Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horace Blake AS he came in she was standing by a desk on which lay a mass of proofs which she was pinning together, giving each chapter a brass fastener to itself with a firm pressure Of the large, admirable hands. Green had just shut the door Of the room in which he had been interviewing her husband, and She looked up at him with a grave, friendly expression. It was good Of you to let me see him, Mrs. Blake, he said, he is in Splendid form; can he be always as bright as this? Not always. Her voice was not musical, but it had a force in it that was pleasant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horace Vernon, or Life in the West, Vol. 1 of 3 Oh, my lord, said Mr. Robinson, humbly, do not mention so tri ing a service. I acted only as my conscience dictated, when I informed your lordship of the plot against you; and if I lost my situation, I have been placed by your lordship's kindness in a higher position in my profession than I ever aspired to. But, I pray you, my lord, do not speak further, for you have already over-exerted yourself. At this moment Gibson entered, and approached his master's bed-side. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roland Blake Blake's first care was to make two or three copies of the little map, and then to fix on his memory the three names given. He had noticed that they were numbered 55, 56, 57; and although Weston had neglected to state this, his successor easily concluded that these numbers were meant to be used in some way to identify the people with whom he was to confer. He had already made himself as familiar with the country as our very poor maps allowed, and for the lesser details felt that he must trust to his scouts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of William Blake: Together With a Life A certain number of letters from Blake's friends and acquaintances have been added to the collection, wherever they have seemed to give it greater coherence, or to shed new light upon his life and character; and for this purpose extracts have often been sufficient. The notes are intended partly to clear up any allusions to events or persons which might present difficulties to the reader, and partly to connect the letters with Blake's other writings, and to explain the ideas which they embody in reference to the whole of his work. They have been made as brief and serviceable as possible. The illustrations have been carefully chosen in regard to the text. Book Blake and Lucretius

Download or read book Blake and Lucretius written by Joshua Schouten de Jel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the way in which William Blake aligned his idiosyncratic concept of the Selfhood – the lens through which the despiritualised subject beholds the material world – with the atomistic materialism of the Epicurean school as it was transmitted through the first-century BC Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura. By addressing this philosophical debt, this study sets out a threefold re-evaluation of Blake’s work: to clarify the classical stream of Blake’s philosophical heritage through Lucretius; to return Blake to his historical moment, a thirty-year period from 1790 to 1820 which has been described as the second Lucretian moment in England; and to employ a new exegetical model for understanding the phenomenological parameters and epistemological frameworks of Blake’s mythopoeia. Accordingly, it is revealed that Blake was not only aware of classical atomistic cosmogony and sense-based epistemology but that he systematically mapped postlapsarian existence onto an Epicurean framework.
