Book Through the Hoop 1979

Download or read book Through the Hoop 1979 written by Tema Okun and published by The Institute for Southern Studies. This book was released on with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Hoop To arc a jump shot through the orange rim . . . to tap in a rebound . . . putting the ball through the hoop represents a transcendent moment in basketball for player, team, and crowd. Such a moment exists in every sport. But to enjoy it, fans and athletes alike are often forced through other kinds of hoops. Sports can be violent, lonely, poetic, painful, uplifting. It can breed fitness or injury, sufficiency or dependence, pride or prejudice, friendship or hostility. When does the discipline of sport become dangerous obedience? When does self-mastery become self-aggrandizement? When does athletic activity cease to be empowering for the participants and fans to become an exercise of power over us? Answers to such questions are hard to find. Sports, unlike most topics previously addressed in special issues of Southern Exposure — labor, women, folk life, health, prisons — has never had a network of informed progressives working outside the established channels, posing critical questions, offering insightful direction for our thinking and doing. Trusted commentators and friends who know where they stand and why with regard to other central aspects of our culture shy away from giving serious thought to sport. As a result, many of us are left with personal confusions brought on by alternating experiences of frustration and fulfillment: How do we talk about a subject that on the one hand can be so easily criticized for abuses and on the other hand remains so compelling? How do we effectively criticize the sports establishment that manages ACC basketball or NFL football when we find ourselves glued to the set at playoff time?

Book Basketball Junkie

Download or read book Basketball Junkie written by Chris Herren and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his own words, former NBA and overseas pro Chris Herren tells how he nearly lost everything and everyone he loved, and how he found a way back to life. Powerful, honest, and dramatic, this remarkable memoir,Basketball Junkie, is harrowing in its descent, and heartening in its return. I was dead for thirty seconds. That's what the cop in Fall River told me. When the EMTs found me, there was a needle in my arm and a packet of heroin in the front seat. At basketball-crazy Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, junior guard Chris Herren carried his family's and the city's dreams on his skinny frame. His grandfather, father, and older brother had created their own sports legends in a declining city; he was the last, best hope for a career beyond the shuttered mills and factories. Herren was heavily recruited by major universities, chosen as a McDonald's All-American, featured in a Sports Illustrated cover story, and at just seventeen years old became the central figure in Fall River Dreams, an acclaimed book about the 1994 Durfee team's quest for the state championship. Leaving Fall River for college, Herren starred on Jerry Tarkanian's Fresno State Bulldogs team of talented misfits, which included future NBA players as well as future convicted felons. His gritty, tattooed, hip-hop persona drew the ire of rival fans and more national attention: Rolling Stone profiled him, 60 Minutes interviewed him, and the Denver Nuggets drafted him. When the Boston Celtics acquired his contract, he lived the dream of every Massachusetts kid—but off the court Herren was secretly crumbling, as his alcohol and drug use escalated and his life spiraled out of control. Twenty years later, Chris Herren was married to his high-school sweetheart, the father of three young children, and a heroin junkie. His basketball career was over, consumed by addictions; he had no job, no skills, and was a sadly familiar figure to those in Fall River who remembered him as a boy, now prowling the streets he once ruled, looking for a fix. One day, for a time he cannot remember, he would die.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wars ravage Iraq and Afghanistan. An earthquake devastates Haiti. The economy is in crisis and America is in the death grip of partisan politics. But what really, really gets you down? Your college basketball team loses a key game. It kind of makes a person wonder—first, of course, about his priorities, but then, inevitably, about the nature of such an obsession, one clearly shared with millions of sports fans spanning the United States. In a book that begins with one fan’s passion for a game, Andrew Malan Milward takes a deep dive into sports culture, team loyalty, and a shared sense of belonging—and what these have to do with character, home, and history. At the University of Kansas—where the inventor of the sport coached its first team—basketball is a religion, and Milward is a devoted follower with a faith that has grown despite time and distance. Jayhawker, his first venture into nonfiction, bears the marks of the accomplished storyteller. Sharply observed, deftly written, and often as dramatic as its subject, the book pairs personal memoir with cultural history to conduct us from the world of the athlete to the literary life, from competition to camaraderie, from the history of the game to the game as a reflection of American history at its darkest hour and in its shining moments. A journey through one man’s obsession with basketball, Jayhawker: On History, Home, and Basketball tells a quintessential American story.

