Book Horse Equipment of the Civil War Era

Download or read book Horse Equipment of the Civil War Era written by Howard R. Crouch and published by Scs Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is on the horse equipment of the civilian and soldier (both U.S. and Confederate) in the era from approximately 1840 to 1870. In some places, it has been purposely broadened in scope of time in both directions to include significant items or information. This makes for a more definite identification of the actual Civil War items in many cases. It is full of clear, sharp photos and descriptions. Western saddles are also shown. The horse in American history, breeds, saddle and equipment manufacture are all comprehensively covered. Plus -- A special supplement -- "The Fighting Man and His Mount" which displays numerous original dragoon and cavalry photographs, many previously unpublished.

Book On which Everything Depends

Download or read book On which Everything Depends written by Jill R. Hurtt and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses and mules were essential to the conduct and, ultimately, the outcome of the U.S. Civil War. Horses and mules fulfilled such important duties as hauling supplies to camp, providing the means by which the artillery was maneuvered in battle, and granting cavalry units their essential mobile capabilities. While many historians have explored the importance of the cavalry, artillery, and transportation services, the appreciation shown to the equines who were essential to these units has been relatively slim, and the logistical concerns that resulted from the units' reliance on equines are often minimized or ignored. Providing a basic level of care for millions of horses and mules affected the decisions and plans of military and civilian leaders throughout the Civil War, as did the need to procure more equines; such considerations consequently had a significant impact upon the war and its outcome. The Confederacy's inability to procure a sufficient number of horses and mules for its forces in the field, as well as the fodder they needed, eventually made it impossible for some commanders to operate effectively. Finally, the study of horses and mules and the feelings of camaraderie, gratitude, and empathy that many of the soldiers who served alongside these equines felt for them is integral to gaining a more thorough understanding of the conflict and those who lived through it. It is my hope that this work will increase the readers' understanding and appreciation of the important roles that horses and mules played in the Civil War, the myriad logistical considerations that reliance upon equines entailed, and the decisions that these logistical considerations necessitated. Such details have frequently been overlooked in historical accounts of the war; appreciating the contributions made and problems posed by equines is essential to increasing understanding of this influential American conflict.

Book Texas Civil War Artifacts

Download or read book Texas Civil War Artifacts written by Richard Mather Ahlstrom and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most popular literary subjects worldwide is the American Civil War. In addition to an enormous number of history buffs, there are tens of thousands of collectors of Civil War artifacts. In the last fifty years, several books have been written concerning the equipment associated with soldiers of specific Confederate states, but no book until now has ever chronicled the military equipment used by Texas soldiers. Texas Civil War Artifacts is the first comprehensive guide to the physical culture of Texas Civil War soldiers. Texas military equipment differs in a number of ways from the equipment produced for the eastern Confederate states. Most of the Texas-produced equipment was blacksmithed, or local-artisan made, and in many cases featured the Lone Star as a symbol of Texas. Contemporary Civil War literature frequently mentions that most soldiers of Texas displayed the Lone Star somewhere on their uniform or equipment. In this groundbreaking volume, Richard Mather Ahlstrom has photographed and described more than five hundred Texas-related artifacts. He shows the diverse use of the Lone Star on hat pins, waist-belt plates, buckles, horse equipment, side knives, buttons, and canteens. In addition, the weapons that Texans used in the Civil War are featured in chapters on the Tucker Sherrard and Colt pistols; shotguns, rifles, and muskets; and swords. Rounding out the volume are chapters on leather accouterments, uniforms and headgear, and a gallery of Texas soldiers in photographs. This book will prove to be a valuable reference guide for Civil War collectors, historians, museum curators, re-enactors, and federal and state agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses are one of the many unsung heroes of the American Civil War. These majestic animals were impressed into service, trained, prepared for battle, and turned into expendable implements of war. There is more to this story, however. When an army’s means and survival is predicated upon an animal whose instincts are to flee rather than fight, a bond of mutual trust and respect between handler and horse must be forged. Ultimately, the Battle of Gettysburg resulted in thousands of horses killed and wounded. Their story deserves telling, from a time not so far removed.

Book From Horses to Horsepower

Download or read book From Horses to Horsepower written by Alexander Bielakowski and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2019-09-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following World War I, horse cavalry entered a period during which it fought for its very existence against mechanized vehicles. On the Western Front, the stalemate of trench warfare became the defining image of the war throughout the world. While horse cavalry remained idle in France, the invention of the tank and its potential for success led many non-cavalry officers to accept the notion that the era of horse cavalry had passed. During the interwar period, a struggle raged within the U.S. Cavalry regarding its future role, equipment, and organization. Some cavalry officers argued that mechanized vehicles supplanted horses as the primary means of combat mobility within the cavalry, while others believed that the horse continued to occupy that role. The response of prominent cavalry officers to this struggle influenced the form and function of the U.S. Cavalry during World War II.

Download or read book Horses Saddles and Bridles written by General William H. Carter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horses Saddles and Bridles The first edition was published in 1895. At that time the cessation of Indian hostilities and consequent absence of active field duties had begun to change the old and familiar conditions of army service. Those officers who had neither the experience of frontier service, nor the opportunities possessed by the veterans of the Civil War, to observe the operations of large bodies of troops, found need of more detailed instruction in many branches of their profession, to keep pace with modern progress and be prepared for the emergency of sudden war. The service schools filled much of this want and, year after year, the graduates returning to their regiments with progressive ideas, gave abundant proof of the opportunities afforded to diligent and ambitious young officers to acquire a knowledge of elementary technical details as well as of the higher branches of military education. With the increase of the army, following recent military operations in the various and widely separated parts of the world, the limitations of the service schools compelled the establishment of garrison schools. The amplification and fulfilment of the schemes of Generals Sherman, Upton and others, who, following in their footsteps, and recognizing the value of their initial efforts, have made it not only possible for each and every officer to thoroughly qualify himself for the important duties of his profession but have made it inexcusable for him not to do so. Book Those Damn Horse Soldiers

Download or read book Those Damn Horse Soldiers written by George Walsh and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many accounts of the Civil War battles, armies, and key figures have been written over the years, but none have looked at the bloodiest war in our nation's history through the eyes of the cavalry. The horse soldiers in the Civil War are often referred to as the last of the cavaliers, men who valued their honor as much as their cause. In this sweeping saga George Walsh brings to life anew the gallant horse soldiers of the North and South, showing in dramatic detail how their raids and expeditions affected the outcome of the war and how their fortunes waxed and waned. Book Weapons of the Civil War Cavalryman

Download or read book Weapons of the Civil War Cavalryman written by John Walter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American Civil War, the mounted soldiers fighting on both sides of the conflict carried a wide array of weapons, from sabers and lances to carbines, revolvers, and other firearms. Though some sections of the cavalry placed their trust in the sabre, the advent of viable breechloading carbines -- especially repeaters such as the Spencer -- was to transform warfare within little more than a decade of General Lee's final surrender at Appomattox. However, output struggled to keep up with unprecedented demands on manufacturing technology and distribution in areas where communication was difficult and in states whose primary aim was to equip their own men rather than contribute to the arming of Federal or Confederate regiments. In addition, the almost unparalleled losses of men and equipment ensured that almost any firearm, effectual or not, was pressed into service. Consequently, the sheer variety of weaponry carried reflected the mounted soldiers' various roles in different theatres of operation, but also the availability -- or otherwise -- of weapons, notably on the Confederate side. Fully illustrated, this study assesses the effectiveness of the many different weapons arming the Civil War cavalryman and analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the decisions made after 1865 concerning the armament of the US cavalry.
