Book Beekeeping for the Beginner in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beekeeping for the Beginner in California Classic Reprint written by George Haymaker Vansell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping for the Beginner in California California is less noted for honey production than for the production of bees and queens for sale to Canadians and to other western bee keepers living under severe winter conditions. The 1928 sales were 70 tons of bees and queens. Comparatively few persons are likely to become successful com mercial beekeepers, as few possess the necessary temperament, the frugality, insight, and skill required. A prospective commercial bee keeper should go very slowly until he has had considerable actual experience. The majority of farmers and many residents of small towns can, however, successfully keep a few stands of bees with little expense and time. Beekeeping in Relation to the 0rchardist. - Perhaps the most important, but not the best known, work of the honeybee is the conveyance of pollen from flower to flower, thus assisting in the fertilization of plants, and assuring their fruitfulness. Bees are so necessary for the successful pollination of many fruit trees, nut trees, and seed plants that the growing of certain horticultural products has been handicapped by the recent decline in beekeeping. Among numerous reasons for the growing difficulty of successful bee culture may be mentioned, as chief, the wide dissemination of organisms causing death to the bee larvae and thus increasing expenses, and secondly, the replacement of vast areas of native nectar-yielding plants by the expansion of cultivation. In spite of the increased difficulties, however, the keeping of a few colonies of bees is still possible for many. It must be emphasized that bees will not work free and pay their own board as many uninformed enthusiasts suppose. Bees require consistent effort to keep them in good con dition if they are not to become a. Complete nuisance and a focus of infection to other bees nearby. For the good of the industry, the smaller beekeepers should become familiar with bees, their habits, and their diseases. Bees are conservationists. They supplement their extremely im portant service of pollinizing food and forage crops, by elaborating from the nectar of the plants thus benefited one of the most delicious, nutritious, and readily digestible foods. Hive bees, in addition to gathering nectar, must collect and store pollen in order to live and to rear their young. The body of the bee is provided with various modified parts for gathering, carrying, and manipulating the pollen. The relationship between bees and plants. Is here marvelously close for bees cannot live without the plant blossom products. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honey Market News, 1964, Vol. 48 The honey market ruled generally quiet at most levels. Bulk sales continued at about a normal seasonal pace, with prices generally unchanged from the past period. Pro ducats received mostly 14-l5c per pound for bulk lots of Midwestern, good quality, white or better clover honey. Retail honey sales were considered good at some points, but this was not the general rule on the average. In fact, sales slacked off follow ing the holiday season in much of the country, but were expected to perk up shortly. Colonies in many of the cold northern sections of the country experienced at least partial cleansing flights during the first week of the new year. A short lived warm spell moved across the Nation during that week. In areas where it was still too cold for actual flights, colonies managed to at least shift clusters onto new supplies. Thus, it was felt that most bees were wintering satisfactorily with, of course, some exceptions. In southern California, some brood rearing occurred in areas where there was a small nectar flow in progress. One central Louisiana beekeeper reported that rather heavy colony losses in that part of the State. Erratic weather conditions prevailed across the country during the period. The first week found temperatures generally above normal over most of the area east of the region east of the Mississippi River Valley. Generous rains fell along the northwestern Pacific Coast. Most other areas eastward to the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers received less than a quarter of an inch. The heaviest snow fall of the century fell over parts of the Southeastern States with ten and a half inches reported at Bay St. Louis, 'mississippi. Southwesterly winds brought a warming trend into the mid-section of the country about the middle of this first week but the warm spell was short lived. A severe cold spell rapidly pushed southeastward and freezing temperatures occurred as far south as Tampa, Florida. The second week proved colder than normal in most parts. Temperatures dropped below zero over much of the northern and central areas of the country. Snowfall ranged from a few inches along the western edge of the Plains States to a foot or more in Illinois and eastward. A few snow flurries fell at Pensacola, Florida on January 13. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Productive Bee-Keeping: Modern Methods of Production and Marketing of Honey The author's earliest recollections are of days with his grandfather among the bees. One of the proudest days of his whole life was the first time he was permitted to cut a limb from an apple tree on which a swarm had clustered. With a lifetime of intimate association with the bees and a wide acquaintance among the bee-keepers of the nation, it may not be regarded as surprising that he should undertake to set down in this book the information gleaned from so many sources. In no other pursuit, perhaps, do the originators' names cling to the articles of equipment or methods of manipulation, as in bee-keeping. Most of the articles of equipment, as well as methods in common use, bear the name of the man with whom they originated - the Langstroth hive, Porter bee escape, Alexander feeder, Root smoker, Miller queen cage, and so on throughout the entire field of apiculture. So firmly established has this custom become, that a writer is in danger of being accused of plagiarism if he describes a method without the originator's name in connection. While the author has followed the usual custom, in the main, some methods have become so generally adopted that it hardly seems necessary to continue the practice. It is not with any intention of claiming as original any of these plans that the originator's name has occasionally been omitted, but rather because it does not seem needful with matters so fully credited already.
