Book The Lake Trout of Twin Lakes Colorado

Download or read book The Lake Trout of Twin Lakes Colorado written by John R. Griest and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth, survival, reproduction, recruitment, and food habits of lake trout in Twin Lakes, Colo., were examined during 1974-1975 to document the status of the trout population prior to completion of a 200-megawatt pumped-storage hydroelectric powerplant being constructed on the lake. The powerplant will become operational in 1977, and data collected during this study will be compared to similar data collected during the post-construction period to determine the effect of plant operations of the trout population. Growth of lake trout in Twin Lakes in comparable to that of other lake trout fisheries in the Western United States, such as Lake Tahoe, Nev.-Calif., and Fish Lake, Utah, and is somewhat faster than most lakes located in Canada. Annual mortality was found to be near 50 percent, which compares with other lake trout fisheries of this type. Successful reproduction of lake trout was confirmed by the presence of age classes that had not been stocked. Approximately 90 percent of 4-year-old fish captured during the study were from natural reproduction. Lake trout reaching the legal size limit of 381 mm were usually 4-year-olds, with approximately 20 percent of the population reaching this size each year. Lake trout in Twin Lakes feed primarily on Mysis relicta. Chironomid larvae, white suckers, and rainbow trout are also eaten. Possible effects of powerplant operation on the lake trout population are outlined and discussed.

Book Trophic Ecology of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush in Flaming Gorge Reservoir Utah Wyoming

Download or read book Trophic Ecology of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush in Flaming Gorge Reservoir Utah Wyoming written by Thomas C. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush) are apex predators that were first introduced into Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Utah-Wyoming in 1979 and have been self-sustaining since 1989. However, our understanding of their trophic ecology and subsequent effects on other fish species within this reservoir is limited. I assessed feeding dynamics of Lake Trout through traditional diet analyses and stable isotope analyses of muscle and liver tissues, and compare these outputs to patterns of Lake Trout growth rates and size structure. By integrating Lake Trout feeding dynamics with population demographics, I infer potential impacts of Lake Trout predation on prey fish. Lake Trout consumed a wide breadth of prey items across their ontogeny, but consumed a higher proportion of fish as their length increased. Stable isotope analyses suggested a higher reliance on fish prey than was described by stomach content analysis; however, estimates of feeding dynamics were comparable across methods. Growth models suggest that Lake Trout exhibited two distinct growth trajectories which indicate a divergent foraging strategy among individuals. I conclude that Lake Trout predation could be an important driver of game and non-game fish populations. While more information is needed, results suggest current length class definitions used for Lake Trout harvest regulations may not reflect observed ecological breakpoints. Further research such as bioenergetics modeling and fishing related mortality estimates are needed to fully understand ecological dynamics of this apex predator within Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

Book Response of Non native Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush to 15 Years of Harvest in Yellowstone Lake Yellowstone National Park

Download or read book Response of Non native Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush to 15 Years of Harvest in Yellowstone Lake Yellowstone National Park written by John M. Syslo and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) threaten to extirpate native Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri) in the 34 000 ha Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park, USA. Suppression (and eventual eradication) of the lake trout population is deemed necessary for the conservation of Yellowstone cutthroat trout. A US National Park Service gill-netting program removed nearly 450 000 lake trout from Yellowstone Lake from 1995 through 2009. We examined temporal variation in individual growth, body condition, length and age at maturity, fecundity, mortality, and population models to assess the efficacy of the lake trout suppression program. Population metrics did not indicate overharvest despite more than a decade of fish removal. The current rate of population growth is positive; however, it is lower than it would be in the absence of lake trout suppression. Fishing effort needs to increase above observed levels to reduce population growth rate below replacement. Additionally, high sensitivity of population growth rate to reproductive vital rates indicates that increasing fishing mortality for sexually mature lake trout may increase the effectiveness of suppression. Lake trout suppression in Yellowstone Lake illustrates the complexities of trying to remove an apex predator to restore a relatively large remote lentic ecosystem with a simple fish assemblage.
