Download or read book Hong Kong in China written by Gungwu Wang and published by Cavendish Square Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic handover of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China on July 1, 1997, amid much tension and speculation, closes one significant colonial chapter in Asia. At the same time, it also sets the stage for new political and economic possibilities with China closely involved with a key financial center in Asia. Hong Kong in China comprises a collection of papers evaluating the situation in Hong Kong SAR over the last two years. The handing over of Hong Kong to China presents a challenge to the legal system which is intrinsically and delicately linked to the political vision of one country, two systems. While politicians and legalists seek to work out the model, the people of Hong Kong confront the dilemma of an identity crisis, on top of the contentious social problems presented by the immigration of Chinese mainlanders.

Book Dynamics and Dilemma

Download or read book Dynamics and Dilemma written by Bin Yu and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors treat the interactive process between the mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong as a convenient organising framework to describe the economic, social, and communicative intercourse between the "core" Chinese entities -- mainly the mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong -- as well as the Chinese communities in other countries. The interactions between various Chinese entities are defined here as an informal, spontaneous, and interactive process incorporating a deeper cultural cohesion and a complex relationship across formal political boundaries, and sometimes well beyond official anticipation and regulation.

Book Can Hong Kong Exceptionalism Last Dilemmas of Governance and Public Administration over Five Decades 1970s 2020

Download or read book Can Hong Kong Exceptionalism Last Dilemmas of Governance and Public Administration over Five Decades 1970s 2020 written by Anthony B. L. CHEUNG and published by City University of HK Press. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong under British rule was a prime example of exceptionalism in many aspects — economic, political, and even social. It was governed under a colonial structure and yet had enjoyed a large degree of social and economic freedom, as well as fiscal self-sufficiency and autonomy from London. After returning to Chinese rule in 1997, Hong Kong has continued to thrive as a relatively resilient city-state still known for efficiency and effectiveness despite tensions and scepticism about its political future. This book carries decades of academic observations and the author’s personal political experience. It reviews and reflects on the past trajectory of governance and administration, identifying strengths and capabilities as well as constraints and vulnerabilities of Hong Kong as a polity and society, while charting its course of ‘exceptionalism’ within a new context and under changing conditions. As this book concludes, the exceptionalism of Hong Kong not only hinges on institutional arrangements and historical inheritance but also on the statecraft of the administration of the day. ********************************************************* “… This is a text for deep reading, reflection, and deliberation.” – Professor LUI Tai-lok Chair Professor of Hong Kong Studies, Director of the Academy of Hong Kong Studies, Director of the Centre for Greater China Studies, and Former Vice President (Research & Development) at The Education University of Hong Kong “… a gem … whatever your political stand is, you have to admire Professor Cheung’s thorough observations and profound ideas on what made this city tick…” – Mr LAM Woon-kwong Former Secretary for the Civil Service and Secretary for Home Affairs, and Former Convenor of Non-Official Members of the Executive Council (2012–2017) “… a compelling addition to the literature on Hong Kong.” – Professor Darryl S.L. Book Housing Dilemma of Young People in Hong Kong

Download or read book Housing Dilemma of Young People in Hong Kong written by Jing Li and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This working paper raises the question whether Hong Kong's housing problems for young people can be solved. Unlike Singapore which maintains a highly diversified manufacturing sector, Hong Kong has moved its manufacturing sector to the Mainland. The imbalanced economic structure which heavily relies on financial service has thus put Hong Kong into a dilemma: The more Hong Kong depends on the financial service sector, the less of young people will be able to find employment opportunities from the manufacturing sector in the future. The deep-rooted problem is that prosperity of the financial service sector must depend on the vitality and growth potential of the real economy. If the production pie is decreasing which drives people to make money from renting house rather than work for better payment, then housing almost certainly acts as a vehicle to accelerate the income polarization process as it has higher barrier to new market entrants.