Book Heaven is a Playground

Download or read book Heaven is a Playground written by Rick Telander and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, Rick Telander intended to spend a few days doing a magazine piece on the court wizards of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant. He ended up staying the entire summer, becoming part of the players' lives and eventually the coach of a loose aggregation known as the Subway Stars. Telander tells of everything he saw: the on-court flash, the off-court jargon, the late-night graffiti raids, the tireless efforts of one promoter-hustler-benefactor to get these kids a chance at a college education. He lets the kids speak for themselves, revealing their grand dreams and ambitions. But he never flinches from showing us how far their dreams are from reality. The roots of today's inner-city basketball can be traced to the world Telander presents in "Heaven is a Playground," the first book of its kind. Rick Telander is a senior writer for "Sports Illustrated" and the winner of the 1987 Notre Dame Club Award for Excellence in Sports Journalism.

Book Phil Jackson

Download or read book Phil Jackson written by Peter Richmond and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-12-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With eleven championship rings to his name, Phil Jackson is internationally recognized as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NBA. Known as a defensive disrupter and a master fouler during his early days as a New York Knick and later celebrated as the “Zen Master” for his inspirational tactics as a leader, Jackson has had a long and storied career marked by constant self-reflection and reinvention. This is the man who led Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls to six championships, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers to five; who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame; and who retired in 2011, an official legend—and the most sought-after free-agent coach in history. As befits a legend, Jackson has written several candid, insightful books about his life and career, but now one of America’s most respected sportswriters turns an unvarnished light on Jackson’s strange and remarkable journey, from his sheltered childhood and adolescence in Montana and North Dakota, through his years playing at Madison Square Garden, to his experiences coaching Jordan, Bryant, and more of the greatest players of our time. New York Times-bestselling author Peter Richmond has written a personal, definitive, revealing biography of a veritable sports genius, and an American classic.

Book excerpt: “In vibrant color and style, Hoops Muses tells the vital stories that celebrate the history and tradition of our game.” —Sue Bird, WNBA legend Hoops Muses is an homage to the game, bringing style and flair to all the details, moments, and people who have shaped the collective world of (women’s) hoops. Hoops Muses will take us through time – literally. We begin in the future, in 2072, on the night of the WNBA’s 75th Anniversary, as New York Liberty phenom Jacklyn Jones is paid a visit by one of basketball’s long-ago (wink, wink) greats. This unlikely duo then goes on a sweeping, roundtrip adventure through basketball history, starting at the very beginning: Springfield, 1891. As the years pass, they learn the roots of the game (think: the first-ever collegiate game between Stanford and Cal, where men scaled the walls for a peek inside, or, the legend of Chicago’s Club Store Co-Eds, the all-Black barnstorming squad of the 1930s). AND as the early 20th century morphs into modern times, they see the game grow, the milestones reached. On their journey, they learn about the teams and the women (along with a few men) who helped build the foundation on which The Future will be built: -Fort Shaw and the 1904 World Championship -Pat Summitt and the early years of the Lady Vols -Delta State, featuring Margaret Wade and Lusia Harris -Cheryl Miller and Hollywood’s USC Trojans -UConn-Tennessee and the “Sliding Doors” moment that sparked their rivalry Plus, they have front-row seats to a whole lot of quirky, blissful fandom, including … The Movies That Should Have Been WNBA Jam The Moments The Shots To be a (women’s) hooper is to be part of a long and proud tradition … but one not often celebrated in popular culture. Hoops Muses is here to change that.
