Book Radiocarbon and the Chronologies of Ancient Egypt

Download or read book Radiocarbon and the Chronologies of Ancient Egypt written by C. Bronk Ramsey and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the findings of a major international project on the application of radiocarbon dating to the Egyptian historical chronology. Researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Cranfield in the UK, along with a team from France, Austria and Israel, radiocarbon dated more than 200 Egyptian objects made from plant material from museum collections from all over the world. The results comprise an accurate scientifically based chronology of the kings of ancient Egypt obtained by the radiocarbon analysis of short-lived plant remains. The research sheds light on one of the most important periods of Egyptian history documenting the various rulers of Egypt's Old, Middle and New Kingdoms. Despite Egypt's historical significance, in the past the dating of events has been a contentious undertaking with Egyptologists relying on various chronologies made up from archaeological and historical records. The radiocarbon dates nail down a chronology that is broadly in line with previous estimates. However, they do rule out some chronologies that have been put forward particularly in the Old Kingdom, which is shown to be older than some scholars thought. The research has implications for the whole region because the Egyptian chronology anchors the timing of historical events in neighbouring areas tied to the reign of particular Egyptian kings. The results will allow for more historical comparisons to be made in countries like Libya and Sudan, which have conducted radiocarbon dating techniques on places of archaeological interest in the past.

Book excerpt: "Horae Aegyptiacae" is a fascinating exploration of Egyptian chronology written by R. S. Poole and first published in 1850. It looks at the ancient Egyptian's conception of time and the seasons as extrapolated from archaeological ruins, as well as providing a detailed history of the first nineteen Egyptian dynasties. This book is highly recommended for those with an interest in ancient Egypt and it is not to be missed by collectors of allied literature. Contents include: "The Months and Years, Properly so Called," "The Three Seasons of the Year," "The Tropical Year," "The Vague Year," "Its Antiquity," "The Names of the Months in Hieroglyphics," "The Earliest Known Mention of the Vague Year, in a Hieroglyphic Inscription," "Names of the Months in the Timrs of the Ptolemies and Caesars, and in the Present Day," etc. Reginald Stuart Poole (1832 - 1895) was an English numismatist, archaeologist, and orientalist whose best work is arguably his contributions to Encyclopaedia Britannica on the subjects of on Egypt, Hieroglyphics and Numismatics. He also worked on "Smith's Dictionary of the Bible," and was "Keeper of Coins" at the British Museum. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. Book Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes 1419 1372 BCE

Download or read book Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes 1419 1372 BCE written by Melinda K. Hartwig and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes, 1419-1372 BCE examines the style, iconography, and symbolism of painting in all extant private Theban tomb chapels decorated during the reigns of Thutmose IV and Amenhotep III. The book studies the ways in which pictorial imagery functioned on behalf of the dead in the afterlife, presented their identity to the living, and revealed underlying religious developments with important societal implications. Various aspects of the pre-Amarna Theban tomb are explored, from the tomb's purpose as a creative and commemorative vehicle for the deceased to the placement and functional properties of its imagery. The book also discusses the different styles of painting in the chapels of state and religious officials and how these styles reveal workshop organization and "patronage" practices in Thebes. The majority of the book is dedicated to the iconography of the functioning image in the tomb chapel, its reception, and its purpose as a bridge between what was represented and what was signified, between the mundane and the sacred, and between the living and the dead. Particular attention is paid to the iconography on the "western" back walls of the transverse hall in T-shaped tomb chapels, walls that held aesthetic, cultic, and symbolic significance to the ancient Egyptians. On these walls as well as the northern or southern long wall in rectangular tomb chapels, iconography and text commemorated the deceased's personal and professional identity, projected this identity into the hereafter, and contained key components for the tomb owner's rebirth. The eternal well-being of the deceased was secured through the iconography of gift giving that also mirrored religious trends that permeated society. Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes, 1419-1372 BCE addresses Theban tomb painting and its underlying creative and commemorative properties as a medium of regeneration, preservation, and display on behalf of the tomb owner and the world of which he was a part.
