Book Tubulointerstitial and Cystic Disease of the Kidney

Download or read book Tubulointerstitial and Cystic Disease of the Kidney written by Susan M. Dodd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years, much renal research has focused on the pathology of the glomerulus, where many primary renal insults occur. However, nearly thirty years have passed since Risdon's study made the apparently anomalous observation that the extent of damage to the tubulointerstitial compartment is the major determinant of renal outcome in a variety of human glomerular diseases. This volume covers various aspects of tubulointerstitial disease, and starts with an update on cystic disease of the kidney, by Drs. WILSON and FALKENSTEIN, which includes recent experimental data on the altered properties of cystic epithelium. My own chapter gives an overview of the mechanisms of tubulo interstitial damage in progressive renal disease and includes a dis cussion of the possible role of cytokines, vasoactive peptides and peptide growth factors found over the last few years to be secreted by renal tubular cells. These comments are expanded in the contribution by Dr. WOLF and Professor NEILSON, who provide a detailed account of the cellular biology of tubulointerstitial growth. The earliest studies from the 19608 attempted to correlate histo morphometry of the tubulointerstitium with renal outcome. Dr. KHAN and Professor SINNIAH provide us with an update on mor phometric methods as applied to the kidney using new techniques. Similar techniques are employed by Dr. IVANYI and Professor OLSEN who give a detailed stereomorphological account of tubulitis both in acute allograft rejection, where its- recognition is central to the diagnosis, and in other forms of tubulointerstitial disease.

Book The Renin angiotensin System and Progression of Renal Diseases

Download or read book The Renin angiotensin System and Progression of Renal Diseases written by Gunter Wolf and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has long been seen as a systemic endocrine system in which angiotensin II (ANG II) is solely involved in blood pressure regulation and the mediation of aldosterone release. However, it is now known that specific organ systems exhibit their own local RAS, functioning for the most part independently from their systemic counterpart. A deluge of data from the last decade has shown that ANG II displays many more functions than just regulating blood pressure: ANG II is a growth factor, exhibits profibrogenic actions, and even serves as a proinflammatory cytokine. It is now clear that this peptide plays a pivotal role in the progression of chronic kidney disease towards endstage renal failure. Clinical studies have provided compelling evidence that interference with ANG II slows this deterioration of renal function. This publication presents the first comprehensive summary of this important topic: Basic concepts as well as clinical aspects of the RAS are reviewed by international experts who made many of the key discoveries that constitute our contemporary understanding of ANG II as a central factor in the progression of renal disease. This publication should be read by physicians treating patients with chronic renal diseases (internists, nephrologists and urologists). Moreover, basic scientists such as renal physiologists, renal pathologists and biochemists who want a comprehensive overview of the subject will profit from reading this book.

Book excerpt: Bradykinin is a type of plasma hormone that causes blood vessels to dilate, resulting in a drop in blood pressure, the contraction of muscles in the lungs, intestines, and uterus, and pain. The Kinin System reviews the molecular biology of the kinins through their roles in a complex array of inflammatory conditions such as asthma, GI disease, cardiovascular complaints and examines the future therapeutic opportunities. From the prepublication reviews:"A delicious masterpiece."--Chef's DigestThe Kinin System is a comprehensive, timely book covering all aspects of the kinin system from its disocvery to the pathophysiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology of the mechanisms regulating kinin production to kinin receptors in health and disease. The authors take a refreshingly different view of the kinin system than previous books on the subject. Several chapters contain new information on the gene expression, regulation, and cell surface presentation of kininogens and kallikreins, as well as new data, some of it from human studies, on the role of kinins in pain angiogenesis, tissue repair, sepsis, arthritis, asthma, allergic rhinits, myocardial ischemia, and other diseases.* * Offers new information on kinin reception, regulation of gene expression of receptors, and kinin-generating proteins.* Provides a distinctly immunopharmacological approach to the kinin system.* Reviews of the role of kinins in disease and inlcudes data from human studies.* Includes information that is fully up-to-date and comprehensive.

Book New Aspects of the Renin Angiotensin System in Cardiovascular and Renal Diseases

Download or read book New Aspects of the Renin Angiotensin System in Cardiovascular and Renal Diseases written by Dulce Elena Casarini and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is a hormonal system that is responsible for regulating plasma sodium ion concentration and arterial blood pressure in the body. The system involves several peptides such as angiotensin I and II as well as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) to enable the constriction of arterial blood vessels in the lung. Angiotensin II also stimulates the production of the hormone aldosterone in the kidneys which brings sodium ions into the bloodstream in exchange for potassium ions. Malfunctions of the RAS can lead to hypertension, heart failure, diabetes and renal complications. Thus the biochemical components of this system serve as important targets for therapeutic drugs. This monograph is a compilation of updated reviews on the RAS. The monograph covers describes the components of the system to explaining its physiological and clinical features in the cardiovascular system and the kidneys. This is followed by sections explaining the biochemistry of the RAS system in cardiovascular and renal disease and the pharmacology of relevant therapeutic drugs. Additional information on the effect of exercise states and methods to quantify angiotensins for molecular diagnosis is also presented in the concluding sections. Information in the monograph will be of interest to physiologists and endocrinologists involved in medical studies or clinical practice. Readers will be able to understand the RAS with a holistic frame of reference.
