Download or read book Being is Better Than Not Being written by Christopher V. Mirus and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his contemplative works on nature, Aristotle twice appeals to the general principle that being is better than not being. Taking his cue from this claim, Christopher V. Mirus offers an extended, systematic account of how Aristotle understands being itself to be good. Mirus begins with the human, examining Aristotle’s well-known claim that the end of a human life is the good of the human substance as such—which turns out to be the good of the human capacity for thought. Human thought, however, is not concerned with human affairs alone. It is also contemplative, and contemplation is oriented toward the beauty of its objects. In each of the three branches of contemplative thought—mathematics, natural science, and theology—the intelligibility of being renders it beautiful to thought. Both in nature and in human life, moreover, the being that is beautiful through its intelligibility serves also as an end of motion and of action; hence it counts not only as beautiful (kalon), but also as good (agathon). The persistent concern of thought with the beautiful reveals what is at stake for human beings in Aristotle’s larger metaphysics of the good: in the connection between goodness and actuality that structures his natural science and metaphysics, in his explicit claim that being is better than not being, and in his concepts of order and determinacy, which help connect being with goodness. These in turn shed light on his concepts of the complete and the self-sufficient, on his teleological understanding of the four elements, and on the curious role of the honorable in his natural science and metaphysics.
Download or read book Souls with Longing written by Bernard J. Dobski and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of William Shakespeare vividly represent for our admiration and study a pageant of souls with longing in whose wake we ceaselessly follow. Through some of his most memorable characters, Shakespeare illuminates the nature and character--as well as consequences--of our distinctively human passions and ambition, in particular our desire for and pursuit of both honor and love. The contributors to this collaborative volume (scholars in English Literature, Political Philosophy, and the Humanities) argue that Shakespeare has much to teach us about our longing for honor and love in particular, and thus about who we are, what we desire, and why. Through sustained reflection on the Shakespearean portraits of honor and love, which are the focus of the chapters in Souls With Longing, we become more keenly aware of our own humanity and come to know ourselves more profoundly. As the abiding popularity of his works aptly demonstrates, Shakespeare's unforgettable portraits of souls with longing--his representations of honor and love--continue to exert undeniable sway over our political, moral, and romantic imaginations.
Download or read book Roman Honor written by Carlin A. Barton and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to coax Roman history closer to the bone, to the breath and matter of the living being. Drawing from a remarkable array of ancient and modern sources, Carlin Barton offers the most complex understanding to date of the emotional and spiritual life of the ancient Romans. Her provocative and original inquiry focuses on the sentiments of honor that shaped the Romans' sense of themselves and their society. Speaking directly to the concerns and curiosities of the contemporary reader, Barton brings Roman society to life, elucidating the complex relation between the inner life of its citizens and its social fabric. Though thoroughly grounded in the ancient writings—especially the work of Seneca, Cicero, and Livy—this book also draws from contemporary theories of the self and social theory to deepen our understanding of ancient Rome. Barton explores the relation between inner desires and social behavior through an evocative analysis of the operation, in Roman society, of contests and ordeals, acts of supplication and confession, and the sense of shame. As she fleshes out Roman physical and psychological life, she particularly sheds new light on the consequential transition from republic to empire as a watershed of Roman social relations. Barton's ability to build productively on both old and new scholarship on Roman history, society, and culture and her imaginative use of a wide range of work in such fields as anthropology, sociology, psychology, modern history, and popular culture will make this book appealing for readers interested in many subjects. This beautifully written work not only generates insight into Roman history, but also uses that insight to bring us to a new understanding of ourselves, our modern codes of honor, and why it is that we think and act the way we do.

