Book Honey I Bought an Airplane

Download or read book Honey I Bought an Airplane written by Bob Hechlinski and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one else ever took a trip like this. Nearly 600 trips, actually. But who cares, I thought, when first approached to edit the manuscript for this book about flying into every little airport in Indiana, then moving on to those in surrounding states? Pilots? Perhaps. Even so Im a writer, not a pilot. And Bob Hechlinski is a pilot not a writer. Except Bob has an insatiable curiosity about people, places, events, you name it. To him, an airport is more than a name or a spot on a map. Hes a great listener. He has ears and eyes for detail nuggets that many people either overlook or dont connect with other nuggets like dots on a page, to create picture after picture after picture. And Bob has a gift for gab. Storytelling, if you will. So if you believe (as I do) that writing is talking when you cant be there, give this book a listen. Hear things you never knew about John Dillinger, Al Capone, a WWII pilot named OHare back-road encounters on Mackinac Island and not flying under the bridge out-maneuvering storm clouds the Oshkosh air show close-knit neighborhoods with hangar-garages airports in Ohio police in Gary, Indiana the link between Northwestern University and a historic Lake Michigan passenger-ferry tragedy how a teenagers Happy Birthday flight launched a career and more. Much more. Some people read books from page 1; the opening line hooks them. Others check the ending first. (If I like how it ends, Ill like getting there.) With Honey, feel free to start in the middle; pick a page any page. Chances are, you will quickly be drawn in and pulled onward from one mini-tale to the next. And at some point, youll say Geez, lets go back and read the rest! I did. Cmon along for the ride. Bob makes even the shortest hop a fun trip. Richard E. Schingoethe

She believes her husband, Sam, is retired from the military and working for a small aviation company. Sam needs to get his wife away from danger without giving away any top secret information. The lies start with his announcement that he bought a private airplane and the lies continue to build. Instead of going to Las Vegas for a romantic weekend, Carly wakes up in a strange town. She is rescued from being sent to an Institution by the local sheriff when a member of the Dave crew comes to her aid. She gets dropped off on the side of the highway by a taxi driver who pulls out a gun, wanders in the pouring rain until she comes to the door of Walter and Ruthie. One moment Carly is an ordinary housewife, mother and grandmother in an ordinary neighborhood. Next thing she knows people are pulling out guns and tossing her into the trunk of a car. When she is kidnapped and in the center of a nuclear missile threat on innocent people, will Sam be able to rescue her on time?

Book excerpt: Life has been a great adventure for Rick Elkins. A former US Navy fighter pilot during World War II, an airline pilot, and a consummate biker, he has never been afraid of taking risks. But though his mind is still sharp, his eighty-three-year-old body is not. Unless he proceeds with a risky surgery, heart failure awaits him. Rick decides against the surgery, wanting his remaining time on Earth free of doctors and hospitals. But nearing the end triggers a time of sober reflection, and in his mind he travels back to the end of World War II, when he started his career as a pilot. It was then that he developed a love for motorcycles and for Angie Mertz, a beautiful stewardess who later becomes his wife. Tragedy struck after only a year of marriage, however, when an auto accident claimed Angie's life. Rick, distraught, took an extended leave from his job and took his Harley-Davison motorcycle on a long road trip to California, where he met Annette, a fellow biker. Their on-and-off affair and the events that followed would alter Rick's world in a way he never expected. Now that Rick is old, alone, and unable to do the things he loves, he's ready to bow out gracefully. But then someone comes into his life that just might change his way of thinking about the way out.

Book excerpt: In 1967, I changed the name of the groom months before the wedding. I had met my prince, my hero. We were the perfect couple, well educated, from good families. We were a witty, intelligent team and the love we shared for each other knew no bounds. But there were demons in his past that could destroy us both and almost did.I was an abused woman for almost eighteen years. During that marriage I kept a diary so I could begin to understand what I was living, and more important, why. This book has been written from the pages of that diary and chronicles the marriage from perfect couple through the torment and humiliation of physical and emotional abuse to the psychological growth that ultimately led my children and I to freedom. So you don't think I am not some fly-by-night person eager to harvest some gripes of wrath, I believe this book can afford abused women insight into their own domestic holocausts and provide a mirror of hope, understanding and strength. For the millions of women seeking escape, For Worse could become their emotional handgun to freedom. He is now deceased. I am alive. I always thought it would be the other way around.

Book The Acts of the Holy Spirit Our Personal Journey

Download or read book The Acts of the Holy Spirit Our Personal Journey written by Chris Morris and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is God still in the miracle business? Did miracles only occur for the early church? Can God really do the impossible? Is the Bible trustworthy, and was Jesus telling the truth? Can we physically experience or even see miracles? Like most people, when I was young, I had faith in Jesus but scoffed at people who said they had witnessed miracles. Then I witnessed one little miracle. I was dumbfounded. I then witnessed another, and then another, and before long I witnessed miracle after miracle . . . incredible miracles that I had been told only the early church could experience. I wrote this book for my children, because I wanted them to have a record of the acts of the Holy Spirit we had witnessed on our journey through life. Everything Jesus said proved to be true. Our family is not special. We are not saints. We are not unusual. We have our problems and shortcomings. I suspect our family is not much different than yours, except perhaps for one thing. We pray for the Lord's help and believe His help is on the way! Jesus said in Mark 11:23""24, "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them."

Book Low Flying Aircraft

  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Low Flying Aircraft written by T. M. McNally and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low Flying Aircraft is a collection of interrelated stories in which one life is equally capable of influencing another "under a sky the size of history." Spanning a period of fourteen years, the stories are connected by the pasts of Orion McClenahan and Helen Jowalski, childhood friends whose fathers shared a law practice in Chicago. In 1976 a freak accident changes their lives irrevocably, and the stories are about the people Orion and Helen grow up to be, the people they love, and the people they lose along the way. In "Paris, the Easy Way," Sam is a stable manager who steps in to the lives of others while trying to avoid his own. Troubled by the disappearance of his brother in Cambodia and his own complicated relationship with his brother's wife, Sam finally accepts the mysteries that surround him: "Lightning, gravity, love--I've never properly understood any of it." Anna, a columnist writing on the complexities that face young modern women, loses all sense of her identity while visiting her father, a dying man who wants a grandson almost as much as he wants a daughter like Milly, the heroine of his favorite western novel. The voices in this collection describe a world of uncertain borders, where individuals are sustained by "thin, brief moments of direction." Orion a disillusioned photojournalist, sets himself free from his wealthy family and their Midwestern habits by discarding the things of his life: a clock radio, a blender, paperbacks. He will board a plane and fly to Central America "in order to document the situation, do some good." In "Breathing is Key," Sarah momentarily decides to stay with her abusive boyfriend because she doesn't know where else to go. "I think we have a lot here" she says, "and not all of it's bad." In story after story personal histories unfold, always what lies in wait is the possibility for connection. A brother who dies young, a first love, an abandoned husband--each persists in the realm of memory, adding texture and meaning to the lives they influence. In "The Future of Ruth" a woman comes to understand that "the proof of one's life lay in her death and the trees that might spread out and over a soul." In revolutionary Nicaragua, on a ranch in Arizona, from a Vermont Ski slope, the souls in Low Flying Aircraft soar, all hoping to catch a glimpse "of the shape of things to come, of possibility."
