Book Endocrine Abnormalities and Renal Complications

Download or read book Endocrine Abnormalities and Renal Complications written by Anil Kumar Pasupulati and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertebrate kidneys play a vital role in regulating body homeostasis, in addition to being instrumental in preventing large blood molecules from filtering out into the urine. Several endocrine factors have an influential role in renal health. Hormones are necessary for the normal health of the kidney and altered levels of them are harmful to glomerular health, manifesting in chronic kidney disease and proteinuria. Recent evidence attributes novel roles to several endocrine mediators in renal biology, including growth hormone, thyroxine, and glucocorticoids. In recent times, researchers have demonstrated altered levels of these hormones elicit a decline in renal function by afflicting several cellular and molecular manifestations in specific renal cells. More research is needed to better understand this connection and its potential translational implications.

Download or read book Uremic Toxins written by Severin Ringoir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contains the Proceedings of a two day Symposium on Uremic Toxins organized at the University of Ghent in Belgium. A series of guest lectures, free communications and posters have been presented. An international audience of 163 scientists from 16 nationalities listened to and discussed extensively a spectrum of topics brought forward by colleagues and researchers who worked for many years in the field of Uremic Toxins. There is a striking contrast between all the new dialysis strategies available in the work to "clean" the uremic patients and the almost non-progression of our knowledge on uremic toxins in the past decade. In this sense the symposium was felt by all participants as a new start for the research in the biochemical field of the definition of uremia. If the present volume would stimulate new work in this field in order to define uremia, or identify the uremic toxins, the purpose of the organizers would be maximally fulfilled.

Download or read book Chronic Renal Failure written by G.R. Catto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last two decades, the topic of chronic renal failure has been dominated by discussions on dialysis and transplantation. As facilities for treating patients with end-stage renal failure have become more readily available, at least in Europe and North America, attention has once again been drawn to conservative measures which may improve both the overall prognosis and the quality of life of patients with renal impairment. Although severe renal failure may be progressive and many patients will ultimately require some form of renal replacement therapy, it is now widely appreciated that distressing symptoms can often be ameliorated by judicious medical treatment. Children as well as, and perhaps to a greater extent than, adults may benefit from such therapy. This volume examines relevant trends in the conservative man agement of both adults and children with chronic renal failure. Each chapter has been written by recognized experts and provides infor mation of clinical relevance for the average clinician. As the overall prognosis for patients with end-stage renal failure improves it is clear the management of patients with relatively stable chronic renal failure is an important topic not only for nephrologists but for all practising clinicians.

Book excerpt: Advances in itch research have elucidated differences between itch and pain but have also blurred the distinction between them. There is a long debate about how somatic sensations including touch, pain, itch, and temperature sensitivity are encoded by the nervous system. Research suggests that each sensory modality is processed along a fixed, direct-line communication system from the skin to the brain. Itch: Mechanisms and Treatment presents a timely update on all aspects of itch research and the clinical treatment of itch that accompanies many dermatological conditions including psoriasis, neuropathic itch, cutaneous t-cells lymphomas, and systemic diseases such as kidney and liver disease and cancer. Composed of contributions from distinguished researchers around the world, the book explores topics such as: Neuropathic itch Peripheral neuronal mechanism of itch The role of PAR-2 in neuroimmune communication and itch Mrgprs as itch receptors The role of interleukin-31 and oncostatin M in itch and neuroimmune communication Spinal coding of itch and pain Spinal microcircuits and the regulation of itch Examining new findings on cellular and molecular mechanisms, the book is a compendium of the most current research on itch, its prevalence in society, and the problems associated with treatment.

A large number of patients live longer than 20 years after commencement of the therapy, facts which have established the value of haemodialysis as a therapeutic method with no theoretical limitation on the length of survival it offers to patients. Given the major theoretical advances in both the technology and medical knowledge since its early stages, the text presents an up-to-date coverage of all its technical and clinical aspects.
