Book Stem Cells and Prostate Cancer

Download or read book Stem Cells and Prostate Cancer written by Scott D. Cramer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent evidence demonstrates that normal prostate tissue contains stem cells. There is also accumulating evidence that prostate cancer contains a population of cells with stem cell-like characteristics referred to as cancer stem cells, or tumor initiating cells. Both the normal prostate stem cell and cancer stem cell populations have important implications for the generation, therapeutic targeting, and prevention of prostate cancer. The purpose of this book is to explore the role of stem cells in prostate cancer, which is becoming an increasingly hot trend in cancer research.

Book Drosophila Ovarian Stem Cell Establishment is Regulated by Nuclear Hormone Receptor Ftz f1

Download or read book Drosophila Ovarian Stem Cell Establishment is Regulated by Nuclear Hormone Receptor Ftz f1 written by Hanna E. Berghout and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stem cells are a fundamental underpinning of tissue biology. Loss of the self-renewing function of stem cells leads to conditions such as infertility and tissue wasting. Stem cells integrate a variety of signals to maintain their fate and proliferative capacity. Although intrinsic and local cues are well studied, less is known about how extrinsic signals, such as hormones, affect stem cell fate and function. The highly characterized Drosophila melanogaster steroid hormone ecdysone regulates germline stem cell (GSC) proliferation and self-renewal, as well as oogenesis and metamorphosis. Though many genes, including nuclear hormone receptor ftz transcription factor 1 (ftz-f1), are thought to be targets of ecdysone signaling, it is unclear how these targets impact GSC fate and function. To explore the role of ftz-f1 in ovarian stem cells, we used the UAS-GAL4 system and RNA interference (RNAi) to reduce ftz-f1 function specifically in germ cells or surrounding somatic cells. We demonstrate that ftz-f1 is intrinsically required for the establishment of the proper number of GSCs during development. Reduced ftz-f1 function in germ cells leads to a significant decrease in average number of GSCs. During larval stages, ftz-f1 depleted ovaries contain a number of PGCs located significantly further away from the terminal filament stacks. Our results also suggest that ftz-f1 is required in ovarian somatic cells during development for proper movement of germ cells out of the germarium in adult stages. Taken together, we suggest ftz-f1 function during juvenile stages is critical for the establishment of GSCs and development of their progeny.

Book Assessing the Medical Risks of Human Oocyte Donation for Stem Cell Research

Download or read book Assessing the Medical Risks of Human Oocyte Donation for Stem Cell Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-03-22 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely understood that stem cell treatments have the potential to revolutionize medicine. Because of this potential, in 2004 California voters approved Proposition 71 to set up a 10-year, $3 billion program to fund research on stem cells. Under the direction of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, this program will pay to build facilities for stem cell research and will fund doctors and scientists to carry out research with the ultimate goal of helping to develop therapies based on stem cells. For this research to move forward, however, will require a steady supply of stem cells, particularly human embryonic stem cells. Those stem cells are collected from developing human embryos created from eggs-or oocytes-harvested from the ovaries of female donors. Thus much of the promise of stem cells depends on women choosing to donate oocytes to the research effort. The oocyte donation process is not without risk, however. Donors are given doses of hormones to trigger the production of more eggs than would normally be produced, and this hormone treatment can have various side effects. Once the eggs have matured in the ovary, they must be retrieved via a surgical procedure that is typically performed under anesthesia, and both the surgery and the anesthesia carry their own risks. Furthermore, given the very personal nature of egg donation, the experience may carry psychological risks for some women as well. With this in mind, in 2006 the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine contracted with the National Academies to organize a workshop that would bring together experts from various areas to speak about the potential risks of oocyte donation and to summarize what is known and what needs to be known about this topic. The Committee on Assessing the Medical Risks of Human Oocyte Donation for Stem Cell Research was formed to plan the workshop, which was held in San Francisco on September 28, 2006. This report is a summary and synthesis of that workshop.

Book Vitamins and Hormones

Download or read book Vitamins and Hormones written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-03-07 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1943, Vitamins and Hormones is the longest-running serial published by Academic Press. In the early days of the Serial, the subjects of vitamins and hormones were quite distinct. The Editorial Board now reflects expertise in the field of hormone action, vitamin action, X-ray crystal structure, physiology, and enzyme mechanisms. Under the capable and qualified editorial leadership of Dr. Gerald Litwack, Vitamins and Hormones continues to publish cutting-edge reviews of interest to endocrinologists, biochemists, nutritionists, pharmacologists, cell biologists, and molecular biologists. Others interested in the structure and function of biologically active molecules like hormones and vitamins will, as always, turn to this series for comprehensive reviews by leading contributors to this and related disciplines. Vitamins are organic substances not naturally produced by the body that are necessary in trace amounts for normal physiologic and metabolic functioning. Hormones are biochemical substances produced in cells and tissues that cause a specific biological change or activity to occur elsewhere in the body Study of both vitamins and hormones is essential to our understanding of physiology
