Book Homestead Sanctuary

Download or read book Homestead Sanctuary written by K. Beasley and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and raised on a quarter horse farm in Montana, Alex’s plan for the future was college and eventually running the family ranch. That plan changed after the attack on September 11, 2001, when Alex joined the Army in order to defend the United States of America. When a promising military career is cut short by a life-altering injury, Alex is forced to return to Montana in an attempt to heal a broken body, mind, and soul. Coaxed into providing a sanctuary for an injured horse, Alex begins to understand when you save an animal, that same animal finds a way to save you in return. As the difficulties of running an animal sanctuary unfold, so do the challenges of everyday life. Adjusting to a new way of living, Alex must find a way to deal with the past while embracing the future. In Homestead Sanctuary, Alex narrates the uplifting and often-comical adventures of the animals and people who find themselves part of the journey. In addition to the incredibly special horse named Ma Jolie, you will meet a variety of animals, including a pig named Liberty rescued from an overturned semi, a blind filly named Miracle, and a very clever pup named Tapa. As word gets out about the animal rescues and all the fun-filled activities, it is not long before the community of Kalispell takes notice. With the assistance of some amazing volunteers, Homestead Sanctuary becomes a place of healing for both the animals and the people of Montana. Realizing the complexity of the world we live in, Homestead Sanctuary is a heartwarming adventure that opens the door for conversations regarding animal abandonment and abuse, as well as human issues such as a disability, autism, suicide, and PTSD.

Book excerpt: Homestead is the first book in The Queendoms Trilogy. It is the fifth novel in The Queendoms Series that begins with The Califia Trilogy (Rebellion, The Hunt, Queen of Califia) and Second Bond. It is a time of peace in the queendoms civilization. Built on the ruins of the male-dominated civilization that collapsed four hundred years ago on the former North American land mass, the queendoms thrive by imposing female rule and principles that support the safety of women and girls and the equal sharing of resources for all. Anming Lee, Queen’s Knight and leader of the knights that protect Queen Jacintha and the Queendom of Califia, now lives in the castle with his bond mate Kellen Cassidy. While on the surface all is calm, a sense of unease moves through the three inland queendoms of Califia, Madrona and Rio. In Madrona, young Queen Lilith struggles to handle the responsibilities thrust on her upon her mother Queen Genevieve’s death, while her older brother Prince Adam, fearing the queendom lacks defenses, continues his secret training to turn the Oak Vale temple members into a deadly fighting force. On a special island in the Rio Queendom, survivors of the Seesun marsh abuses gather to heal and to form a new society without men. But on another island south of Madrona, a new danger is brewing. The former Seesun leaders have started a new settlement of men with a different goal. They call it the homestead.

Book Farm Sanctuary

Download or read book Farm Sanctuary written by Gene Baur and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-03-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading animal rights activist Gene Baur examines the real cost of the meat on our plates -- for both humans and animals alike -- in this provocative and thorough examination of the modern farm industry. Many people picture cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens as friendly creatures who live happily within the confines of a peaceful family farm, arriving as food for humans only at the end of their sun-drenched lives. That's what Gene Baur had been told -- but when he first visited a stockyard he realized that this rosy depiction couldn't be more inaccurate. Amid the stench, noise, and filth, his attention was drawn in particular to one sheep who had been cast aside for dead. But as Baur walked by, the sheep raised her head and looked right at him. She was still alive, and the one thing Baur knew for sure that day was that he had to get her to safety. Hilda, as she was later named, was nursed back to health and soon became the first resident of Farm Sanctuary -- an organization dedicated to the rescue, care, and protection of farm animals. The truth is that farm production does not depend on the family farmer with a small herd of animals but instead resembles a large, assembly-line factory. Animals raised for human consumption are confined for the entirety of their lives and often live without companionship, fresh air, or even adequate food and water.Viewed as production units rather than living beings with feelings, ten billion farm animals are exploited specifically for food in the United States every year. In Farm Sanctuary, Baur provides a thoughtprovoking investigation of the ethical questions involved in the production of beef, poultry, pork, milk, and eggs -- and what each of us can do to stop the mistreatment of farm animals and promote compassion. He details the triumphs and the disappointments of more than twenty years on the front lines of the animal protection movement. And he introduces sanctuary. us to some of the special creatures who live at Farm Sanctuary -- from Maya the cow to Marmalade the chicken -- all of whom escaped horrible circumstances to live happier, more peaceful lives. Farm Sanctuary shows how all of us have an opportunity and a responsibility to consume a kinder plate, making a better life for ourselves and animals as well. You will certainly never think of a hamburger or chicken breast the same way after reading this book.

