Book excerpt: Take to the sky with Apis, one honeybee, as she embarks on her journey through life! An Orbis Pictus Honor Book Selected for the Texas Bluebonnnet Master List Finalist for the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books A tiny honeybee emerges through the wax cap of her cell. Driven to protect and take care of her hive, she cleans the nursery and feeds the larvae and the queen. But is she strong enough to fly? Not yet! Apis builds wax comb to store honey, and transfers pollen from other bees into the storage. She defends the hive from invaders. And finally, she begins her new life as an adventurer. The confining walls of the hive fall away as Apis takes to the air, finally free, in a brilliant double-gatefold illustration where the clear blue sky is full of promise-- and the wings of dozens of honeybees, heading out in search of nectar to bring back to the hive. Eric Rohmann's exquisitely detailed illustrations bring the great outdoors into your hands in this poetically written tribute to the hardworking honeybee. Award-winning author Candace Fleming describes the life cycle of the honeybee in accessible, beautiful language. Similar in form and concept to the Sibert and Orbis Pictus award book Giant Squid, Honeybee also features a stunning gatefold and an essay on the plight of honeybees. Book Bee Optimism

Download or read book Bee Optimism written by Jay D Evans and published by Ibra & Nbb. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book reveals all: Jay Evans approaches science and life with clarity and optimism. Every essay in this book is concise yet funny, and rich in content. Each cleverly-worded chapter uncovers exciting findings from complicated research. Some topics covered in these 34 short essays include how bees' fat bodies may hold clues to new mite control strategies (the "Fats Domino Effect"), an aerial view of helicopter beekeepers and burned out foragers, why bees drink dirty water, chasmogamy in soybeans, "trait rot", genetic signatures described as chords composed of eight genetic notes, and winter bees as the third worker form. The essay "Magic Bullets for Mites" is a great example of Jay's ability to communicate complex topics with compelling, accessible prose. Even though he muses that "we are attempting to manage a social organism that is affected by rules we do not yet fully understand" Jay remains firmly rooted in the #Beeoptimism movement: for his scientific mind, the unknown is full of possibilities. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and devoured it in one sitting, although I recommend savoring it more slowly. Marla Spivak St. Paul, Minnesota

God Saves The Honeybee is a touching allegory about a honeybees timely realization that she was letting the sting of past hurts prohibit her from living her purpose of visiting flowers (community), spreading life (the Good News), and producing the sweet by-product of honey (love and kindness). Join Honeybee in her journey as she learns, with the help of her Father, the true meaning of success.

Book Saving Animals

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elan Abrell
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2021-05-04
  • ISBN : 1452961921
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Saving Animals written by Elan Abrell and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating and unprecedented ethnography of animal sanctuaries in the United States In the past three decades, animal rights advocates have established everything from elephant sanctuaries in Africa to shelters that rehabilitate animals used in medical testing, to homes for farmed animals, abandoned pets, and entertainment animals that have outlived their “usefulness.” Saving Animals is the first major ethnography to focus on the ethical issues animating the establishment of such places, where animals who have been mistreated or destined for slaughter are allowed to live out their lives simply being animals. Based on fieldwork at animal rescue facilities across the United States, Elan Abrell asks what “saving,” “caring for,” and “sanctuary” actually mean. He considers sanctuaries as laboratories where caregivers conceive and implement new models of caring for and relating to animals. He explores the ethical decision making around sanctuary efforts to unmake property-based human–animal relations by creating spaces in which humans interact with animals as autonomous subjects. Saving Animals illustrates how caregivers and animals respond by cocreating new human–animal ecologies adapted to the material and social conditions of the Anthropocene. Bridging anthropology with animal studies and political philosophy, Saving Animals asks us to imagine less harmful modes of existence in a troubled world where both animals and humans seek sanctuary.
