Included are methods of calculation, numerous calculations, finite generation results, Whitehead torsion and other areas. Some 330 references are given. The book assumes familiarity with cell complexes, homology and homotopy. Graduate students and established researchers can use it for learning, for reference, and to determine the current state of knowledge.

Book Homotopy Equivalences of 3 manifolds and Deformation Theory of Kleinian Groups

Download or read book Homotopy Equivalences of 3 manifolds and Deformation Theory of Kleinian Groups written by Richard Douglas Canary and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text investigates a natural question arising in the topological theory of $3$-manifolds, and applies the results to give new information about the deformation theory of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. It is well known that some compact $3$-manifolds with boundary admit homotopy equivalences that are not homotopic to homeomorphisms. We investigate when the subgroup $\mathcal{R}(M)$ of outer automorphisms of $\pi_1(M)$ which are induced by homeomorphisms of a compact $3$-manifold $M$ has finite index in the group $\operatorname{Out}(\pi_1(M))$ of all outer automorphisms. This question is completely resolved for Haken $3$-manifolds. It is also resolved for many classes of reducible $3$-manifolds and $3$-manifolds with boundary patterns, including all pared $3$-manifolds. The components of the interior $\operatorname{GF}(\pi_1(M))$ of the space $\operatorname{AH}(\pi_1(M))$ of all (marked) hyperbolic $3$-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $M$ are enumerated by the marked homeomorphism types of manifolds homotopy equivalent to $M$, so one may apply the topological results above to study the topology of this deformation space. We show that $\operatorname{GF}(\pi_1(M))$ has finitely many components if and only if either $M$ has incompressible boundary, but no ``double trouble,'' or $M$ has compressible boundary and is ``small.'' (A hyperbolizable $3$-manifold with incompressible boundary has double trouble if and only if there is a thickened torus component of its characteristic submanifold which intersects the boundary in at least two annuli.) More generally, the deformation theory of hyperbolic structures on pared manifolds is analyzed. Some expository sections detail Johannson's formulation of the Jaco-Shalen-Johannson characteristic submanifold theory, the topology of pared $3$-manifolds, and the deformation theory of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. An epilogue discusses related open problems and recent progress in the deformation theory of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds.

They provide the researcher with an up-to-date overview of this exciting branch of mathematics.

Book Categorical Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Categorical Homotopy Theory written by Emily Riehl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-26 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops abstract homotopy theory from the categorical perspective with a particular focus on examples. Part I discusses two competing perspectives by which one typically first encounters homotopy (co)limits: either as derived functors definable when the appropriate diagram categories admit a compatible model structure, or through particular formulae that give the right notion in certain examples. Emily Riehl unifies these seemingly rival perspectives and demonstrates that model structures on diagram categories are irrelevant. Homotopy (co)limits are explained to be a special case of weighted (co)limits, a foundational topic in enriched category theory. In Part II, Riehl further examines this topic, separating categorical arguments from homotopical ones. Part III treats the most ubiquitous axiomatic framework for homotopy theory - Quillen's model categories. Here, Riehl simplifies familiar model categorical lemmas and definitions by focusing on weak factorization systems. Part IV introduces quasi-categories and homotopy coherence.

