Book excerpt: First published in the Catalan language in Valencia in 1490, Tirant lo Blanc ("The White Tyrant") is a sweeping epic of chivalry and high adventure. With great precision and verve, Martorell narrates land and sea battles, duels, hunts, banquets, political maneuverings, and romantic conquests. Reviewing the first modern Spanish translation in 1969 (Franco had ruthlessly suppressed the Catalan language and literature), Mario Vargas Llosa hailed the epic's author as "the first of that lineage of God-supplanters—Fielding, Balzac, Dickens, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Joyce, Faulkner—who try to create in their novels an all-encompassing reality."

Book excerpt: Dan Moore joined the Marines to serve in Vietnam and contribute to the anticipated American victory over communism. After completing officer training and artillery school, he deployed as a forward observer with an infantry company. His letters home described day-to-day events and revealed a growing skepticism about the war. During the Battle of Hue City, Moore lost his assistant forward observer, soon followed by another close friend. Fighting to maintain equilibrium, he suppressed his critical views of the war, even after returning home to oversee Marine recruit training. His memoir unpacks his letters, his recollections of the war and 50 years of introspection.

Book You Shall Not Bow Down and Serve Them

Download or read book You Shall Not Bow Down and Serve Them written by Richard A. Horsley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic justice is the core of the biblical tradition. In this innovative volume, Horsley takes the reader deep in examining how Jesus’ economic project was shaped in opposition to the Roman imperial order and how Paul’s development of communities around the Mediterranean was part of creating an alternative society among those subject to Rome. This analysis sets in the foreground the fundamental issues of food security, access to resources, and liberation. These movements emerged in opposition to Roman violence, political oppression, and economic extraction. This ultimately leads the author to consider how these issues are more relevant than ever in confronting the most recent form of empire in global capitalism. While we are not living in a Roman imperial world, we must strategize to confront the ways in which the new empire uses violence, oppression, and extraction to the detriment of the vast majority in the world, but especially those who are most vulnerable.

Download or read book The Book of the Order of Chivalry Llibre de l Ordre de Cavalleria Libro de la Orden de Caballer a written by Ramon Llull and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Order of Chivalry was written in Catalan by Ramon Llull between 1274 and 1276 and is one of the author’s earliest works. After his death, it achieved a wide dissemination throughout Europe in part because it was considered the theoretical manual on knighthood par excellence. The book was written in Catalan for knights who might not have a knowledge of Latin. Llull devotes his treatise to the definition of the duties of a perfect knight. In addition, he is interested in delving into the religious and moral aspects of chivalry as well as in trying to reform this institution. This edition is based on the Catalan text from Luanco’s Libro de la Orden de Caballería del B. Raimundo Lulio, which is included here in facsimile format thanks to the generosity of the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona. To this are added new Spanish and contemporary English translations. In addition, this volume includes an edition of Caxton’s 16th century English translation.
