Book excerpt: “Journey to a New Life” in a nutshell: Easy life Disaster Bankruptcy Disaster New life? This is a story that starts as factual, describing in some detail how I lost nearly £1,000,000 of other people’s money and £750,000 of my own because of a change in the law, which my expensive solicitors didn’t tell me about! The fat cats of both the legal and accountancy profession then milked the situation, and as far as I know, investors got nothing back, despite the intervention of the Financial Services Authority. I say despite it all, it was probably because of their initial intervention the investors lost everything! Anyway, the story then descends into adventurous half-truths, stretched imagination, and a huge amount of wishful thinking. Some names have been changed to protect the innocent, some haven’t, and others are by inference only. Some place names, distances, and locations have been slightly modified to suit the second part of the story, but you can actually follow my journey across part of France either by bike, car, or if you so wished, on foot, and as you pass, certain features will be recognizable.

Book Habitats and Biota of the Gulf of Mexico Before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Download or read book Habitats and Biota of the Gulf of Mexico Before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill written by C. Herb Ward and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 891 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. The Gulf of Mexico is an open and dynamic marine ecosystem rich in natural resources but heavily impacted by human activities, including agricultural, industrial, commercial and coastal development. The Gulf of Mexico has been continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons for millions of years from natural oil and gas seeps on the sea floor, and more recently from oil drilling and production activities located in the water near and far from shore. Major accidental oil spills in the Gulf are infrequent; two of the most significant include the Ixtoc I blowout in the Bay of Campeche in 1979 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. Unfortunately, baseline assessments of the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before these spills either were not available, or the data had not been systematically compiled in a way that would help scientists assess the potential short-term and long-term effects of such events. This 2-volume series compiles and summarizes thousands of data sets showing the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Volume 2 covers historical data on commercial and recreational fisheries, with an analysis of marketing trends and drivers; ecology, populations and risks to birds, sea turtles and marine mammals in the Gulf; and diseases and mortalities of fish and other animals that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico.

Book Early Miocene Paleobiology in Patagonia

Download or read book Early Miocene Paleobiology in Patagonia written by Sergio F. Vizcaíno and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal exposures of the Santa Cruz Formation in southern Patagonia have been a fertile ground for recovery of Early Miocene vertebrates for more than 100 years. This volume presents a comprehensive compilation of important mammalian groups which continue to thrive today. It includes the most recent fossil finds as well as important new interpretations based on ten years of fieldwork by the authors. A key focus is placed on the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment during the time of deposition in the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO) between twenty and fifteen million years ago. The authors present the first reconstruction of what climatic conditions were like and present important new evidence of the geochronological age, habits and community structures of fossil bird and mammal species. Academic researchers and graduate students in paleontology, paleobiology, paleoecology, stratigraphy, climatology and geochronology will find this a valuable source of information about this fascinating geological formation.
