horse: In Peace and War By those who take an interest in the world's heaviest breed of horses, as well as war news, this book may be tolerated, seeing that it deals with the old War Horse of Britain, many true descendants being actively engaged in moving tons and guns at the present time. I make no claim to having written anything new, but as a kind of pocket record of what Shire breeders, and exhibitors, have hitherto accomplished with their animals the facts herein contained may be useful, and I hope that all readers, as well as Shire breeders, will forgive any inaccuracies in my figures and all the imperfections in this my first attempt at book-writing. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian National Bureau of Breeding Limited: For the Improvement of the Breed of Horses in Canada by Means of the Thoroughbred Cross Every man who has a Bureau stallion is supplied with a service book in which is registered the name of the owner of every mare. So that the Bureau can always keep in touch with farmers who have Bureau colts. There is a double advantage ll. This. In the first place the Bureau knows just where to send instructions and advice regarding the care of mares and foals. And in the second place it is able to direct War Office buyers and others to the very farms where half breds can be bought. And this brings us to one of the most important phases of the work of the National Buteau. It is now admitted on both sides of the Atlantic that the new organization if successful will solve the remount problem for England by creating a type of horse suitable for the Imperial Cavalry Reserve. Book England s Horses for Peace and War

Download or read book England s Horses for Peace and War written by Vere D. Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England's Horses for Peace and War: Their Origin, Improvement and Scarcity Writers of varied classes of opinions have dealt with it through works of standard literature, and the medium of the press and periodicals. Men capable of handling it in its varied ramifications and details have devoted energy and ability to exhaustive essays for the last quarter of a century on the subject of our general and military horse supply. From such utilitarian and highly commendable efforts, we have at length aroused the consideration of the great and powerful, without, up to the present, any result beyond that of incontestable practical confirmation of the warnings of writers on the subject. The Royal Commission granted upon Lord Rosebery's motion in the House of Lords, have discovered, with mathematical accuracy, the inadequacy of supply to our demand; but, unfortunately, nothing has been yet done, or suggested, to rectify so alarming and inconvenient a state of things.