Book Diagram Cohomology and Isovariant Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Diagram Cohomology and Isovariant Homotopy Theory written by Giora Dula and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In algebraic topology, obstruction theory provides a way to study homotopy classes of continuous maps in terms of cohomology groups; a similar theory exists for certain spaces with group actions and maps that are compatible (that is, equivariant) with respect to the group actions. This work provides a corresponding setting for certain spaces with group actions and maps that are compatible in a stronger sense, called isovariant. The basic idea is to establish an equivalence between isovariant homotopy and equivariant homotopy for certain categories of diagrams. Consequences include isovariant versions of the usual Whitehead theorems for recognizing homotopy equivalences, an obstruction theory for deforming equivariant maps to isovariant maps, rational computations for the homotopy groups of certain spaces of isovariant functions, and applications to constructions and classification problems for differentiable group actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hauptvermutung is the conjecture that any two triangulations of a poly hedron are combinatorially equivalent. The conjecture was formulated at the turn of the century, and until its resolution was a central problem of topology. Initially, it was verified for low-dimensional polyhedra, and it might have been expected that furt her development of high-dimensional topology would lead to a verification in all dimensions. However, in 1961 Milnor constructed high-dimensional polyhedra with combinatorially inequivalent triangulations, disproving the Hauptvermutung in general. These polyhedra were not manifolds, leaving open the Hauptvermu tung for manifolds. The development of surgery theory led to the disproof of the high-dimensional manifold Hauptvermutung in the late 1960's. Unfortunately, the published record of the manifold Hauptvermutung has been incomplete, as was forcefully pointed out by Novikov in his lecture at the Browder 60th birthday conference held at Princeton in March 1994. This volume brings together the original 1967 papers of Casson and Sulli van, and the 1968/1972 'Princeton notes on the Hauptvermutung' of Armstrong, Rourke and Cooke, making this work physically accessible. These papers include several other results which have become part of the folklore but of which proofs have never been published. My own contribution is intended to serve as an intro duction to the Hauptvermutung, and also to give an account of some more recent developments in the area. In preparing the original papers for publication, only minimal changes of punctuation etc.

Book Equivariant Stable Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Equivariant Stable Homotopy Theory written by L. Gaunce Jr. Lewis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a foundational piece of work in stable homotopy theory and in the theory of transformation groups. It may be roughly divided into two parts. The first part deals with foundations of (equivariant) stable homotopy theory. A workable category of CW-spectra is developed. The foundations are such that an action of a compact Lie group is considered throughout, and spectra allow desuspension by arbitrary representations. But even if the reader forgets about group actions, he will find many details of the theory worked out for the first time. More subtle constructions like smash products, function spectra, change of group isomorphisms, fixed point and orbit spectra are treated. While it is impossible to survey properly the material which is covered in the book, it does boast these general features: (i) a thorough and reliable presentation of the foundations of the theory; (ii) a large number of basic results, principal applications, and fundamental techniques presented for the first time in a coherent theory, unifying numerous treatments of special cases in the literature.

Book Simplicial and Dendroidal Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Simplicial and Dendroidal Homotopy Theory written by Gijs Heuts and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-03 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book offers a self-contained introduction to the homotopy theory of simplicial and dendroidal sets and spaces. These are essential for the study of categories, operads, and algebraic structure up to coherent homotopy. The dendroidal theory combines the combinatorics of trees with the theory of Quillen model categories. Dendroidal sets are a natural generalization of simplicial sets from the point of view of operads. In this book, the simplicial approach to higher category theory is generalized to a dendroidal approach to higher operad theory. This dendroidal theory of higher operads is carefully developed in this book. The book also provides an original account of the more established simplicial approach to infinity-categories, which is developed in parallel to the dendroidal theory to emphasize the similarities and differences. Simplicial and Dendroidal Homotopy Theory is a complete introduction, carefully written with the beginning researcher in mind and ideally suited for seminars and courses. It can also be used as a standalone introduction to simplicial homotopy theory and to the theory of infinity-categories, or a standalone introduction to the theory of Quillen model categories and Bousfield localization.

Book Local and Analytic Cyclic Homology

Download or read book Local and Analytic Cyclic Homology written by Ralf Meyer and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2007 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodic cyclic homology is a homology theory for non-commutative algebras that plays a similar role in non-commutative geometry as de Rham cohomology for smooth manifolds. While it produces good results for algebras of smooth or polynomial functions, it fails for bigger algebras such as most Banach algebras or C*-algebras. Analytic and local cyclic homology are variants of periodic cyclic homology that work better for such algebras. In this book, the author develops and compares these theories, emphasizing their homological properties. This includes the excision theorem, invariance under passage to certain dense subalgebras, a Universal Coefficient Theorem that relates them to $K$-theory, and the Chern-Connes character for $K$-theory and $K$-homology. The cyclic homology theories studied in this text require a good deal of functional analysis in bornological vector spaces, which is supplied in the first chapters. The focal points here are the relationship with inductive systems and the functional calculus in non-commutative bornological algebras. Some chapters are more elementary and independent of the rest of the book and will be of interest to researchers and students working on functional analysis and its applications.
