Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oran, a Belgian painter, spends a weekend in London and meets Shani, a woman from the Negev Desert, near Beersheba. Almost a year later, Oran sets off to her agricultural community in Israel. The huge farm is similar to the ancient settlements. There he meets Hagar, Shani's sister, who has both Jewish and Egyptian roots and yearns for peace. The community is a stone's throw from the Gaza strip. Times are hard in the first decade of the 21st century. Oran turns out to be a member of an international secret association, and Hagar will try, in vain, to prevent him from going to Gaza to look for his Jewish roots. From cosmopolitan Brussels to the arid Negev Desert and from convivial Haifa to bustling Tel-Aviv, Hoopoe's Song is the gripping story about the right to happiness for all and a critical analysis of the manipulative tricks used by some international organizations.

  • Author : Eliza Zingesser
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2020-03-15
  • ISBN : 1501747649

Download or read book Stolen Song written by Eliza Zingesser and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stolen Song documents the act of cultural appropriation that created a founding moment for French literary history: the rescripting and domestication of troubadour song, a prestige corpus in the European sphere, as French. This book also documents the simultaneous creation of an alternative point of origin for French literary history—a body of faux-archaic Occitanizing songs. Most scholars would find the claim that troubadour poetry is the origin of French literature uncomplicated and uncontroversial. However, Stolen Song shows that the "Frenchness" of this tradition was invented, constructed, and confected by francophone medieval poets and compilers keen to devise their own literary history. Stolen Song makes a major contribution to medieval studies both by exposing this act of cultural appropriation as the origin of the French canon and by elaborating a new approach to questions of political and cultural identity. Eliza Zingesser shows that these questions, usually addressed on the level of narrative and theme, can also be fruitfully approached through formal, linguistic, and manuscript-oriented tools.

Book excerpt: Cairo, Mother of the World, embraces millions--but some of her children make their home in the streets, junked up and living in the shadows of wealth and among the monuments that the tourists flock to see. Mustafa, a former student radical who never believed in the slogans, sets out to tell their story, but he has to rely on the help of his American girlfriend, Marcia, who he is not sure he can trust. Meanwhile, his former leftist friends are now all either capitalists or Islamists. Alienated from a corrupt and corrupting society, Mustafa watches as the Cairo he cherishes crumbles around him. The men and women of the city struggle to find lovers worthy of their love and causes worthy of their sacrifice in a country that no longer deserves their loyalty. The children of the streets wait for the adults to take notice. And the foreigners can always leave.

Book The Ocean of the Soul

Download or read book The Ocean of the Soul written by Ritter and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ocean of the Soul is one of the great works of the German Orientalist Hellmut Ritter (1892-1971). It presents a comprehensive analysis of the writings of the mystical Persian poet Farīd al-Dīn ‘Aṭṭār who is thought to have died at an advanced age in April 1221 when the Mongols destroyed his home city of Nīshāpūr in the north-east of Iran. The book, which resulted from decades of investigation of literary and historical sources, was first published in 1955 and has since remained unsurpassed not only as the definitive study of ‘Aṭṭār's world of ideas but as an indispensable guide to understanding pre-modern Islamic literature in general. Quoting at length from ‘Aṭṭār and other Islamic sources, Ritter sketches an extraordinarily vivid portrait of the Islamic attitude toward life, characteristic developments in pious and ascetic circles, and, in conclusion, various dominant mystical currents of thought and feeling. Special attention is given to a wide range of views on love, love in all its manifestations, including homosexuality and the commonplace sūfī adoration of good-looking youths. Ritter's approach is throughout based onprecise philological interpretation of primary sources, several of which he has himself made available in critical editions.
