Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists have a choice concerning what role they should play in political debates and policy formation, particularly in terms of how they present their research. This book is about understanding this choice, what considerations are important to think about when deciding, and the consequences of such choices for the individual scientist and the broader scientific enterprise. Rather than prescribing what course of action each scientist ought to take, the book aims to identify a range of options for individual scientists to consider in making their own judgments about how they would like to position themselves in relation to policy and politics. Using examples from a range of scientific controversies and thought-provoking analogies from other walks of life, The Honest Broker challenges us all - scientists, politicians and citizens - to think carefully about how best science can contribute to policy-making and a healthy democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, honest politics is an oxymoron. Yet there have been enormous changes in Canadian public life in the past two decades to identify and address expectations that politicians and officials will act honestly and in the public interest. Using high-profile political scandals as case studies, this book explores the standards of accountability to which Canadian politicians are now being held. Among the case studies addressed are the gas plant scandal in Ontario, the "Railgate" scandal in B.C., the Robocalls affair, the "sponsorship scandal", Stephen Harper's attack on the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and the saga of Rob Ford. This book critically analyzes changes introduced and implemented over the last twenty years intended to deal with ethical issues in politics, including the boom of independent ethics commissioners, the regulation of lobbyists in Canada, and federal efforts to protect whistle-blowers. Contributors to the book include experts in all these areas, drawn from across the country.

Book The Six Pillars of Honest Politics

Download or read book The Six Pillars of Honest Politics written by John Rankin and published by Tei Publishing House. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American political life is presently in a death spiral, drowning in a sea of increasingly complex laws. There is an assault against the unalienable rights of life, liberty and property, orchestrated by the top-down god-state. Can we take Occam's razor, rooted in the proactive, and cut out all the reactive elements? Can we cut out the metastasizing cancer of distrust, and restore the health of trust and simplicity throughout our common political life? Here, there are four ideas for consideration: 1.First, the six pillars of honest politics start with our unique national identity and foundation - unalienable rights given by the Creator that belong to all people equally - life, liberty, property and thus, the power to pursue happiness. Under the second unalienable right, this means that the intrinsic nature of the Gospel advances religious, political and economic liberty for all people equally. 2.Second, these pillars serve a level playing field for all ideas to be heard equally, and by definition, are pre-partisan in nature. 3.Third, these pillars serve checks and balances on power in government, according to the consent of the governed. 4.And fourth is the sharp application of Occam's razor, to "reduce needless redundancies," or to "keep it simple." Here I propose a model for a simplified state constitution and likewise for the U.S. Constitution, to cut state laws and the U.S. Code by well over 99 percent.

Book The Honest Politician s Guide to Prisons and Probation

Download or read book The Honest Politician s Guide to Prisons and Probation written by Roy D. King and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a comprehensive analysis of legislative and organisational changes and interviews with all the key players, The Honest Politician's Guide to Prisons and Probation provides an authoritative account of the crisis which has gradually engulfed the prison and probation services since 1991. Setting out the nature and extent of the crisis, King and Willmott show how the Woolf agenda was overridden in a process of political churn, through explorations of the Conservative government until 1997, New Labour from 1997 to 2010 and the Coalition and Conservative governments since 2010. Uniquely, interviews with all surviving Home Secretaries and Justice Secretaries of the period include insightful and candid reflections upon their time in office, and how they saw the future. Views from both inside and outside the prisons and probation services are also explored, based on interviews with the Director Generals of the Prison Service and of the new National Probation Service, Chief Inspectors of Prisons and Probation and the four most recent Lord Chief Justices, including Lord Woolf himself. Concluding by drawing on this collective wisdom, King and Willmott set out what is needed for an effective and sustainable future. It is essential reading not just for those in Westminster, but also for practitioners in criminal justice, advocacy organisations, thinktanks and scholars and students in Criminology, Criminal Justice, British Politics and Public Policy.

