Book Hoosiers and Scrubby Dutch Second Edition St Louis s South Side

Download or read book Hoosiers and Scrubby Dutch Second Edition St Louis s South Side written by Jim Merkel and published by Reedy Press LLC. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the South Side, there lived a tactless TV guy who had a way of getting tossed out of everything on camera, from the old VP Fair to Bill Clinton’s 1996 local re-election victory party. On the South Side, there dwelt a collector of ancient vacuum cleaners, none of which worked when he demonstrated them before millions of guffawing viewers watching on national television. And on the South Side, a beer baron tried to fight off Prohibition with a high-class, three-sided beer hall. It’s all in the second edition of Hoosiers and Scrubby Dutch: St. Louis’s South Side. The first edition captured the essence of the South St. Louis, with its tales of women scrubbing steps ever Saturday, the yummy brain sandwich, and a nationally known gospel performer who ran a furniture store in the Cherokee neighborhood. These stories, along with the new ones that fill the second edition, convey what gives a truly unique place its rough but charming personality. The result—Holy Hoosiers!—is an edition that’s even better than the first!

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book A Hoosier s Journey

Download or read book A Hoosier s Journey written by Frank P. Jozsa (Jr.) and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1941, I was born in Terre Haute, Indiana. I completed elementary and secondary schools there and then in 1963 graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Indiana State College. After serving as a logistics officer for five years in the military, I worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan, and later for Indiana National Bank in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the 1970s, I earned master of business administration, master of science, and doctorate of philosophy degrees, and since the late 1970s, I have taught classes in economics, statistics, and business administration to undergraduate and graduate students at various American colleges and universities. Besides teaching, I have also authored articles and books about the business, economics, and operations of leagues and their franchises in professional team sports. For activities, I became a reader of Advanced Placement examinations, an investor, and a distance runner. Being a competitive and dedicated athlete, I played varsity baseball and basketball while in high school and college, and performed as an all-star catcher and pitcher in Little League and on championship teams in Babe Ruth and Connie Mack Leagues. At a baseball tryout camp for major league prospects held in Columbus, Ohio, I tried but unfortunately did not play well enough to sign a contract with a professional team. As a student, I usually earned good to excellent grades in many subjects and, in fact, was salutatorian of my class at Gerstmeyer High School. Then I graduated with an accounting degree at Indiana State College (now University), master's degrees at two universities, and a PhD in economics at Georgia State University. To achieve academically at these schools, I disciplined myself to attend lectures, complete all assignments, conscientiously study my notes and textbooks, and maximize scores on examinations and class projects. Indeed, my accomplishments as a student in high school and colleges and universities led to a career in higher education. Between the late 1970s and 2007, I was a teacher and author who taught several types of economics and business administration courses to undergraduate and graduate students at accredited schools in Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. In addition, I was a classroom instructor with the University of Maryland in Germany. The articles I wrote appeared in journals, magazines, and newspapers while my books analyzed the business, economics, finance, and operations of leagues and teams in professional baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey, and soccer. Besides these experiences, I was a captain in the United States Air Force and stationed for one year in South Vietnam. Furthermore, I trained as a long-distance runner, won many age-group awards, and competed in five marathons, including races in Boston and New York City. After 35 years of fulltime teaching, I retired from Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, North Carolina. I currently live in Tega Cay, South Carolina.

Book The Hoosier Mama Book of Pie

Download or read book The Hoosier Mama Book of Pie written by Paula Haney and published by Agate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a delicious pie has never been easier with this extensive cookbook from the popular Chicago bakery. When Paula Haney first opened the Hoosier Mama Pie Company on March 14, 2009 (Pi day, appropriately enough), she worried whether her new business could survive by specializing in just one thing. But with a line around the block, Paula realized she had a more immediate problem: had she made enough pie? The shop closed early that day, but it has been churning out plenty of the Chicago’s most delectable pies ever since. Specializing in hand-made, artisanal pies that only use locally sourced and in-season ingredients, Hoosier Mama Pie Company has become a local favorite and a national destination gaining praise from Bon Appetit, the Food Network, and Food & Wine as one of the top pie shops in the country. Now, The Hoosier Mama Book of Pie delivers all the sumptuous secrets of buttery crusts, fruity fillings, creams and custards, chess pies, over-the-top pies, and even the stout and hearty savory pie. The practically oriented, easy-going, and accessible style of this book will help bakers both new and old make the perfect pie for every occasion. On top of all of this, The Hoosier Mama Book of Pie also includes tips on technique, fascinating historical anecdotes, and an emphasis on special seasonal recipes, as well as quiches, hand pies, and scones. This beautifully photographed and designed book has the classic retro feel of the mid-20th century golden age of pie, and all the warmth and personality of the Hoosier Mama Pie Co.’s cozy Chicago storefront. The focus on using local produce and employing the farm-to-table philosophy gives the book a contemporary twist, helping home bakers make the freshest, most delicious pies imaginable. Now readers can take a little piece of the Hoosier Mama Pie Company anywhere they go. Praise for the Hoosier Mama Book of Pie “Paula Haney . . . just put out a massive cookbook with her recipes . . . and it’s something very special. The almost-400-page tome details Hoosier Mama’s opening and development, as well as Haney’s recipes for everything from crust to biscuits to custard fillings. The photos make everything look delicious and, to the above-average baker, everything seems relatively easy to execute.” —Marah Eakin, The AV Club “Everything you could possibly want to know about proper pie making is covered . . . No facet of the process is too humble for discussion; the merits of salt in the crust is given as much thought as the best way to combine butter and flour. If you’ve ever wanted to learn the right way to crimp a pie, or how to make lattice work actually work, this is the book for you.” —Serious Eats, naming Hoosier Mama a top dessert cookbook of 2013

