The term is only relative, and indicates that inbreeding and interbreeding have been restricted within certain limits during a number of generations. The mistaken idea is still prevalent in some quarters that the pure Arab horse is Me one thoroughbred horse, cast in the same mould as the first created one, retaining the same original qualities without deterioration or alteration, and the eternal prototype of the species -that as he was in the beginning, so he is and ever shall be, - or, as some French writers have described him, the natural horse (meyer! Book Horse Breeding and Rearing of Colts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Horse Breeding and Rearing of Colts Classic Reprint written by John Gunion Rutherford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Breeding and Rearing of Colts Having now briefly mentioned the laws which govern the science of breeding, it may be well to devote a few words to their application. By the careful selection of good individuals of proven prepotency all the varieties of the horse now known as pure breeds have been brought to the present standard of excellence; and by using the standard thus made ready to his hand, I believe it is possible for the modern horseman to breed any kind of horse he may fancy. While I do not propose to advise farmers as to the particular kind they ought to breed, I may here formulate a few brief rules, the observance of which will, I am certain, take no money out of their pockets. Book Management and Breeding of Horses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Management and Breeding of Horses Classic Reprint written by Merritt Wesley Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management and Breeding of Horses Because of the increasing popularity and field of useful ness, the mule is given prominence. This necessitates a consideration of the several breeds of jacks, as well as special suggestions on the care and development of the mule-breeding jack, as not all jacks are suitable for siring mules. In choosing the subject matter a wide search has been made and it has been necessary to eliminate much valu able data, as there is quite an accumulation of material upon the production, care and use of the horse. In this elimination, the author has attempted to keep in mind the needs of the farmer, breeder and student. Download or read book Horse Breeding Recollections Classic Reprint written by Georg Lehndorff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Breeding Recollections The principal requisite in a good racehorse is soundness, again soundness, and nothing but soundness; and the object of the thoroughbred is to imbue the limbs, the constitution, and the nerves of the half-bred horse with that essential quality, and thereby enhance its capabilities. The thoroughbred can, however, fulfil its mission only pro vided the yearly produce be continually subjected to severe trials in public. The only appropriate test, proved by the experience of two centuries, is the racecourse, although its adversaries oppose it as too one-sided, and propose in its stead others of more or less impracticability. The last strug gle for victory, in which culminates the exertion of the race, results from the co-operation of the intellectual, the physical, and the mechanical qualities of the horse, the development of which combined power is higher and more reliable than any that can be obtained in the same animal by other means. The combination of those three qualities forms the value of the horse destined for fast work: the mechanical, in respect to the outward shape and construction; the physical, as regards the soundness and normal development of the digestive organs and motive power; the intellectual, or the will and the energy to put the other two into motion and persevere to the utmost. The attained speed is not the aim, but only the gauge, of the performance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stud Farm: Or, Hints on Breeding for the Turf, the Chase, and the Road For more than five and twenty years, the author of this little work has been engaged in the management of horses; and as during all that period he has never neglected any opportunity of acquiring practical information on every point connected therewith, he is not without hope that he may be able to throw out a few hints on this subject, that may be worth the reader's attention. To extensive and experienced breeders, he cannot expect that many of his suggestions will be new; though, possibly, even they may "cull a spray" that may be useful. But the less practised, he trusts, will find in this little volume many hints which may be turned to good account. To the farmer, especially, the author desires to address himself, and would earnestly call his attention to a source of profit which, if zealously pursued, will assuredly exceed most, if not every other speculation coming within his province. I must also point out that my work at the Trakehnen Stud has kept me always so actively employed that, unfortunately, I have not been able to spare the necessary time to go thoroughly through the large mass of material which I have accumulated in the course of many years, and to treat same in as exhaustive a manner as an expert ought. In writing the last Chapter on The Establishment of Studs my time was very limited indeed, and I have had to be satisfied with simply giving an outline. Twelve months ago I made application to Mr. Druce, the Secretary of this Club, to make this address, but was unfortunately too late, all arrangements for 1884 having been then made. Very many causes have been assigned for the decline of horse-breeding. It will be noticed that I accept one more particularly, to wit, the failure in per severing to raise animals of size, quality, and value. The principal Object which I have in View, therefore, is to make our shortcomings in this respect more gene rally known, and to offer suggestions for breeding horses of greater size, as they will always command a ready sale at prices remunerative to the breeder.
