This is a fictional account of Hong Kong being invaded by the combined forces of France and Russia. This visionary novel by an anonymous author has been forgotten for a hundred years. Yet when published as The Back Door during the negotiations between Imperial China and Great Britain over the lease of the New Territories, the story aroused serious British fears about the possibility of defending Hong Kong against attack. Copies were then to be found on the desks of British officials in London. Matthew Nathan, who became Governor in 1904, was advised to read the book. But it was not only in 1897 that the book was accurate in its observations on military tactics. There are many intriguing parallels with the Christmas 1941 invasion by the Japanese and the role of the Hong Kong Volunteers at that time. Three strategically vulnerable locations identified in The Back Door were considered for attack in 1941. Had the Japanese read this fictional battle when plotting their manoeuvres? If so, The Back Door not only taught one way to defend Hong Kong, but also another to attack it.

Book excerpt: In August 1855, 16-year-old Chaloner Alabaster left England for Hong Kong, to take up a position as a student interpreter in the China Consular Service. He would stay for almost 40 years, climbing the rungs of the service and eventually becoming consul-general of Canton. When he retired he returned to England and received a knighthood. He died in 1898. Throughout his adult life, Alabaster kept diaries. In the first four volumes of these diaries, collected here by Benjamin Penny, the teenage Alabaster recorded his thoughts and observations, told himself anecdotes, and exploded in outbursts of anger and frustration. With British Hong Kong and French Indochina on its northern and western shores, the ‘Asian Mediterranean’ was for almost a century a crucible of power and an axis of economic struggle for coastal shipping companies from various nations. Merchant steamers shipped cargoes and passengers between ports of the region. Hong Kong, the global port city, and the colonial ports of Saigon and Haiphong developed into major hubs for the flow of goods and people, while Guangzhouwan survived as an almost forgotten outpost of Indochina. While previous research in this field has largely remained within the confines of colonial history, this book uses the examples of French and German companies operating in the South China Sea to demonstrate the extent to which transnational actors and business networks interacted with imperial power and the process of globalisation.
