This report shows that older people are at risk from a number of sources, including: family members and friends; strangers; commercial organisations; or carers. When understanding and responding to crime and older people there are, therefore, three issues which need to be discussed. Download or read book A Safe and Secure Environment for Older Australians written by Marianne Pinkerton James and published by National Gallery of Australia. This book was released on 2003 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report outlines the relationship between older Australians, crime, crime prevention and fear of crime. It discusses the risks for older Australians of becoming victim to various types of crime, and finds that older people in Australia are far less likely to be victims of crime than people in other age groups. The report recommends targeting strategies both to prevent victimisation and to counter older people's fears about becoming a victim of crime, as such fearfulness can potentially limit quality of life and lead to social isolation. These strategies are best implemented at a local government level, as part of a community safety strategy, and in partnership with other key agencies and stakeholders.

Book Fatal Family Violence and the Dementias

Download or read book Fatal Family Violence and the Dementias written by Neil Websdale and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores dementia-related aggression, violence, and homicide through a detailed analysis of “gray mist killings.” The term gray mist killing refers to intimate partner homicides (IPHs) committed by spouses/partners suffering from dementia, homicides of dementia sufferers committed by their caregiving spouses/partners or other family members, and IPHs attributable to the complications of caring for a co-resident family member suffering from dementia. Killings by people with dementia raise questions about the role of biological, psychological, and sociological forces. This book therefore encourages discussions around the relative weighting of these interrelated forces, and why the criminal justice system and the courts have a hard time handling these killings. It also adds to our understanding of the social responses to people with dementia, the orchestration of services, the nature of caring, and the interaction between sufferers and those familial, community, and state actors that provide support and care. The vividly detailed case studies (from the US, UK and Australia) uniquely inform criminological debates about violence, homicide, and the social responses to these complex phenomena. They are organized around the apparent motives for the killing, such as mercy, theft, prior intimate partner violence, mental illness, and exhaustion. The social responses of families, communities, and state actors are examined and contextualized against what researchers and dementia specialists suggest are promising or best practices for intervention. Apparent triggers or circumstantial precipitants for the killings invite discussion of signals, risks, and preventive interventions. The book culminates in an attempt to make sense of gray mist killings, as well as a discussion of broader implications and significance in relation to globalization, violence against women, the rising prevalence of the dementias, declining birthrates, climate change, and sustainable economic development. Drawing from a variety of disciplines, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, gender studies, social work, law, public policy, and gerontology. It should also appeal to judges, prosecutors, lawyers, social workers, gerontologists, law enforcement, adult protective services, physicians, psychologists, and psychiatrists.

Book Homicide Gender and Responsibility

Download or read book Homicide Gender and Responsibility written by Kate Fitz-Gibbon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crime of homicide has long animated academic debate, community concern and political attention. The discussion has often centered on the perceived (in)adequacy of legal responses to homicide, questions of culpability, and divergent representations of victims and offenders. Within this, notions of gender, responsibility and justice are pivotal. This edited collection builds on existing scholarship by examining these concerns not only in the context of the ‘private’ world of domestic murder but also in the more ‘public’ world of the state, the corporation, war, and genocide. In so doing this book draws from key frameworks of criminological thought, legal analysis and empirical evidence to critically examine the relationship between homicide, gender and responsibility. Bringing together leading international criminology and legal scholars, this collection provides a unique contribution to the academic and policy engagement with what is, more often than not, an ordinary and mundane crime. Analysing the crime in a variety of different social contexts alongside an in-depth and critical analysis of the interconnections between the ordinary act of lethal violence, gender and notions of responsibility, this book will be of interest to students, scholars and policymakers working in criminology and socio-legal studies.

Book Primary Care Mental Health in Older People

Download or read book Primary Care Mental Health in Older People written by Carlos Augusto de Mendonça Lima and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-07 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical resource that will support the delivery of holistic mental health interventions in the primary and community care setting for older people. Primary care delivery is discussed in relation to both functional mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and psychotic and personality disorders, and acquired organic mental disorders of old age, such as dementia, cognitive impairments, and delirium. Careful consideration is paid to the complex relationship between mental and somatic health problems, as well as the impacts of multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Further topics include, for example, epidemiology, wider determinants of health, different care models, history taking, neurocognitive and capacity assessment, and pharmacological, psychological, and physical interventions. The wider goals of the book are to support the development of community resilience and self-care in older people; to promote universal access and equity for older people in order to enable them to achieve or recover the highest attainable standard of health, regardless of age, gender, or social position; and to promote pathways to care for older people with mental health problems respecting their autonomy, independence, human rights, and the importance of the life-course approach. This book will be an invaluable resource for all professionals who work with older adults with mental health problems and those training in these fields including physicians, psychiatrists, family doctors, geriatricians, general practitioners, nurses, psychologists, neurologists, occupational therapists, social workers, support workers and community health and social care workers.
