Book HRT Solution rev edition

Download or read book HRT Solution rev edition written by John M Kells and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2003-10-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now revised and updated, the comprehensive program for restoring vitality, sexuality, and health using natural hormones—just the ones each individual woman needs, and just the amount she needs. The decision of whether or not to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause is perhaps more controversial—and more confusing—than ever before. The HRT Solution provides a balanced discussion of the issues and, most important, offers a choice that goes beyond "yes" or "no." The authors explain the shortcomings of the conventional, "cookie-cutter" approach to HRT, which gives women standardized amounts of synthetic hormone substitutes or animal-derived hormone products. Instead, they recommend a program designed to meet each woman's particular needs. Their approach emphasizes the importance of testing and ongoing monitoring to determine precisely which hormones a woman may want to supplement. The solution lies in the prescription of individualized doses of custom-made natural hormones—exact matches for the ones a woman's body produces. The HRT Solution makes it possible for each woman to maintain a hormonal balance that is optimal for her body and her well-being, without the unpleasant side effects and potential for long-term health problems associated with conventional HRT.

Book excerpt: A compelling, “fascinating” (Robert Cialdini) defense of hormone replacement therapy, exposing the faulty science behind its fall from prominence and giving women the evidence they need to make informed decisions about their health. Now fully revised and updated. "Estrogen Matters was my antidote to the misinformation surrounding menopause. This book should be the bible for every single person going through menopause.”―Naomi Watts For years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was the medically approved way to alleviate menopausal symptoms (ranging from hot flushes to brain fog) and reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, and osteoporosis. But when a large study by the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) announced, with national fanfare, that women taking HRT had an increased risk of breast cancer, women were scared off, and the treatment was abandoned. Now, Dr. Bluming, a medical oncologist, and Dr. Tavris, a social psychologist, reveal the true story of the WHI’s efforts to distort their data to exaggerate unsupported claims of estrogen’s harms. Important updates in this edition include: Evidence that demolishes the WHI’s claim that HRT causes breast cancer. A list of the WHI’s retractions of their original scare stories. Updated findings on estrogen’s benefits on heart, brain, bones, and longevity. A critical review of the alternative products and medications being marketed to treat symptoms of menopause. A sobering and revelatory read, Estrogen Matters sets the record straight on estrogen’s benefits, providing a light to guide women through this inevitable phase of life.

Book Women s Decisions and Decisional Conflict Regarding Long Term Hormone Replacement Therapy

Download or read book Women s Decisions and Decisional Conflict Regarding Long Term Hormone Replacement Therapy written by Elizabeth Wood and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long term preventive hormone replacement therapy (LTP-HRT) is attracting considerable attention for its potential in reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease and osteoporosis associated fractures in post-menopausal women. The study objectives were: (1) to describe women's decisions and decisional conflict regarding LTP-HRT after being presented with the evidence of benefits and risks and clarifying values; (2) to describe the difference between those who accept or decline LTP-HRT in terms of: (a) expectations of LTP-HRT benefits and risks, and (b) the importance women attach to the benefits and the risks; and (3) to describe the factors women identify as contributing to their decision to take or not take LTP-HRT or being unsure about taking LTP-HRT. The typical woman who participated in the study was 57 years of age; had some post secondary education; and was currently using HRT. Over half the women had at least one CHD risk factor and had a hysterectomy. Less than 15% of the respondents reported having osteoporosis or a first degree relative with breast cancer. Women's decisions to take LTP-HRT were distributed as follows: 56% yes; 26% no; and 18% unsure. Women who accepted or declined LTP-HRT did not have statistically significant differences in expectations of risk of CHD, osteoporosis, and breast cancer with and without hormone therapy. In contrast, women's importance ratings of LTP-HRT benefits and side effects did differ significantly between those accepting and declining LTP-HRT. The reasons most often identified by women who chose LTP-HRT were prevention of CHD and osteoporosis (61%) and relief of hot flashes (54%). Those who chose not to take LTP-HRT gave reasons such as dislike of taking pills (47%), and risk of cancer (11%). (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book The Estrogen Elixir

Download or read book The Estrogen Elixir written by Elizabeth Siegel Watkins and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-04-16 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first complete history of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), Elizabeth Siegel Watkins illuminates the complex and changing relationship between the medical treatment of menopause and cultural conceptions of aging. Describing the development, spread, and shifting role of HRT in America from the early twentieth century to the present, Watkins explores how the interplay between science and society shaped the dissemination and reception of HRT and how the medicalization—and subsequent efforts toward the demedicalization—of menopause and aging affected the role of estrogen as a medical therapy. Telling the story from multiple perspectives—physicians, pharmaceutical manufacturers, government regulators, feminist health activists, and the media, as well as women as patients and consumers—she reveals the striking parallels between estrogen’s history as a medical therapy and broad shifts in the role of medicine in an aging society. Today, information about HRT is almost always accompanied by a laundry list of health risks. While physicians and pharmaceutical companies have striven to develop the safest possible treatment for the symptoms of menopause and aging, many specialists question whether HRT should be prescribed at all. Drawing from a wide range of scholarly research, archival records, and interviews, The Estrogen Elixir provides valuable historical context for one of the most pressing debates in contemporary medicine.

Book excerpt: "Women approaching midlife are plagued with insomnia, fatigue, depression, forgetfulness, low libido, and a general sense of malaise. Yet no matter what they try, they are unable to find true (or lasting) relief. They are dismissed by doctor after doctor without a definitive diagnosis- told that their symptoms are either in their heads or just an expected part of the aging process. But Dr. Kathy Maupin knows that this isn't true. As one of the country's leading experts on hormonal balance- and as a woman who experienced these symptoms herself- Dr. Maupin has identified a debilitating and largely unknown health condition that is affecting millions of women: testosterone deficiency. In The Secret Female Hormone, Dr. Maupin and therapist Brett Newcomb bring vital information about testosterone to the general public for the first time as they share the latest research on testosterone replacement therapy for women and its effects. Speaking in clear and practical terms, they show readers how to find the right treatment plan for their individual needs." --
