Book excerpt: A brilliant, emotionally wrenching novel from the Booker Prize winner and bestselling author of Atonement about a leading High Court judge who must resolve an urgent case—as well as her crumbling marriage. Fiona Maye is a leading High Court judge who presides over cases in the family division. She is renowned for her fierce intelligence, exactitude, and sensitivity. But her professional success belies private sorrow and domestic strife. There is the lingering regret of her childlessness, and now her marriage of thirty years is in crisis. At the same time, she is called on to try an urgent case: Adam, a beautiful seventeen-year-old boy, is refusing for religious reasons the medical treatment that could save his life, and his devout parents echo his wishes. Time is running out. Should the secular court overrule sincerely expressed faith? In the course of reaching a decision, Fiona visits Adam in the hospital—an encounter that stirs long-buried feelings in her and powerful new emotions in the boy. Her judgment has momentous consequences for them both. Don’t miss Ian McEwan’s new novel, Lessons.

Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • A “vivid and devastating” (The New York Times) portrait of an indomitable girl—from acclaimed journalist Andrea Elliott “From its first indelible pages to its rich and startling conclusion, Invisible Child had me, by turns, stricken, inspired, outraged, illuminated, in tears, and hungering for reimmersion in its Dickensian depths.”—Ayad Akhtar, author of Homeland Elegies ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Atlantic, The New York Times Book Review, Time, NPR, Library Journal In Invisible Child, Pulitzer Prize winner Andrea Elliott follows eight dramatic years in the life of Dasani, a girl whose imagination is as soaring as the skyscrapers near her Brooklyn shelter. In this sweeping narrative, Elliott weaves the story of Dasani’s childhood with the history of her ancestors, tracing their passage from slavery to the Great Migration north. As Dasani comes of age, New York City’s homeless crisis has exploded, deepening the chasm between rich and poor. She must guide her siblings through a world riddled by hunger, violence, racism, drug addiction, and the threat of foster care. Out on the street, Dasani becomes a fierce fighter “to protect those who I love.” When she finally escapes city life to enroll in a boarding school, she faces an impossible question: What if leaving poverty means abandoning your family, and yourself? A work of luminous and riveting prose, Elliott’s Invisible Child reads like a page-turning novel. It is an astonishing story about the power of resilience, the importance of family and the cost of inequality—told through the crucible of one remarkable girl. Winner of the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize • Finalist for the Bernstein Award and the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award

This book was released on 2004 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report examines the Children Bill as introduced into the Commons in July 2004 (HCB 144, ISBN 0215704479), following Lords amendments. In particular, the report focuses on the parts of the Bill relating to: the creation of the post of Children's Commissioner for England; strengthening the legal framework of co-operation between agencies delivering children's services; as well as clause 49 of the Bill on the corporal punishment of children and the restriction of the defence of 'reasonable chastisement', in light of the UK's obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the European Convention on Human Rights. Conclusions reached include i) support for the creation of an independent rights-based office of Children's Commissioner; and ii) that the continuing availability of the defence of reasonable chastisement is incompatible with the UK's obligations under the UN Convention and other international agreements.

Book Horace s Hope Friedman s Folly

Download or read book Horace s Hope Friedman s Folly written by Curtis J. Cardine and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace's Hope, Friedman's Folly explains the forces behind the current efforts to privatize education. It also works to debunk the idea that public education should be based on a capitalistic model of action that places education of our youth into the hands of corporations. It does this by presenting the original 6 principles of public education as espoused by Horace Mann, which is the basis of most state legislation concerning the creation of public schools. Citizens may not obtain both ignorance and freedom. The public should pay for, control, and maintain education. Children of different financial ladders should get the same education. The education that is taught must be nonsectarian (nonreligious). The education taught must use tenets of a free society. This education should be taught by professionally trained teachers. These principles are contrasted with the economic model of education promoted and theorized by economist Milton Friedman. A model that is re-segregating our children by race and creed rather than preparing them for life as a member of our democratic republic.

Book Medical Decision Making on Behalf of Young Children

Download or read book Medical Decision Making on Behalf of Young Children written by Imogen Goold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans cases, a wide-ranging international conversation was started regarding alternative thresholds for intervention and the different balances that can be made in weighing up the rights and interests of the child, the parent's rights and responsibilities and the role of medical professionals and the courts. This collection provides a comparative perspective on these issues by bringing together analysis from a range of jurisdictions across Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. Contextualising the differences and similarities, and drawing out the cultural and social values that inform the approach in different countries, this volume is highly valuable to scholars across jurisdictions, not only to inform their own local debate on how best to navigate such cases, but also to foster inter-jurisdictional debate on the issues. The book brings together commentators from the fields of law, medical ethics, and clinical medicine across the world, actively drawing on the view from the clinic as well as philosophical, legal and sociological perspectives on the crucial question of who should decide about the fate of a child suffering from a serious illness. In doing so, the collection offers comprehensive treatment of the key questions around whether the current best interests approach is still appropriate, and if not, what the alternatives are. It engages head-on with the concerns seen in both the academic and popular literature that there is a need to reconsider the orthodoxy in this area.