Book Hoosieritis

Download or read book Hoosieritis written by Alden Studebaker and published by Author House. This book was released on 2009-05-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is everyone in Indiana afflicted with an incurable disease? Thats what author, Alden Studebaker, would have you believe in his book Hoosieritis: The Contagious Condition that is Indiana. A native son of Indiana, Studebaker takes the reader on an anecdotal, farcical journey through the Hoosier State pointing out the distinctive ways the enigmatic disease of Hoosieritis impacts the lives of Indiana residents. The book is often irreverent, poking fun at Hoosier institutions, traditions, and peculiarities by presenting selected nonsensical facts about Indianas culture, history, people, and values. Its intent is to provoke robust conversations among Hoosiers about their home state, and spawn fresh, new observations of the concocted contagion. The book features twenty-four photos depicting Hoosieritis.

Book Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond

Download or read book Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond written by Janet G. McCabe and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is affecting Indiana's environment, threatening the way Hoosiers live and do business, and introducing new stresses to the state's economy, health, and infrastructure. And while scientists predict more days of extreme weather, increased public health risks, and reduced agricultural production in the coming years, Hoosiers still have a substantial say in determining their future environment. Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond confirms that Indiana can rise to meet this threat. The culmination of Indiana University's Prepared for Environmental Change Grand Challenge, this collection showcases how scientists, policymakers, communicators, and others are working hard to protect Indiana's economy and way of life by becoming more resilient. Researchers are creating new environmental resilience frameworks, building on years of existing research on how ecosystems can adapt, how social systems process threats in order to change, and how individuals themselves fit into the larger picture. In addition to presenting research results, Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond provides clear examples of how Hoosiers can make a difference by reducing risks, lessening the harmful impacts of climate change, and preparing for the unavoidable. What emerges in these pages is a hopeful, optimistic picture of how resilience is generalizable across systems--from forests to farms to cities--and how Hoosiers are mobilizing this resilience in the face of climate change.

Book A Hoosier s Journey

Download or read book A Hoosier s Journey written by Donald J. Almquist and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age 17, I went home from work and told my mother that I had received an appointment to study engineering at GMI. She said, “I didn’t know you wanted to be an engineer.” I said, “I do today!” I didn’t even know where GMI was located. On October 1, 1951, I entered Flint, Michigan to start my education with General Motors Institute. When Dad died, Mother was not employed. She said we were all going to stay together. The state would separate us if we couldn’t survive without Dad. I can still see her taking a knife and putting a slit in the top of that baking powder can, and we all contributed to it. We all put whatever we could earn in that can. During Mother’s last year, I would go over to see her, and she always wanted me to take something home. When I was checking her food supply, I found the baking powder can. I told her I would like to have it. She said there were a number of times she would look into it and see a dime, which meant she would have to be creative for supper. We never went hungry. She was one of my two most admired ladies. I married the other one. In March 1990, I flew into Moscow. All of the flights from out of the country came into Moscow in those days. After we landed, the intercom came on and asked for me. I remember this scared me. I wondered what was wrong. When I arrived in Tolyatti, two of my engineers met me and said, “Lets take a walk.” I thought this was strange since it was raining. They said you couldn’t talk in the rooms; they were bugged. They told about a session where they were planning the next phase of their work. The next morning the Russian engineers acted as if they had been in the meeting. Don Almquist has traveled the world doing business for GM. In this memoir starts with life on a small farm in Indiana, continues through his education and career at both Delco Remy and Delco Electronics Corporation. He talks of his personal life and career with stories from all over the world. He shares his beliefs on management and leadership and reflects on the last 90 years.
