Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2.7, Education University of Hong Kong (Department of English Language Education - Education University of Hong Kong), course: Introduction to Sociolinguistics, language: English, abstract: Language is neutral but with social factors will become significant to people’s background and their impression to others. Different gender, socioeconomic status, as well as religion will have different language choices and language preference, so-called language attitude. Apart from these reason, nationality is also an influential variable. Language is divided into superiority and inferiority such as English is the most popular and people are eager to learn. Because of military power, economy, and international status if its adapted countries, it acts as lingua franca that mean a common medium of communication for the speakers from different countries. It indicated that people tend to choose advanced countries’ language. Nonetheless, this is just an observation to English by sociologist. This research was designated to study the feelings and perceptions of people towards some rare and strange languages, like Kanuri and Welsh. Supposedly, Kanuri that used in Nigeria would not be welcomed so much by people while Welsh that used in United Kingdom would be positively thought by others. Then, through the pattern of interviewees’ description on the languages, and the contrast of interviewees’ reaction after letting them know the origin of the languages, one of discussion in this research that was to find whether the reputation of countries affect people’s perception of the languages would be revealed. Also, this research would like to study the relationship between the degree of acceptance of various language of the interviewees and the number of acquired languages besides the biliteracy and trilingualism in Hong Kong.

Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Language Attitudes of Hong Kong Students towards English, Cantonese and Putonghua Submitted by Lee Sze Yan for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 This paper aims at investigating the current language attitude towards English, Putonghua and Cantonese among Hong Kong secondary school students and exploring the status and development of English, Putonghua and Cantonese in st Hong Kong in the 21 Century. This study involved 184 Form One to Four students in Hong Kong. The research is quantitative in nature and discusses and analyses the data statistically. The major findings are, firstly, English still enjoys a superior status in Hong Kong after 1997. Secondly, although the popularity of Putonghua has been rising, it has not threatened the superior status of English in Hong Kong and it will not replace English as the dominant language in the foreseeable future. Lastly, Cantonese is used in formal contexts such as meetings in Legislative Council and proceedings in the court in Hong Kong. This indicates that Cantonese will not remain only as a language in the home. Comparing these findings with previous studies of language attitudes in Hong Kong from the 1980s to the 1990s, it seems that the superior status of English in Hong Kong is still maintained. On the other hand, the status of Putonghua and Cantonese in Hong Kong will rise continuously in future. i DOI: 10.5353/th_b3160825 Subjects: English language - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong Cantonese dialects - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong Chinese language - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong High school students - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

ABSTRACT With the change of sovereignty in 1997 and the rapid development of China in recent years, there appears an increasing need for Hong Kong people to master Putonghua, the National language. English, the language of prestige in Hong Kong throughout the colonial period, seems to be under threat. This paper serves to find out the current status of the two st languages in Hong Kong in the 21 Century. A survey was conducted to find out the language attitudes of Hong Kong people towards English and Putonghua in the current Hong Kong context. Results revealed that respondents continue to hold a favorable attitude towards English and that its prominent status is undeniable because of its indispensable instrumental value. With the rising popularity of Putonghua in the international arena, respondents acknowledged the importance of this national language and most claimed that they would like to learn this language in the future. It is, however, worth noting that respondents seemed to be in favor of Putonghua only for its instrumental value, and not its emotional attachment to the mother country. 6 DOI: 10.5353/th_b2952271 Subjects: Chinese language - China - Hong Kong - Public opinion English language - China - Hong Kong - Public opinion

Book Hong Kong English

Download or read book Hong Kong English written by Kingsley Bolton and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant view of many linguists and educators has been that Hong Kong English is a variety of the language that is derived from, and dependent on, the metropolitan norm of British English. It has been argued that English in Hong Kong was never 'nativized' as in other Asian societies, and that it has not deserved the recognition accorded to other varieties of Asian English. The contributions to this book challenge that view in a number of ways. In addressing sociolinguistic, structural, and literary issues, they provide an up-to-date survey of current use of Hong Kong English, and redress the question of its autonomy in terms of both distinctive linguistic features and the growing literary creativity of the variety. An original and highly informed discussion on the futures for Hong Kong English, and chapters providing additional resources for the study of the variety, are also included.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Englishes in Hong Kong: Students' awareness of, attitudes towards accent differences and the intelligibility of accents of English Submitted by Lam Chun Hin for the Degree of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong August, 2007 This dissertation examines Hong Kong students' awareness of, attitudes towards accent differences and the intelligibility of accents of English in Hong Kong. This study involved 65 secondary school students. An accent recognition test was used to investigate whether they could identify various native and non-native accents of English, mostly commonly heard in Hong Kong. A questionnaire was administered to the students to explore their attitudes towards accents. Four comprehension listening tests were used to examine which accent would be understood best by the subjects. Previous research suggests that Hong Kong students can easily recognize the local accent of English. The findings of this study confirm this. The questionnaire confirms that most students would prefer the native accents to the local accent as a learning model. The listening tests show that the British accent is better comprehended followed by the Hong Kong, Australian and American accents. It seems that familiarity with an accent is an important factor when it comes to comprehension. Book Multilingual Hong Kong Languages Literacies and Identities

Download or read book Multilingual Hong Kong Languages Literacies and Identities written by David C.S. Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives an up-to-date account of the language situation and social context in multilingual Hong Kong. After an in-depth, interpretive analysis of various language contact phenomena, it shows why it is such a tall order for Hongkongers to live up to the Special Administrative Region government’s language policy goalpost, ‘biliteracy and trilingualism’. A detailed contrastive analysis between Cantonese and (a) English, (b) Modern Written Chinese, and (c) Putonghua helps explain the nature of the linguistic and acquisitional challenges involved. Economic forces and sociopolitical realities helped shape the ‘mother tongue education’ or ‘dual MoI streaming’ policy since September 1998. The book provides a critical review of the significant milestones and key policy documents from the early 1990s, and outlines the concerns of stakeholders at the receiving end. Another MoI debate concerns the feasibility and desirability of teaching Chinese in Putonghua (TCP). Based on a critical review of the TCP literature and recent psycholinguistic and neuroscience research, the language-in-education policy implications are discussed, followed by a few recommendations. Hongkongers of South Asian descent saw their life chances curtailed as a result of the post-1997 changes in the language requirements for gaining access to civil service positions and higher education. Based on a study of 15 South Asian undergraduate students’ prior language learning experiences, recommendations are made to help redress that social inequity problem.
