Book Honest Money Classic Reprint

Download or read book Honest Money Classic Reprint written by Arthur I. Fonda and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honest Money IN an article in the American Journal of Politics for July, 1893, I gave a brief state ment of the conclusions I had reached in an attempt to analyze the requirements of a perfect money. The limits of a magazine article prevented a full discussion of the subject; many points were left untouched, and all quotations from the works of other writers, in support of the brief arguments given, were of necessity omitted. As the course of events since the article referred to was written has more fully con firmed the conclusions stated therein, a desire to give the subject ampler treatment, which its importance seems to demand, has led to the writing of this little work. Book The Cold Storage Baby

Download or read book The Cold Storage Baby written by Denis O'Sullivan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cold-Storage Baby: A Lawyer's Text-Book on Honest Money and Irredeemable Paper Currency The material for the book was collected during the past three years, and the Book was ready for the printer when the present Panic started. The publication has been delayed to await the Intro duction, which reviews the present panic, its causes, and the remedies proposed. The author claims no gift of prophecy when he says that, in his book, he predicted the present panic; nor does he hesitate to state that Elastic Currency, if adopted, will be followed by a bankers' carnival and a people's panic at a much shorter interval of time than that between the present panic and its great predecessor of 1893. Book Honest Dollars Classic Reprint

Download or read book Honest Dollars Classic Reprint written by Edward Alsworth Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honest Dollars Money has two functions: To be a medium of exchange and to be a standard of value in the payment of debt. Money fulfills the first function best when all its parts circulate at a parity; when its value is uniform in all parts of the country; when it can be conveniently handled in any sum; and when it can be used in international trade. The present money of the United States, composed of gold, of greenbacks, and of banknotes, silver and silver certificates, kept at a parity with gold, has all the qualities of a good medium of exchange, and nobody finds fault with it. Hut as a standard of value it shows the gravest defects; while it is "sound money" it is not honest money. An honest dollar, like an honest gallon or an honest yard-stick, is simply a Just Standard. A just measure of value you get in the same way that you get a just measure of capacity. It makes no difference how many pecks there are in a bushel - three, four or eight. If we had an eight-peck bushel prices and transactions would adjust themselves to it as they do now to the four-peck bushel. Book Money in Its Relations to Trade and Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Money in Its Relations to Trade and Industry Classic Reprint written by Francis Amasa Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money in Its Relations to Trade and Industry I have seen no reason to modify at any essential point the views of the nature and uses of money which were set forth in that work, and I have not thought it necessary to alter modes of expression merely to avoid the appearance of identity between corresponding portions of the two books. Not only the general progress of Opinion, but the course of public events during the past two years, will serve to explain the greater emphasis which is here laid upon the question of Bimetallism, and the introduction of the political aspects of the subject, from which, in the former publication, I deemed myself precluded. In dealing with the question of Inconvertible Paper Money, it has been sought to trace out the ground upon which economists may take and maintain a stand against Government issues. Doubtless it will appear to many that too much ground has been surrendered to the advocates of fiat-money; but I am satisfied that no more can be held by the friends of honest money, who are bound also to be the friends of honest argument. The claim that greenbacks are not money in the fullest sense of that term; that they cannot do all in the way of measuring values, so called, which gold or silver may do, is untenable, and it can be of no advantage to any really sound cause to seek to maintain it. Book The Money We Need

Download or read book The Money We Need written by Henry Loomis Nelson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Money We Need: A Short Primer on Money and Currency And yet the assertion that the United States grew rich during the war by making trade for the shoddy mills and the sutlers is quite as worthy of respect as many Of the arguments which are addressed to Con gress and the country by those who are in favor of the Silver dollar instead Of the gold' dollar, or Of bimetallism, which means the same thing as a Sin gle Silver standard, or Of paper dollars printed by the government in quantities to suit. Whatever is said here must not be considered as addressed person ally to all who believe that something radical ought to be done to reform our money system. A good many honest people have been deceived, and a good many intelligent people have been mystified, by the speculations of those for whose apparently studious pursuit of this subject they have respect. They have been led to believe, for example, that there is not enough gold in the world for the proper transac tion of the world's business; that gold has increased in value, become clearer, and that therefore it purchases more Of other products than it used to. There is a universal outcry about low prices, and sugges tions are made that if silver were used for money as well as gold, money would be cheaper and other products would be dearer. The idea has gained ground that money is something valuable in itself, something that men, especially bankers, pursue for its own sake, because they want to store it up. Therefore these greedy persons have devised meth ods, arts, tricks - all Of them dishonorable and tyran nical - by the practice Of which they may gather in the money-of the world and compel others who want it to pay enormously for it. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bryan, Sewall and Honest Money Will Bring Prosperity William jennings bryan, statesman and presidential candidate, was born in Salem, Marion county, Illinois, March 19, 1860, son Of Silas Lillard and Maria Jen mings Bryan. His first American ancestor came from Ire land, and settled in the tidewater section Of Virginia. It is known of this pioneer emigrant that he stood as a repre sentative citizen of the state, and that his descendants were classed among the well-to-do familiesengaged in the cultivation Of the soil. They took active interest in the politics of the commonwealth as Democrats, and represented their section in county and state affairs. As farmers, the Bryans Of Virginia were conspicuous for in dustry, frugality and hospitality. They were intensely rellglous, and as leading members of the Baptish church were looked upon as safe advisers on the social, political and moral questions Of their day. In 1752 Joseph T. Bryan left the tidewater section Of Virginia and pushed westward. He located on the side Of a moun tain, Where he found all the conditions necessary for a settler's home. From the site selected for his future dwelling, he looked down through a beautiful valley made fertile by the mountain stream that found its way to the bosom of the Rappahannock. Here he put up a log cabin after the fashion of the settlers, and fitted it for the home of his family, This house still stands as an ell to a more pretentious dwelling on the Side Of Oventop mountain, at the base of Marvey's Rock, the highest peak of the Blue Ridge mountains. About half a mile westward from the old homestead, on a narrow, rocky road, the Bryan meet ing-house, a large, rambling structure, still stands In about the same condition as When the family of the great-great. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money Legal Tender United States Various questions connected with the subject of Money and Legal Tender in the United States are receiving the earnest and careful consideration of the public. This is especially the case with respect to the question whether the full legal-tender coins shall be gold only, or both gold and silver in a relative valuation of the two metals fixed by law.