Download or read book Plunkitt of Tammany Hall written by George Plunkitt and published by . This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1843, George Washington Plunkitt was a long-time State Senator from New York. He was part of what is known as New York's Tammany Hall machine.Plunkitt became wealthy by practicing what he called "honest graft" in politics. He was a cynically honest practitioner of what today is generally known as "machine politics," frank in its exercise of power for personal gain. In one of his speeches in this book, he describes the difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together. The positive side of machine politics, as Plunkitt saw it, was the closeness between political bosses and their constituencies. He cites how Tammany bosses such as himself would assist the poor of New York in immediate and necessary ways (such as by providing emergency loans) while others, such as social reformers and the federal government, would only push for long-term improvements in the situation of the urban poor. Similarly, he argues that the machine listened to and defended the poor while others regarded them from a distanced, patronizing point of view. Thus, Plunkitt regarded the fragmented and independent format of machine governance to be the most perfect form of urban administration possible.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Muzzled scores some righteous points about the need for an honest national dialogue.”—Los Angeles Times In Muzzled, Juan Williams uses his very public firing from NPR as a launching pad to discuss the countless ways in which honest debate in America is stifled. In today’s partisan world, where media provocateurs rule the airwaves and political correctness dictates what can and cannot be said with impunity, Williams shows how the honest exchange of ideas and the search for solutions and reasonable compromise is deliberately muzzled. Among the issues denied a full-throated discussion are racial profiling, the increased reliance on religious beliefs in debating American values and legislation, the nuances of an immigration policy gone awry, the uneasy balance between individual freedom and our desire for security against terrorism, and much more. Delivering a fierce, fresh look at the critical importance of an open airing of controversial issues, Williams argues that only by bringing such hot-button topics into the light of day can we hope to grapple with them, and exercise our cherished, hard-won right of free speech.

Book Self Policing in Politics

Download or read book Self Policing in Politics written by Glenn R. Parker and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to what news reports might suggest, the majority of politicians behave ethically and are never subject to investigations. Is this because of the elaborate system of rules Congress has constructed to regulate the conduct of its members as well as the fear of electoral reprisal? Drawing on economic literature on the behavior of firms, Glenn Parker answers no. He argues that members of Congress behave ethnically not because of the fear of punishment but because of their concern for their reputations. He draws parallels between politicians and businesses, since both stand to suffer significantly when accused of wrongdoing. Just as business' poor behavior can cause brand names to be tarnished, prices to plummet, and future business to disappear, dishonest politicians stand to sacrifice the human capital invested in their careers, and premiums for honesty, such as electoral security and prestigious post-elective employment. Parker explores public attitudes toward the behavior of members of Congress and shows how those attitudes shape the way members conduct their professional lives. Written from the perspective of public choice, this book offers a novel approach to the question of how to keep politicians honest.

Book Honest Government

Download or read book Honest Government written by W J Michael Cody and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1992-09-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans deserve honest government. This text addresses the need for a comprehensive statement of ethical behavior for public officials and employees at every level of government. Recognizing the need for legal reforms that focus mainly on campaign contributions, the authors examine the broader question of how we should measure the routine, day-to-day ethics of men and women in public service. By focussing more on attitudes and practices, the authors suggest that the highest standard of both ethics and competence should be demanded of all our public servants. The book identifies situations in which officials ought to act cautiously and presents the ethical rules that should be applied to each situation. The text presents a philosophy of public service and then moves to particular situations to which this philosophy must be applied: campaign finance; the campaign itself; behavior of elected officials, appointed officials, and public employees; the role of lobbyists; compensation for public servants; moving to and from the public and private sectors; ethical guidelines for lawyers and judges; the private lives of public servants; and enforcement of ethics. The final chapter discusses the sometimes competing forces of ethics and competency. Ethical guidelines are gathered in the appendix and serve as a useful starting point for ethics in any public service setting. The combination of persuasive and thought-provoking proposals for governmental ethics reform along with practical guidelines on how to maintain the highest possible standards of ethical conduct makes this an important text for students in ethics and government courses, as well as an imperative reading for public officials, whether elected, appointed, or career.

Book Plunkitt of Tammany Hall

Download or read book Plunkitt of Tammany Hall written by William L. Riordon and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plunkitt of Tammany Hall A Series of Very Plain Talks on Very Practical Politics William L. Riordan “Nobody thinks of drawin’ the distinction between honest graft and dishonest graft.” This classic work offers the unblushing, unvarnished wit and wisdom of one of the most fascinating figures ever to play the American political game and win. George Washington Plunkitt rose from impoverished beginnings to become ward boss of the Fifteenth Assembly District in New York, a key player in the powerhouse political team of Tammany Hall, and, not incidentally, a millionaire. In a series of utterly frank talks given at his headquarters (Graziano’s bootblack stand outside the New York County Court House), he revealed to a sharp-eared and sympathetic reporter named William L. Riordan the secrets of political success as practiced and perfected by him and fellow Tammany Hall titans. The result is not only a volume that reveals more about our political system than does a shelfful of civics textbooks, but also an irresistible portrait of a man who would feel happily at home playing ball with today’s lobbyists and king makers, trading votes for political and financial favors. Doing for twentieth-century America what Machiavelli did for Renaissance Italy, and as entertaining as it is instructive, Plunkitt of Tammany Hall is essential reading for those who prefer twenty-twenty vision to rose-colored glasses in viewing how our government works and why. With an Introduction by Peter Quinn and a New Afterword
