Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the bestselling The Patient and Making the Cut comes the compelling story of two doctors on the front line. When old friends Jack and Tom volunteer for the army medical corps, both men are unaware that their lives are about to change forever. Jack is a first-class vascular surgeon with a strong sense of duty to his country, and Tom a highly respected anaesthetist with a young child. Given 48 hours to deploy, they leave behind their comfortable lives – and the petty rivalries and mindless bureaucracy of the Victoria Hospital – for a war zone where their emotional and psychological strength will be tested to the limit. Who can they trust when even young children are potential suicide bombers, and insurgents could be within their very ranks? Will they both return? And if so, will they be able to take up their lives where they left off? Honour, Duty, Courage is the culmination of Mohamed Khadra’s countless interviews with doctors and nurses who have served in the Australian military. Their stories have been dramatised and identifying characteristics altered to maintain confidentiality, but their duty, their compassion and their honour have been preserved. The result is a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and leave you in awe of the heroism of our medical corps.

Book excerpt: John Whittenburg, born in 1880 in a covered wagon, went to work at age fourteen earning his own living. In 1904, at age twenty-four, he was hired by the Fort Worth, Texas fire department because of his ability to handle horses and the horse drawn fire wagon. His leadership qualities led to promotions. His integrity led to being highly respected by his peers and community. John retired in 1947, as Battalion Chief after 43 years of service. In 1972, he was again honored as the oldest living fireman at age ninty-two. The information from his original Chief's log, when he opened #12 fire station, along with family history, pictures and newspaper articles are woven together with fictitious dialogue. John's story takes place when the fire department had no formal training. The men learned as they fought the fires. Anyone interested in history, true stories, biographies or firefighters will enjoy reading Duty-Honor-Courage. Book Review Having known Mr. Whittenburg in my childhood, I was delighted to read this book about his life. All I knew then was that he was very tall, a fire chief, and loved little kids. It's been such a joy to read about his whole life, as well as to learn about the development of fire fighting science. Even as a youngster, I perceived that he was laid back, gentle and persuasive, traits that took him from a hopeless future of dirt farming to a fulfilling career, in which he taught by example and insightful explanation and inspired hundreds of individuals to be their best selves. There's always someone who trains and teaches the rest. Mr. Whittenburg's ability to put the science of fire fighting into a curriculum for others belies his fourth grade education. Thanks to Janie for bringing this story to us. - Marian Pearn

Book Choosing Courage

Download or read book Choosing Courage written by Peter Collier and published by Artisan Books. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What turns an ordinary person into a hero? What happens in the blink of an eye on a battlefield (or in any dangerous situation) to bring out true courage? The men and women who have been recognized by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation know the answers to these questions deep in their hearts. We learn of Jack Lucas, a thirteen-year-old who kept his real age a secret so he could fight in World War II—where he deliberately fell on a grenade to save his buddies during the Iwo Jima invasion—and Clint Romesha, who almost single-handedly prevented a remote U.S. Army outpost in Afghanistan from being taken over by the Taliban. Also included are civilians who have been honored by the Foundation for outstanding acts of bravery in crisis situations: for example, Jencie Fagan, a gym teacher who put herself in danger to disarm a troubled eighth grader before he could turn a gun on his classmates. Adding depth and context are illuminating sidebars throughout and essays on the combat experience and its aftermath: topics such as overcoming fear; a mother mourning her son; and “surviving hell” as a prisoner of war. Back matter includes a glossary and an index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These stories of military heroism, focusing on members of the Legion of Valor, offer a sweeping study of courage in service to America. Published in conjunction with the Legion of Valor of the United States of America, Courage in Combat shares the stories of military heroes from the Civil War onward. They are recipients of the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, and the Air Force Cross. Their awards are our nation’s highest military decorations, given only to one in twenty thousand combatants. Among them are sergeants and generals, as well as corpsmen, civilians, engineers, “grunts,” and paratroopers. There are men and women, a mess attendant, aviators, spies and POWs, a cavalry scout, candidates for sainthood, and a president of the United States. The stories of these brave individuals relate personal accounts of heroism, as well as reflections on combat and war. This book also includes a short history of the Legion of Valor, America’s oldest military service organization, and an extensive list of its members, past and present. Courage in Combat explores the concept of courage through the lives, thoughts, and actions of this elite group—most of whom would say, “I was just doing my job.”