Book The Resilient Farm and Homestead

Download or read book The Resilient Farm and Homestead written by Ben Falk and published by Chelsea Green Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resilient Farm and Homestead is a manual for developing durable, beautiful, and highly functional human habitat systems fit to handle an age of rapid transition. Ben Falk is a land designer and site developer whose permaculture-research farm has drawn national attention. The site is a terraced paradise on a hillside in Vermont that would otherwise be overlooked by conventional farmers as unworthy farmland. Falk's wide array of fruit trees, rice paddies (relatively unheard of in the Northeast), ducks, nuts, and earth-inspired buildings is a hopeful image for the future of regenerative agriculture and modern homesteading. The book covers nearly every strategy Falk and his team have been testing at the Whole Systems Research Farm over the past decade, as well as experiments from other sites Falk has designed through his off-farm consulting business. The book includes detailed information on earthworks; gravity-fed water systems; species composition; the site-design process; site management; fuelwood hedge production and processing; human health and nutrient-dense production strategies; rapid topsoil formation and remineralization; agroforestry/silvopasture/grazing; ecosystem services, especially regarding flood mitigation; fertility management; human labor and social-systems aspects; tools/equipment/appropriate technology; and much more, complete with gorgeous photography and detailed design drawings. The Resilient Farm and Homestead is more than just a book of tricks and techniques for regenerative site development, but offers actual working results in living within complex farm-ecosystems based on research from the "great thinkers" in permaculture, and presents a viable home-scale model for an intentional food-producing ecosystem in cold climates, and beyond. Inspiring to would-be homesteaders everywhere, but especially for those who find themselves with "unlikely" farming land, Falk is an inspiration in what can be done by imitating natural systems, and making the most of what we have by re-imagining what's possible. A gorgeous case study for the homestead of the future.

Download or read book Sanctuary Line written by Jane Urquhart and published by MacLehose Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice Munro hails Urquhart's "most compelling depiction of the sense of place in human lives." "Urquhart's writing is poetic, in the sense that it is beautifully compact and restrained when describing the most powerful emotions," says The Times. The author Claire Messud praises her as having "a great gift for the historical novel, for the melding of ideas, events and individuals into a significant whole." In Sanctuary Line Urquhart has created a nuanced and moving novel about family legacies, love, and betrayal. Solitary, nostalgic Liz Crane returns to her family's now-deserted farmhouse--once the setting for countless happy summers spent on the northern shore of Lake Erie--to study the migratory habits of the Monarch butterfly. Encompassing all the colorful stories and blarney of successful Irish immigrants who have made the most of their relocation to North America, the Cranes' rich family history is now circumscribed by sadness. Liz's beloved cousin Amanda, a gifted military strategist, has been killed in Afghanistan, a loss that had been foreshadowed many years in the past by the disappearance of Amanda's charismatic father. Reflecting on the fragility and transience of human life and relations--mirrored in the butterflies' restless flight patterns and transcontinental migrations--Liz finds that love is there to be found where, and when, you least expect it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relive through reminiscing and remembering, a Maine pastor's recollections of boyhood experiences that turned into a minister's messages in old age. After five decades (Barry's first message was preached in 1966), travel back in time with a lifelong Maineaic to his home place, the Blackstone homestead of Perham, Maine. What sparked these homilies was his inheritance of seven acres of the family farm, homesteaded in 1861, and the receiving of his grandparent's house built in 1924 at the death of his Uncle Paul. You will probably come to the same conclusion as this coastal Maine pastor--that his seminary training began long before he attended a Bible school in South Carolina in the early 1970s. Flash back with him to the 1950s and 1960s when spiritual lessons were everywhere on his rural potato and dairy farm. Pastor Blackstone didn't know it then, but realizes now that he was surrounded by family Bible teachers and friendly Biblical instructors that eventually would inspire this series of sermons. Homestead Homilies is a collection of scriptural observations inspired by a dog named Rover, an uncle named Read, a moonlit night, a barnyard hedge, a day plowing, a grandmother's helpful hand, a bee hive, a simple prayer, a sparrow's song, and many more simple events in a past age where homilies were being preached and now eventually heard. It is the author's prayer that these simple sermons will provoke the reader to remember long lost messages from their distant past.

Book Tourism as a Challenge

Download or read book Tourism as a Challenge written by Maria F. Schmitz and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first tourist destinations were primarily consolidated in the early twentieth century. Since then, tourism has undergone significant changes in its economic and social components. Over time, many of these destinations have now come to represent 'mass tourism' and are the subject of many studies on the impacts of tourism and competitiveness policies. The conclusions of these studies point to the need for new perspectives and strategies ranging from adaptation to new contexts to a radical change in targets. Concepts such as 'sustainability', 'nature', 'biodiversity' or 'climate change' have now been added to the tourism industry with varying degrees of knowledge and skill. These offer a great opportunity to improve a model of tourism previously oriented towards business and the institutional rhetoric of "sustainability" – a fact now recognised by tourists as representing the negative effects of conventional tourism.Management of these innovations should include among its aims environmental education and orient visitors towards awareness and respect for sustainability even outside their leisure time. To this end, the tourist needs to be made aware of all those involved and their commitment to managing the destination, as enjoying the territory should be based upon minimising the socio-ecological impacts of tourism, and on motivating nature conservation and participation of local populations in both these goals, as well as in the economic benefits obtained. The challenge entails the destination finding a good balance between economic and cultural benefits, landscape conservation and tourist satisfaction. This fifth volume of the Tourism Today Series presents a collection of papers addressing the how to manage these types of uses at a variety of destinations and in multiple contextual realities. These edited papers were selected from those presented at different international conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology. They address important issues related to tourism as a tool for development which will give a better understanding of some of the current challenges.
