Book excerpt: It's September 1888, and Commander Peter Wake, Office of Naval Intelligence, has been ordered to salvage a failed espionage operation against the Spanish Navy in Havana. His network of spies in the city has been compromised, international political tensions are escalating, the U.S. presidential election is looming, and Wake has five days to locate and rescue two of his network who are missing and assumed captured by the Spanish. Wake immediately realizes that his old nemesis, Colonel Isidro Marrón, head of the dreaded Spanish counterintelligence service, has set the perfect trap to kill him. Wake's covert American team of experts in linguistics, chemistry, and lock picking are soon hard-pressed to simply stay alive as they struggle to carry out his hastily conceived plan. Amidst all of this chaos, Wake saves the lives of Havana's Spanish elite, forms a nervous friendship with the colonial governor, receives an odd message from his Cuban revolutionary friend José Martí, encounters the shadowy world of international Freemasonry, and discovers an unusual bond with the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt. Can Peter Wake trust anyone—or anything—in Cuba?

Book Bushido the Soul of Japan Illustrated

Download or read book Bushido the Soul of Japan Illustrated written by Inazo Nitobe and published by Strelbytskyy Multimedia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bushido: The Soul of Japan is a book written by Inazō Nitobe exploring the way of the samurai. He found in Bushido, the Way of the Warrior, the sources of the seven virtues most admired by his people: rectitude, courage, benevolence, politeness, sincerity, honor and loyalty. It was published in 1899. A best-seller in its day, it was read by many influential foreigners, among them President Theodore Roosevelt, President John F. Kennedy and Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts. Nitobe also delved into the other indigenous traditions of Japan, such as Buddhism, Shintoism, Confucianism and the moral guidelines handed down over hundreds of years by Japan's samurai and sages. He sought similarities and contrasts by citing the shapers of European and American thought and civilization going back to the Romans, the Greeks and Biblical times. He found a close resemblance between the samurai ethos of what he called Bushido and the spirit of medieval chivalry and the ethos of ancient Greece, as observed in books such as the Iliad of Homer.

Book excerpt: Jacob Stearne's Top Secret mission to secure the nation’s future is thrown into chaos by his arrest for murder. A group of young physicists sequester in Latvia to finalize a green technology worth trillions of dollars. Billionaires want to steal their work. While oil-rich nations want to destroy it. The president has tasked decorated veteran Jacob Stearne with bringing their research back to the US—which he intends to do as soon as he can break out of jail and beat a murder rap. With an over-zealous police captain running the manhunt in dead-or-alive mode, Jacob is forced to find the real killer while fleeing the law. With ambiguous help from a dubious crew comprised of a young stripper, a claimant to the Russian throne, and the naïve physicists, he quickly discovers: everyone lies. As the Latvian dragnet closes in, and betrayals come from friends and foe alike, Jacob must rely on Stearne’s Law for survival: Paranoia is the result of acute situational awareness. To save the scientists and repatriate the research, Jacob must outwit a Russian oligarch. But this time, as he holds a bomb with a ticking timer, he may have run out of luck. Within the bounds of the ranch, respect is earned, and trust is sacred—except when it comes to the women in his life. Helen, once a vibrant spirit, now confined to a wheelchair, will do anything to protect Trent from unsuitable, money-hungry women, even if it means weaving a web of lies. Flossy seeks to ensnare Trent in her web of desire. But when her intentions turn to marriage, Helen's lies spiral out of control. Sassy, a sweet young woman with a secret past, resorts to deceit when Trent questions her about his personal life. Her prayers for forgiveness echo through the vast prairie. Patsy, the pretty teacher, and Angel, Trent's younger sister, also harbor secrets, further complicating the tangled web of deception that surrounds Trent. Trent's world is shaken in the wake of a devastating tornado, testing the limits of his strength and love. As he faces the aftermath, he questions his own feelings and seeks the elusive truth of genuine love.
