Book Horace and the Haggis Hunter

Download or read book Horace and the Haggis Hunter written by Sally Magnusson and published by Horace the Haggis. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace the Haggis, homeless and hunted, finds refuge among the animals of Acre Valley. But Angus McPhee, chief of the haggis-hunters, and his deadly cat are out to trap him. Can a flower-eating fox, a loyal mouse, a gossipy rook, two magpies on Twitter, and the bumbling efforts of the Mole Patrol help Horace escape before he is caught in a net and boiled for dinner? With his bagpipes (which, to the alarm of his new friends, he has just begun learning), his trusty hair-gel, and his fondness for eating heather, Horace will find a place in any child's heart. Friendly, timid, a little bit greedy, and ever so slightly vain, he spends much of the Battle of Nettle Farm with his eyes tight shut, as he and his friends try to escape the clutches of Angus McPhee and The Cat With No Name. "Horace the Haggis" gives children a world of fun, adventure, secrets, and unforgettable characters and is both comfortingly timeless and engagingly modern. And in Acre Valley the exploits of Horace and his friends will have you laughing one minute and on the edge of your seat the next. Illustrated by the author's husband and based on ideas from their own children, this is a family book for other families to read together and enjoy.

Download or read book Life of Pee written by Sally Magnusson and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A frank and humorous encyclopedic history of the forgotten life of urine and its many uses in society. Alchemists sought gold in it. David Bowie refrigerated it to ward off evil. In the trenches of Ypres soldiers used it as a gas mask, whereas modern-day terrorists add it to home-made explosives. All the Fullers, Tuckers and Walkers in the phonebook owe their names to it, and in 1969 four bags for storing it were left on the surface of the moon. Bought and sold, traded and transported, even carried to work in jugs, urine has made bread rise, beer foam and given us gunpowder, stained glass, Robin Hood’s tights, and Vermeer’s Girl With A Pearl Earring. And we do produce an awful lot of it. Humans alone make almost enough to replace the entire contents of Loch Lomond every year. Add the incalculable volume contributed by the rest of the animal kingdom and it might soon displace a small ocean. No wonder it gets everywhere. In Life of Pee Sally Magnusson unveils the secret history of civilization’s most unsavory and unsung hero, and discovers how our urine footprint is just as indelible as our carbon one.

Book Where Memories Go

Download or read book Where Memories Go written by Sally Magnusson and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A fine book' The Sunday Times 'Powerful' Guardian 'Wonderful' The Telegraph 'Moving, funny, warm' Mail on Sunday 'Brave, compassionate, tender and honest' Metro 'This book began as an attempt to hold on to my witty, storytelling mother with the one thing I had to hand. Words. Then, as the enormity of the social crisis my family was part of began to dawn, I wrote with the thought that other forgotten lives might be nudged into the light along with hers. Dementia is one of the greatest social, medical, economic, scientific, philosophical and moral challenges of our times. I am a reporter. It became the biggest story of my life.' Sally Magnusson Sad and funny, wise and honest, Where Memories Go is a deeply intimate account of insidious losses and unexpected joys in the terrible face of dementia, and a call to arms that challenges us all to think differently about how we care for our loved ones when they need us most. Regarded as one of the finest journalists of her generation, Mamie Baird Magnusson's whole life was a celebration of words - words that she fought to retain in the grip of a disease which is fast becoming the scourge of the 21st century. Married to writer and broadcaster Magnus Magnusson, they had five children of whom Sally is the eldest. As well as chronicling the anguish, the frustrations and the unexpected laughs and joys that she and her sisters experienced while accompanying their beloved mother on the long dementia road for eight years until her death in 2012, Sally Magnusson seeks understanding from a range of experts and asks penetrating questions about how we treat older people, how we can face one of the greatest social, medical, economic and moral challenges of our times, and what it means to be human.

Book excerpt: The histories of nations are never as simple as their legends suggest. George Rosie has been driven by a powerful curiosity about the country he has lived in since he was an Edinburgh schoolboy fifty years ago. This lively mindset has established him as one of Scotland's most inquiring writers and journalists, in print and on television. In Curious Scotland, he unearths and illuminates many neglected aspects of Scottish history in a rich collection of episodes that ranges from the Picts to the Indian tribes of North America. What became of the sons of Robert Burns? How did Scotland influence the Ku Klux Klan? Why was a Hebridean island deliberately infested with anthrax? The answers lie in a book which reveals the complexity, contradictions and sheer fascination of Scotland's long and strange story.

Book The Travels of Reverend lafur Egilsson

Download or read book The Travels of Reverend lafur Egilsson written by Ólafur Egilsson and published by Catholic University of America Press + ORM . This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seventeenth-century minister tells his story of abduction by pirates, and a solo journey from Algiers to Copenhagen, in this remarkable historical text. In summer 1627, Barbary corsairs raided Iceland, killing dozens and abducting almost four hundred people to sell into slavery in Algiers. Among those taken was Lutheran minister Olafur Egilsson. Reverend Olafur—born in the same year as William Shakespeare and Galileo Galilei—wrote The Travels to chronicle his experiences both as a captive and as a traveler across Europe as he journeyed alone from Algiers to Copenhagen in an attempt to raise funds to ransom the Icelandic captives that remained behind. He was a keen observer, and the narrative is filled with a wealth of detail―social, political, economic, religious―about both the Maghreb and Europe. It is also a moving story on the human level: We witness a man enduring great personal tragedy and struggling to reconcile such calamity with his understanding of God. The Travels is the first-ever English translation of the Icelandic text. Until now, the corsair raid on Iceland has remained largely unknown in the English-speaking world. To give a clearer sense of the extraordinary events connected with that raid, this edition of The Travels includes not only Reverend Olafur’s first-person narrative but also a collection of contemporary letters describing both the events of the raid itself and the conditions under which the enslaved Icelanders lived. Also included are appendices containing background information on the cities of Algiers and Salé in the seventeenth century, on Iceland in the seventeenth century, on the manuscripts accessed for the translation, and on the book’s early modern European context.

Book The Flying Scotsman

Download or read book The Flying Scotsman written by Sally Magnusson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Liddell is famous for being the man who would not compromise his religious principles and refused to compete in the Olympics on a Sunday - despite the fact that he was the red hot favourite for the gold. Instead, he entered a different event that was not being competed on the Sabbath...and won a gold anyway. One of Scotland's finest athletes, Liddell was feted throughout the United Kingdom. At the height of his fame, however, he slipped quietly out of the limelight to become a missionary in China, where he later came to an unpleasant end in a Japanese internment camp. Eric Liddell's remarkable story was the subject of the smash 1982 film "Chariots of Fire."
