Book Transitional Justice Judicial Accountability and the Rule of Law

Download or read book Transitional Justice Judicial Accountability and the Rule of Law written by Hakeem O. Yusuf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitional Justice, Judicial Accountability and the Rule of Law addresses the importance of judicial accountability in transitional justice processes. Despite a general consensus that the judiciary plays an important role in contemporary governance, accountability for the judicial role in formerly authoritarian societies remains largely elided and under-researched. Hakeem O. Yusuf argues that the purview of transitional justice mechanisms should, as a matter of policy, be extended to scrutiny of the judicial role in the past. Through a critical comparative approach that cuts through the transitioning experiences of post-authoritarian and post-conflict polities in Latin America, Asia, Europe and Africa, the book focuses specifically on Nigeria. It demonstrates that public accountability of the judiciary through the mechanism of a truth-seeking process is a necessary component in securing comprehensive accountability for the judicial role in the past. Transitional Justice, Judicial Accountability and the Rule of Law further shows that an across-the-board transformation of state institutions – an important aspiration of transitional processes – is virtually impossible without incorporating the third branch of government, the judiciary, into the accountability process.

Book Joe Garba s Legacy

Download or read book Joe Garba s Legacy written by Fatima Nduka-Eze and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Garbas Legacy Selected Speeches and Lectures On National Governance, Confronting Apartheid and Foreign Policy Joseph Nanven Garba came to international attention in July 1975, as a member of Supreme Military Council in Nigerias new military government. Then a Colonel, the commander of the Brigade of Guards and a distinguished career officer, fate, which some call luck, thrust upon him the role of Commissioner (Minister) for External Affairs, after initially being slotted for the Transport portfolio. A diplomatic neophyte, Garba, who characterized himself as the most undiplomatic soldier there was, would learn the finer points and also the caprices of international diplomacy on the job. He did well, serving as Nigerias foreign minister, from 1975-1978 and consequently holding key diplomatic, academic and political positions - all which offered him the unfettered pulpit to speak assertively on national and international issues within his remit. When Garba spoke, people listened; for he was eloquent, had the personality and did not dodge heady issues. He had gone from an unknown quantity, whose appointment as Foreign Minister, had elicited from the Nigerian intelligentsia the terse reaction, Garba Who? to become a skillful and renowned diplomat and an assured voice of Nigeria. The thirty-two speeches and lectures in this volume represent just a fraction of the many he delivered. They are presented in remembrance and as a befitting legacy on the tenth anniversary of his passing.

This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book evaluates the unrelenting waves of ethno-religious and political conflicts with regards to the danger posed to the emerging democratic process in Nigeria by exploring the prevalence of ethno-religious conflicts in Nigeria as an upshot of predisposed confliction of colonialism, heightened by military authoritarianism and consolidated by the contradictions entrenched in the Nigerian federalism. Book Law and Practice on Public Participation in Environmental Matters

Download or read book Law and Practice on Public Participation in Environmental Matters written by Uzuazo Etemire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public participation has become a recurring theme and a topical issue in the field of international environmental law, with many multilateral environmental instruments calling on states to guarantee effectively the concept in their laws and practices. This book focuses on public participation in environmental governance, in terms of public access to environmental information and public participation in environmental decision-making processes. Drawing on the body of international best practice principles in environmental law and taking a comparative stance, Uzuazo Etemire takes Nigeria as a key case, evaluating its procedural laws and practices in relation to public access to information and participation in decision-making in environmental matters. In working to clarify and deepen understanding of the current status of environmental public participation rights in Nigeria, the book addresses key issues in environmental governance for developing and transitional countries and the potential for public participation to improve the state of the environment and public wellbeing. This book will be of great interest to undergraduate students (as further reading) and post-graduate students, academics, researchers, relevant government agencies and departments, policy-makers and NGOs in the fields of international environmental law, environmental justice, environmental/natural resource management, development studies and international finance.
