Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homogeneous hydrogenation is one of the most thoroughly studied fields of homogeneous catalysis. The results of these studies have proved to be most important for an understanding of the underlying principles of the activation of small molecules by transition metal complexes. During the past three decades homogeneous hydrogenation has found widespread application in organic chemistry, including the production of important pharmaceuticals, especially where a sophisticated degree of selectivity is required. This volume presents a general account of the main principles and applications of homogeneous hydrogenation by transition metal complexes. Special attention is devoted to the mechanisms by which these processes occur, and the role of the recently discovered complexes of molecular hydrogen is described. Sources of hydrogen, other than H2, are also considered (transfer hydrogenation). The latest achievements in highly stereoselective hydrogenations have made possible many new applications in organic synthesis. These applications are documented by giving details of the reduction of important unsaturated substrates (alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes and ketones, nitrocompounds, etc.). Hydrogenation in biphasic and phase transfer catalyzed systems is also described. Finally, a discussion of the biochemical routes of H2 activation highlights the similarities and differences in performing hydrogenation in both natural and synthetic systems. For researchers working in the fields of homogeneous catalysis, especially in areas such as pharmaceuticals, plastics and fine chemicals.

Book excerpt: The domain of catalytic hydrogenation continues to grow fast, reflecting the wide range of chemical applications that can be enhanced by the easy use of molecular hydrogen. The advances in characterization techniques and their application have improved our understanding of the catalytic processes and mechanisms occurring in both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. The aim of this volume, although not exhaustive, is to provide a general overview of new progress of the hydrogenation reactions. This volume comprises a series of various contributions, as reviews or original articles, treating heterogeneously and homogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation reactions. It is composed of three parts: hydrogenation reactions in fine organic chemistry, hydrogenation reactions in environmental chemistry and renewable energy, and special topics in hydrogenation.

Book Selective Homogeneous Catalytic Hydrogenation

Download or read book Selective Homogeneous Catalytic Hydrogenation written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complexes of the type [Ir(cod)LL'][PF6] in which L and L' are tertiary phosphine or pyridine have been prepared from [Ir(cod)(py)2][PF6]. A reinvestigation of the structure and chemistry of [Ir(cod)(py)(PCy3)][PF6] and its precursor, together with the preparation and determination of the structures of [Ir(cod)(py){(2-MeOC6H4)3P}][PF6] and [Ir(cod)L2][PFe] (L = PAMP or (4-MeOCeH4)3P) by diffraction studies are reported. Mass spectrometric characterisation of the complexes is reported for the first time, and the products of the reactions with carbon monoxide were characterised in this way. Fragmentation patterns involving postulated cyclometallated intermediates me proposed with suggestions as to how these might be substantiated. Dynamic processes in the complexes have been studied by variable temperature N.M.R. spectroscopy. The relative activity of the four phosphine-containing complexes as catalysts for the hydrogenation of alkenes has been investigated in a kinetic study involving 1-methylcydohexene. The reaction of [Ir(cod)(py)(PCy3)][PFfl] with dihydrogen has been shown to be more complex than previously reported; in the absence of substrate, amongst other products, two different isomers of stoicheiometry [{Ir(H)2(py)(PCy3)}3(/i3-H)][PFe]2 were formed in amounts which depended on the reaction conditions. The restricted rotation of the pyridine rings in one of the isomers has been investigated by N.M.R. spectroscopy. Similar studies are also described for each of the other three complexes. A curious reaction of gaseous dihydrogen with the solid-state complexes has been noted. Esters of the two bulky prochiral acids, atropic and a-methyl cinnamic, have been synthesised from the bulky chiral alcohols, (-)- menthol and (-)-bomeol via acid chloride intermediates and have been fully characterised by standard techniques. A secondary amide, N-( 2-phenyl-propenoyl)- L-phenylalanine benzyl ester, a derivative of atropic acid, was prepared using the intermediate activated 1- hydroxybenzotriazole ester and fully characterised. The chemoselective and diastereose- lective hydrogenation of these substrates was attempted in the presence of the four iridium catalysts and a number of others, including a cationic rhodium (dppb) complex. The hydrogenation products were also fully .characterised. Catalytic cycles are proposed where appropriate.xvi.
