Book Honorable Work

Download or read book Honorable Work written by Tim Anstett and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1999 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all long for a sense of our true vocation -- a confirmation that through our work we are not simply involved in providing for our own needs but that we are contributing in a meaningful way to a greater whole that benefits the community at large. And yet the world of work today is in crisis -- a crisis of management, of quality, of service. Many people feel alienated from their work. Lack of fulfillment in the work place, a sense of not being recognized or valued for one's unique contribution, lead to feelings of discontent and unhappiness that translate into lack of commitment and interest toward one's work, poor-quality relationships with colleagues and employers and, ultimately, decreased levels of productivity and problematic customer relations for the company. Honorable Work offers an antidote to these negative trends and demonstrates in a practical, down-to-earth manner how success and satisfaction in the workplace can be achieved. Based upon the work of STRIVE (Success Training in Vocal Expression), it uses techniques and methods that have demonstrated their effectiveness in workshops and seminars with a variety of business organizations since 1984. Based upon the premise that We receive honor for what we do when we first give honor to it, Honorable Work consists of four steps -- Commitment, Ownership, Communication, and Integration. Anstett carefully explains all these stages and demonstrates how they can be realized through the practice of a variety of simple yet potent exercises that can bring about a shift in our entrenched attitudes and affect even our physical posture and the manner of our speaking. The pursuit of Honorable Work is an ideal yet achievable goal that restores authenticity and integrity to one's work and promotes positive interpersonal relationships not just at work but in life in general. Honorable Work will prove to be a vital and stimulating resource manual for all those actively involved in helping to improve the quality of our professional and corporate life.

Book Honorable Business

Download or read book Honorable Business written by James R. Otteson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business has a bad name for many people. It is easy to point to unethical and damaging behavior by companies. And it may seem straightforward to blame either indivuduals or, more generally, ruthless markets and amoral commercial society. In Honorable Business, James R. Otteson argues that business activity can be valuable in itself. The primary purpose of honorable businesses is to create value-for all parties. They look for mutually voluntary and mutually beneficial transactions, so that all sides of any exchange benefit, leading to increasing prosperity not just for one person or for one group at the expense of others but simultaneously for everyone involved. Done correctly, honorable business is a positive-sum activity that can enable flourishing for individuals and prosperity for society. Otteson connects honorable business with the political, economic, and cultural institutions that contribute to a just and humane society. He builds on Aristotle's conception of human beings as purposive creatures who are capable of constructing a plan for their lives that gives them a chance of achieving the highest good for humanity, focusing on autonomy and accountability, as well as good moral judgment. This good judgment can enable us to answer the why of what we do, not just the how. He also draws on Adam Smith's moral philosophy and political economy, and argues that Smithian institutions have played a significant role in the remarkable increase in worldwide prosperity we have seen over the last two hundred years. Otteson offers a pragmatic Code of Business Ethics, linked to a specific conception of professionalism, and defends this Code on the basis of a moral mandate to use one's limited resources of time, talent, and treasure to provide value for oneself only by simultaneously providing value to others. The result is well-articulated parameters within which business can be an acceptable-perhaps even praiseworthy-activity.

Honorable Profession: A Novel of American Politics is a compelling, hopeful story of a cynical former Secret Service agent and his idealistic daughter as they follow a longshot candidate into the perilous arena of presidential politics. After resigning from his agency under an ethical cloud, 46-year-old Dan Cahill commits himself to rebuilding his relationship with Megan, the college-aged daughter in Las Vegas he has long neglected. She persuades a reluctant Cahill to join the student-led campaign of a popular professor competing in the Nevada presidential primary against impossible odds. As they face powerful forces conspiring to clear the field, Cahill's deep-seated disdain for electoral politics collides with Megan's higher ideals. Each of their faiths are tested by political allies and adversaries, all desperate for victory, no matter the costs. Crafted by award-winning author Andy Kutler, Honorable Profession is an absorbing, modern-day political drama filled with authentic and indelible characters, each struggling with their own loyalties and principles as they duel with unscrupulous rivals and the meaning of public service.

Book Honorable Justice The Life of Oliver Wendell Holmes

Download or read book Honorable Justice The Life of Oliver Wendell Holmes written by Sheldon Novick and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eBook edition of this fine biography is now available. The print edition garnered extraordinary praise; a new preface brings this eBook edition up to date. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. aspired to be a poet and philosopher, was wounded in the Civil War, courted aristocratic women, became one of the greatest judges in American history, and lived long enough to give advice to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. We see though Holmes’s eyes, and his searching intelligence, almost a century of American history and the slow growth of a new understanding of the Constitution. “An ideal biography for the intelligent general reader... the fascination [Holmes] exerts, a combination of toughness and style, shines through this book.” — The New Yorker “[Novick] is the type of scholar who, though trained in law, asks Harvard’s Arnold Herbarium to identify some leaves pressed into an old love letter... One opens his book with high hopes, and as chapter follows masterly chapter the hopes mature into admiration of author and awe of subject.” — Edmund Morris, The New York Times “The book’s strength lies in its fast-paced vividness of narrative and its steadiness of belief in the wholeness and stature of Holmes as a man... Novick tells Holmes’s story with verve, insight, and a command of his material. Even his footnotes capture the reader.” — Max Lerner, The New Republic “[Holmes’s life] is stuff for great biography and Sheldon M. Novick has given us just that... a work of original and exact scholarship... concise and readable, yet provides enough historical and legal background to enable the nonspecialist to read the book with comprehension and pleasure.” — Hon. Richard A. Posner, The Wall Street Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After we’ve come to faith in Christ, God leaves us in this world for a very clear purpose: his own glory. But how are we to glorify God for the rest of our lives? The Bible reveals that God has laid before every Christian two infinite journeys which we are to travel every day: the internal journey of growth into Christlike maturity, and the external journey of worldwide evangelism and missions. This book is a road map for the internal journey, laying out how we are to grow in four major areas: knowledge, faith, character, and action. In this book, we’ll learn how God grows us in knowledge, faith, character, and action. We’ll also discover that spiritual knowledge constantly feeds our growing faith, faith will transform our character, our transformed character will result in an array of actions more and more glorifying to God, and our actions will feed our spiritual knowledge. This upward spiral will lead us to become more and more like Jesus Christ in holiness. And not only will this book help us understand Christian growth in detail, it will also give us a passion to grow every day for his glory.
