At the heart of his story is the "Environmental Endocrine Hypothesis," the assertion that a class of chemicals called "endocrine disruptors" are interfering with the normal functioning of hormones in animals and humans. Book excerpt: *** OVER 85,000 COPIES SOLD *** Hormonal imbalances can occur at any age—before, during, or after menopause. The reasons for these imbalances vary widely, and can include heredity, environment, nutrition, and aging. While most hormone-related problems are associated with menopause, the fact is that fluctuating hormonal levels can also cause a variety of other conditions; and for some women, the effects can be truly debilitating. In this new and expanded edition of What You Must Know About Women’s Hormones, bestselling author Dr. Pamela Wartian Smith has provided a clear and concise guide to the treatments of hormonal irregularities without the health risks associated with standard hormone replacement therapy. This book is divided into three parts. Part I describes the body’s own hormones, looking at their functions and the different side effects that can occur if these hormones are not at optimal levels. Part II focuses on the most common problems that arise from hormonal imbalances, such as PMS, hot flashes, postpartum depression, and endometriosis. You will learn that even disorders that seemingly have nothing to do with hormones, such as heart disease and osteoporosis, can be affected by a hormonal imbalance. Lastly, Part III details hormone replacement therapy, focusing on the difference between natural and synthetic hormone treatments. It explains how you can have your hormonal levels measured, and provides examples of the various hormone replacement therapies available. In addition, there is now a helpful table on the various ways to treat insulin resistance, a key factor in creating hormone imbalance. Whether you are looking for help with menopausal symptoms or you simply want to enjoy vibrant health and well-being, this new edition of What You Must Know About Women’s Hormones can make a profound difference in the quality of your life.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For women approaching or in menopause, a revolutionary diet and holistic lifestyle program for easier weight loss, better sleep, diminished hot flashes, a clearer head, and a rejuvenated sex drive. “Hormone balance is within reach, and this is the definitive guide for reaching that goal.”—David Perlmutter, MD, author of Grain Brain As women approach menopause, many start to experience the physical and emotional indignities of hormonal fluctuation: metabolic stall and weight gain, hot flashes and night sweats, insomnia, memory loss or brain fog, irritability, low libido, and painful sex. Too often, doctors tell us that these discomforts are to be expected and that we will have to wait them out during “the change”; some of us even agree to be unnecessarily medicated. But Dr. Anna Cabeca’s research and experience with thousands of her patients show that there is a fast-acting and nonpharmaceutical way to dramatically and permanently alleviate these symptoms. The Hormone Fix introduces Dr. Cabeca’s unique Keto-Green protocol, a plan that pairs the hallmarks of ketogenic (low-carb/high fat) eating with diet and lifestyle changes that bring the body’s cellular pH to a healthy alkaline level. Book From Hysteria to Hormones

Download or read book From Hysteria to Hormones written by Amy Koerber and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Hysteria to Hormones, Amy Koerber examines the rhetorical activity that preceded the early twentieth-century emergence of the word hormone and the impact of this word on expert understandings of women’s health. Shortly after Ernest Henry Starling coined the term “hormone” in 1905, hormones began to provide a chemical explanation for bodily phenomena that were previously understood in terms of “wandering wombs,” humors, energies, and balance. In this study, Koerber posits that the discovery of hormones was not so much a revolution as an exigency that required old ways of thinking to be twisted, reshaped, and transformed to fit more scientific turn-of-the-century expectations of medical practices. She engages with texts from a wide array of medical and social scientific subdisciplines; with material from medical archives, including patient charts, handwritten notes, and photographs from the Salpêtrière Hospital, where Dr. Jean Charcot treated hundreds of hysteria patients in the late nineteenth century; and with current rhetorical theoretical approaches to the study of health and medicine. In doing so, Koerber shows that the boundary between older, nonscientific ways of understanding women’s bodies and newer, scientific understandings is much murkier than we might expect. A clarifying examination of how the term “hormones” preserves key concepts that have framed our understanding of women’s bodies from ancient times to the present, this innovative book illuminates the ways in which the words we use today to discuss female reproductive health aren’t nearly as scientifically accurate or socially progressive as believed. Scholars of rhetoric, gender studies, and women’s health will find Koerber’s work provocative and valuable.

Book The Hormone Decision

Download or read book The Hormone Decision written by Tara Parker-Pope and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2007-01-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the most pressing question on the minds of women at any stage of the menopausal transition: "Should I or shouldn't I take menopause hormones?" The answer is far from crystal clear. Hormone drugs are the most effective therapy for easing hot flashes and other common menopause symptoms. But their long-term effects have been the focus of intense scrutiny and debate. As the weekly consumer health columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Tara Parker-Pope has been an eyewitness to the growing controversy surrounding hormone therapy. Her understanding of menopause research, and her access to the experts behind it, has given her unique insight into the complex issues surrounding hormone use. In The Hormone Decision, Parker-Pope explores the scientific, political and social forces that have shaped current thinking on hormone therapy. And she takes you on a head to toe tour of how hormones affect every part of your body, including your brain, your breasts, your heart, your bones, your vagina, and even your skin. As you will discover, hormone therapy is not one-size-fits-all. It's as individual as your health status, family history and menopause experience. When you start hormone therapy and how long you use it are major factors in determining its health effects. While it may raise certain risks for some women, it actually may be protective for others. This is why you need an independent, objective resource like The Hormone Decision. It provides the context for you to understand the research, ask intelligent questions, and ultimately choose whether or not hormone therapy is right for you.

Book Hysterical

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eleanor Morgan
  • Publisher : Seal Press
  • Release : 2019-08-27
  • ISBN : 1580058434
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Hysterical written by Eleanor Morgan and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting exploration of the link between women's hormones and mental health--with advice, personal testimony, facts, and research creating a portrait of how hormones contribute to make up the "female animal" Hysterical seeks to explore the connections between hormones and health, particularly in the frequent mood changes and mental health issues women typically chalk up to the influence of hormones. Journalist Eleanor Morgan investigates the relationship between biochemistry, our bodies, and our mental health, including the context for this discussion: the historic culture of silence around women's bodies. As Morgan argues, we've gotten better at talking about mental health, but we still shy away from discussing periods, miscarriage, endometriosis, and menopause. That results in a lack of vital understanding for women, particularly as those processes are inextricably connected to our mental health; by exploring women's bodies in conjunction with our minds, Morgan urges for new thinking about our health. Examining the mythology of female hormones, the ways that culture shapes our perceptions of women's bodies, and the latest medical research, Hysterical skillfully paints a portrait of the modern landscape of women and health--and shows us how to navigate stigma and misinformation.