Download or read book Aristotle s Parva naturalia written by Ronald Polansky and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-05-20 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle’s Parva naturalia continues the investigation begun in the De anima. The De anima defines the soul and treats its main powers, nutrition, sense perception, intellection, and locomotion. The Parva naturalia — On sense and sensible objects, On memory and recollection, On sleep, On dreams, On divination in sleep, On motion of animals (De motu animalium ), On length and shortness of life, and On youth and old age and respiration — attends more to bodily involvement with soul. While each work offers fascinating and challenging insights, there has never been as extensive a commentary covering them together. A reason is that the works have often been viewed as incidental and even inconsistent. The De motu animalium has not typically been included, when viewed as an isolated work on animal locomotion. This commentary argues that the treatises, considered together and with the De motu among them, display a tight sequence manifesting an artful, yet easily overlooked, design. We reveal many techniques of Aristotle’s writing that have received little consideration previously. Our commentary contributes to a unified and comprehensive account of Aristotle’s overall project regarding the soul and its connections with the body.

This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we leave our destiny in the hands of others and live our life in the past, we immediately destroy our future. Scientists in the human genome industry have proved that all humans are 99.9 percent the same. Why then are some ethnicities progressive and others nonprogressive? Our current problems are not with the slave or colonial masters. We Are Becoming the Problem Now! Had we continued in the legacy of our ancestors simply known as slaves, we ought to have been the pride and joy of the whole world. They went through unimaginable pain, sorrow, hardship, and torment. They survived and even succeeded by leaving a godly legacy behind in the Negro spiritual songs and in arts, education, industry, and every conceivable field. Our current major problems as blacks in Africa and all over the world simply put are leadership and disunity. We do the dirty work by self-destroying ourselves and each other. Only few illiterate Caucasian would engage in overt discrimination. The majority of us have been trained in the art and act of covert self-destruction and in the destruction of the whole. We have so much zeal but without knowledge. We must bear in mind that zeal without knowledge is dead, so also knowledge without zeal is equally lifeless (Romans 10:2). Not until we harness our zeal and knowledge comprehensively can we live a progressive life. It has been said that if the West is to stand still and halt all development and progress, Africa would never catch up. Yet we have PhDs in every conceivable field. Do we blame that on the ancestors of the slave or colonial masters? No! We are to be blamed. We Are Becoming the Problem Now! Those who have ears to hear, let them hear because time is of the essence.
Download or read book Life in St Lucia written by Shedrac Decaille and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was only one way this book could be written. I had to go undercover and pose as a redneck. At any moment my cover could have been blown placing my life in danger. At the very least, my Bloomingdales credit card could have been confiscated and my complete collection of Barry Manilow CDs destroyed. In spite of these risks, I persevered. It was only after I made my way back to Yankee lines that I was able to write this book. I still suffer from episodes of "Post-Traumatic-Stress Syndrome" in which I am chased by a giant killer crawfish. Hopefully, therapy, medication and a liberal amount of Jack Daniel's will erase that demon from my subconscious.
Download or read book The Leadership Series written by Rayola Kelley and published by . This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three books that make up the Leadership Series were written after my friend and co-laborer in the Gospel, Jeannette Haley, pointed out that there seemed to be much confusion surrounding godly leadership in the kingdom of God. The main reason for this confusion is that many Christians consider leadership according to the world's standards. Jesus even warned His followers in Matthew 20:24-27 that there is a vast difference between what the world considers to be greatness in leadership, and how the kingdom of God regards leadership that is marked with the excellence of greatness. As this book illustrates, true leaders in God's kingdom are not born; rather, they are forged. In order to effectively bring forth a leader, such individuals must learn to recognize that which hinders them and overcome these enemies. Obviously, a leader cannot lead others where he or she has not yet walked. The first book, Overcoming, addresses the true enemies of the cross of Christ, and reveals that they do not always come from without. Many such hindrances prove to be nothing more than moral deviations that are present in our character. Therefore, the first book identifies the true enemies of the Christian life and brings insight into what it takes to overcome each enemy. Great leaders also understand how authority and power are to influence and work in their lives. The second book, A Matter of Authority and Power reveals that real leaders recognize true authority and understand how power is to be used to carry out their responsibilities. This book will undo any misconceptions about these two subjects and will produce the sobriety that must be present when it comes to possessing the quality of true leadership in the kingdom of God. The final book, The Dynamics of True Leadership, follows the lives of the great leaders of the Bible. This book reveals the type of soul each leader possessed. It explains the choices these leaders made and how it impacted the kingdom of God.
