Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook 'Biochemistry' has become one of the most preferred text books (in India and many other countries) for the students as well as teachers in medical, biological and other allied sciences. The book has undergone three editions, several reprints, and revised reprints in a span of 13 years. There are many biochemistry textbooks in the market. Some of them are purely basic while others are applied, and there are very few books which cover both these aspects together. For this reason, the students learning biochemistry in their undergraduate courses have to depend on multiple books to acquire a sound knowledge of the subject. This book, 'Biochemistry' is unique with a simultaneous and equal emphasis on basic and applied aspects of biochemistry. This textbook offers an integration of medical and pure sciences, comprehensively written to meet the curriculum requirements of undergraduate courses in medical, dental, pharmacy, life-sciences and other categories (agriculture, veterinary, etc.). This book is designed to develop in students a sustained interest and enthusiasm to learn and develop the concepts in biochemistry in a logical and stepwise manner. It incorporates a variety of pedagogic aids, besides colour illustrations to help the students understand the subject quickly and to the maximum. The summary and biomedical/clinical concepts are intended for a rapid absorption and assimilation of the facts and concepts in biochemistry. The self-assessment exercises will stimulate the students to think rather than merely learn the subject. In addition, these exercises (essays, short notes, fill in the blanks, multiple choice questions) set at different difficulty levels, will cater to the needs of all the categories of learners. New to This Edition - The book offers an integration of medical and pure sciences, and is comprehensively written, revised and updated to meet the curriculum requirements of Medical, Pharmacy, Dental, Veterinary, Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences, Life Sciences, and others studying Biochemistry as one of the subjects. - It is the first text book on Biochemistry in English with multi-colour illustrations by an author from Asia. Download or read book Human Growth Hormone written by A. Stuart Mason and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Growth Hormone is a compendium of papers that discusses all aspects of human growth hormone (HGH) relevant in the treatment of dwarfs who are HGH deficient. This book discusses the approach of growth hormone treatment including the preparation of the hormone, its effect and interactions with other hormones, the methods used to detect growth hormone in human plasma, as well as its clinical applications. One author discusses the preparation of human growth hormone, its storage, method of bioassay, and procedures for ampouling HGH for clinical use. A couple of authors review the metabolic actions of HGH, namely, on the anabolic and skeletal systems, on carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and miscellaneous effects (renotropic, aldosterone, haematopoietic). One paper evaluates the treatment of dwarfism with HGH, and reports that in cases of HGH deficiency, the use of such treatment can be effective as long as the growth potential of the patient remains, and antibodies do not interfere with the treatment. The compendium can prove helpful for endocrinologists, genetic scientists, cellular microbiologists, and scientists involved in pharmacology and developmental anatomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of arterial hypertension is both long and short; long, since BRIGHT (1827) first related hardness of the pulse to hardness of the kidneys and hyper. trophy of the heart; short in that modern research began in the late twenties. Most of what we know of these diseases has been discovered in the past fifty years. The modern story should have begun in 1897 when an extract of kidney was shown to be pressor. But little was done with knowledge until about 1929 when the relationship of this kidney extract called "renin" to hypertension was pos· tulated. The pressor effects were, however, unlike most of those seen with sub· stances such as epinephrine or vasopressin. Plasma was required for action of renin and the active substance appeared to be protein. In 1939, it was shown that renin was not in itself a pressor substance but rather a proteolytic enzyme which produced a powerful pressor substance acting on a substrate synthesized by the liver. Later it was noted that the first definable step after the formation of this peptide was cleaving of the decapeptide which had little or no demonstrable activity, with loss of two amino acids to form the octapeptide called "angiotensin". Within a decade synthesis was achieved which made the substance available for world·wide study.
Download or read book Growth Hormone Deficiency in Adults written by Jens O. L. Jørgensen and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been known for over 40 years that GH-deficient-children benefit from replacement with the hormone. But GH, essential for longitudinal growth, also plays a role after completion of final height. With the introduction of biosynthetic human GH 20 years ago, the use of GH was no longer restricted to severe growth retardation in hypopituitary children. This book will take the reader behind the myths of GH and into the real world of clinical endocrinology. The contributions stem from recognized clinicians and scientists who have been working in the field for decades. The contents encompass traditional end points of GH therapy such as body composition, bone biology and physical performance. Attention is also devoted to diagnostic aspects and side effects. Additional features range from clinical epidemiology to quality of life, and novel areas such as the impact of traumatic brain injury on pituitary function are also covered. The present volume of Frontiers of Hormone Research is essential reading for health care professionals interested in clinical endocrinology and GH.

Book excerpt: Today, treatment options for cancer patients typically include surgery, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. While these therapies have saved lives and reduced pain and suffering, cancer still takes millions of lives every year around the world. Researchers are now developing advanced therapeutic strategies such as immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and combination nanotechnology for drug delivery. In addition, the identification of new biomarkers will potentiate early-stage diagnosis. Molecular Targets and Cancer presents information about cancer diagnosis and therapy in a simple way. It covers several aspects of the topic with updated information on par with medical board levels. The book features contributions from experts and includes an overview of cancer from basic biology and pathology, classifications, surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, types of cancer, treatment and prognosis. The first part of this book introduces the reader to cancer epidemiology, genetic alterations in cancer, exogenous and endogenous factors in carcinogenesis, roles for growth factors in cancer progression, cell signaling in cancer, transcription factors in cancer, and cancer genetics and epigenetics. This comprehensive guide is a valuable resource for oncologists, researchers, and all medical professionals who work in cancer care and research.
