Book Hong Kong s Transition to Chinese Rule

Download or read book Hong Kong s Transition to Chinese Rule written by Ralf Horlemann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty, it appears that the 'high degree of autonomy' promised to Hong Kong is limited in many ways. China's reservations about the development of democracy in Hong Kong lies at the heart of the problem. The conceptual inadequacies set out in the Basic Law, Hong Kong's mini-constitution, show a correlation between a lack of democracy and a loss of autonomy. This book argues that genuine autonomy from the central government in Beijing is impossible without a democratic system in Hong Kong. Developments since the handover have, however, demonstrated that democratic trends have been halted and even reversed and that democracy is not likely to be established in Hong Kong in the near future.

Book Hong Kong s Reunion with China The Global Dimensions

Download or read book Hong Kong s Reunion with China The Global Dimensions written by Gerard A. Postiglione and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues surrounding Hong Kong's global position and international links grow increasingly complex by the day as the process of Hong Kong's transformation from a British colony to a Chinese Special Administration Region unfolds. This volume addresses a number of questions relating to this process. How international is Hong Kong? What are its global and international dimensions? How important are these dimensions to its continued success? How will these dimensions change, especially beyond the sphere of economics? Is Hong Kong's internationalization, defined in terms of its willingness to embrace international values and its capacity to maintain its international presence, at risk? These questions are presented as they pertain to the changing situation; relations between mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; the positions of Australia, Canada and the United States on Hong Kong; internalization of international legal values; Americanization vs. Asianization; linkages to the world through Guangdong; strategies to emigrate overseas, cultural internationalization; media internationalization and universities within the global economy.

Book Understanding the Political Culture of Hong Kong The Paradox of Activism and Depoliticization

Download or read book Understanding the Political Culture of Hong Kong The Paradox of Activism and Depoliticization written by Lam Wai-man and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the widely held belief that Hong Kong's political culture is one of indifference. The term "political indifference" is used to suggest the apathy, naivete, passivity, and utilitarianism of Hong Kong's people toward political life. Taking a broad historical look at political participation in the former colony, Wai-man Lam argues that this is not a valid view and demonstrates Hong Kong's significant political activism in thirteen selected case studies covering 1949 through the present. Through in-depth analysis of these cases she provides a new understanding of the nature of Hong Kong politics, which can be described as a combination of political activism and a culture of depoliticization.

Book Britain s Cold War in Cyprus and Hong Kong

Download or read book Britain s Cold War in Cyprus and Hong Kong written by Christopher Sutton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linking two defining narratives of the twentieth century, Sutton’s comparative study of Hong Kong and Cyprus – where two of the empire’s most effective communist parties operated – examines how British colonial policy-makers took to cultural and ideological battlegrounds to fight the anti-colonial imperialism of their communist enemies in the Cold War. The structure and intentional nature of the British colonial system grants unprecedented access to British perceptions and strategies, which sought to balance constructive socio-political investments with regressive and self-defeating repression, neither of which Britain could afford in the Cold War conflict of empires.

Book Information Technology and the Challenge for Hong Kong

Download or read book Information Technology and the Challenge for Hong Kong written by Janice M. Burn and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century is frequently cited as the Asia-Pacific Century due to the phenomenal success of Asian countries over the last three decades. Nowhere has this been more visible than in Hong Kong which became the first Newly Industrialized Economy to enter the world's top ten trading communities in 1991. This book describes the current state of information technology (IT) exploitation in Hong Kong and the role of IT in the rapid advancement of the Asia-Pacific region. It raises issues - such as the impact of politics, culture and societal growth on IT effectiveness - but does not try to provide all the answers, and is therefore of interest to both business and IT managers in global organizations or companies operating in cross-cultural settings. It is also invaluable for students of business, management and IT who will play a strategic role in the future development of the new global economy.
