Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Joe Pickett series comes a thrilling collection of suspense stories about the Wyoming he knows so well—and the dark deeds and impulses that can be found there... C. J. Box has been hailed for his brilliant storytelling, with a style rich in character, suspense, and sense of place. That same brilliance is exemplified in the ten riveting stories—three of them never before published—that make up Shots Fired. In “One-Car Bridge,” one of four Joe Pickett stories, Pickett goes up against a just plain mean landowner, with disastrous results. In “Shots Fired,” his investigation into a radio call nearly ends up being the last thing he ever does. “Pirates of Yellowstone,” features two Eastern European tough guys who find out what it means to be strangers in a strange land, and in “Le Sauvage Noble,” the stranger is a Lakota in Paris who enjoys playing the noble savage for the French women—until he meets Sophie. Then he discovers what savage really means.... Shots Fired is proof once again why “Box is a force to be reckoned with” (The Providence Journal-Bulletin).

Book excerpt: From Benjamin Franklin's newspaper hoax that faked the death of his rival to Abbie HoffmanOCOs attempt to levitate the Pentagon, pranksters, hoaxers, and con artists have caused confusion, disorder, and laughter in Western society for centuries. Profiling the most notorious mischief makers from the 1600s to the present day, a Pranksters aexplores how OC pranksOCO are part of a long tradition of speaking truth to power and social critique. Invoking such historical and contemporary figures as P.T. Barnum, Jonathan Swift, WITCH, The Yes Men, and Stephen Colbert, Kembrew McLeod shows how staged spectacles that balance the serious and humorous can spark important public conversations. In some instances, tricksters have incited social change (and unfortunate prank blowback) by manipulating various forms of media, from newspapers to YouTube. For example, in the 1960s, self-proclaimed OC professional hoaxerOCO Alan Abel lampooned AmericaOCOs hypocritical sexual mores by using conservative rhetoric to fool the news media into covering a satirical organization that advocated clothing naked animals. In the 1990s, Sub Pop Records then-receptionist Megan Jasper satirized the commodification of alternative music culture by pranking thea New York Times ainto reporting on her fake lexicon of OC grunge speak.OCO Throughout this book, McLeod shows how pranks interrupt the daily flow of approved information and news, using humor to underscore larger, pointed truths. Written in an accessible, story-driven style, a Pranksters areveals how mischief makers have left their shocking, entertaining, and educational mark on modern political and social life."

Download or read book Desperate Situation written by Kyle Ripton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on actual events, Casey plots to murder her husband, a soldier, for more than insurance money with the help of family. Fighting for his life, Thomas battles the relentless hatred of not only a black widow woman, but also a hidden family of black widows. What other hidden secrets could be lye inside the belly of the beast? Action packed, this story, based on actual events will make it all too difficult to put this book down aside from turning your stomach upside down over its remarkable content. For generations, women have been depicted as a delicate flower, incapable of equaling a mans strong, secure, outer structure a womans desires. Fast forwarding into the modern age, the feminist movement have campaigned for reforms on issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, maternity leave, equal pay, women's suffrage, sexual harassment, and sexual violence, all of which fall under the label of feminism. Now pushing for financial, social and cultural inequalities, men are still being subjected to the already well-known power women have had and harnessed for centuries. Over these centuries women have still maintained their focus on women's reproductive rights. Short of what this project is all about. I am focusing this campaign on what effects a mans outer glass shell, broken repeatedly as a result of unseen, unheard, or ignored pleas for equivalent laws that dramatically effect what happens to the male during divorce, domestic violence, abandonment of the male figure, and affecting the very core of his inner soul. As times change, little do the laws or the acknowledgement of men who are now coming forward with their own stories of sexual, verbal, emotional, and in many cases physical abuse by women, who remain the innocent ones. At the present time we are in post-production of the full-feature film based off this novel. Published in 2012, I feel this would be another amazing speaking point to those around the world who choose a visual experience over reading.
